walzav29
Ryan and McFadden received huge raises compared to last years draft picks. That could be trouble for us. The Bengals may go 20% higher than last years #9, but if everyone else is going 40% trouble could ensue. I hope not. It is important to get him in here on time. PhunkE1
I don't know about that. We have such a great track record of getting our #1's signed and in camp on time. Can you feel the sarcasm?

Personally, I think MB has always paid his draft picks inline with everyone else....
skyline
I read an article on bengals.com the other day that mentioned how the Bengals have had very good success in the past with Rivers' agents. Here's hoping...
DC_Bengals_Fan
It'll be tough. This year is weird because the top QB went #3 instead of #1, the #1 pick probably sub-par money to be the #1, and the #4 guy is a marquee name. Also, the two early big contracts were by two desperate/stupid teams (Falcons and Raiders). And by all accounts, this draft was significantly better at the top than last year. But teams will at least have Jake Long's contract with $30M guaranteed over only 5 years. Even if you pro-rate it, it's only on the order of 12% higher than Russell's, with less risk since it's fewer years. So it's a mixed bag, and yes, this will make the chances of holdouts greater, I'd say. If I'm the Bengals I'd want to see what happens with Dorsey and Ellis, rather than looking at eye-popping numbers that Al Davis hands out to a RB. DC_Bengals_Fan
There's word from PFT (I know, I know) that McFadden's contract isn't as good as it reads. I don't think it's an apples-to-apples 40% increase over last year. Still, I'm pretty sure the real-value increase is over 10%.
Thurmanation
40% is a ridiculous increase, at this rate in 20 years the number 1 overall pick will be paid more then the organization is worth.

sparky151
They still have to fit him into the rookie pool. Leaguewide the rookie pool only went up 5% from last year. Of course it only applies to the first year of the contract. As the #9, Rivers can sign a 6 year deal. Usually the lower picks sign first and the top pick gets what's left over. If he has to take a bit less his first year, you can bet his agent will get it back for him in later seasons.

HAPPYJAQ
Giving ANY rookie nearly 30 million in guaranteed coin as absurd. If the CBA is not fixed by '10, the NFL is going to be the same as MLB. The Jets, Giants, Cowboys Bears, Lions (believe it or not) and teams like that in contention every year with teams like the Bengals, Vikings, Packers, Bucs and Titans struggling just to make .500. If the CBA is not fixed by '10, the NFL is going to be the same as MLB.A big difference between the NFL and MLB is that MLB gives huge contracts to veterans. High draft picks dont get monster deals, its mostly signing bonuses.MLB has a rookie scale, NFL does not.

HAPPYJAQ
It's crazy to think that Rivers will likely be the highest paid defensive player (in guaranteed money) as a rookie but that's probably the cast with a lot of teams picking in the top-10 in the first round. Giving McFadden 26 mill guaranteed when he can go Ki-Jana Carter or Kenny Irons and blow his knee in pre-season is absolutely insane. It defines the problem in the NFL.
