What Packers want for Williams

Posted: Tuesday February 26, 2008 06:48AM ET

If the Packers decide to trade defensive tackle Corey Williams before the draft, they probably will be seeking a second-round selection. That was the opinion of three personnel directors for other National Football League teams attending the NFL scouting combine. An executive for an NFC North Division team said the Detroit Lions, who reportedly are trying to trade defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, probably would have jumped on Williams if Rogers had been dealt and Williams had made it to the unrestricted free-agent signing period.

Does that mean that any team who tades for him will have to pay the franchise tag salary?

I'm still interested...

Add Stroud to the list...looks like this is "Trade a DT Year." Can we put Thorton on the block?

STROUD FOR SALE

Though few quality interior defensive linemen can be had in free agency, several are available on the trade market.

Joining Shaun Rogers of the Lions, Dewayne Robertson of the Jets, and Kris Jenkins of the Panthers is Marcus Stroud of the Jaguars.

A league source has confirmed that Stroud has been given permission to shop himself in a trade. Under his contract, Stroud is due to receive salaries of $5 million, $5.5 million, and $6 million over the next three seasons.

Last year, Stroud was suspended for four games due to a violation of the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances. He also missed several games due to injury.

If Stroud is traded, the Jags presumably will go with John Henderson and Grady Jackson at defensive tackle.

The Falcons could be interested in Stroud, since former Jags defensive coordinator Mike Smith is now the head coach there.

A reader tells us that the news regarding Stroud initially was reported by our friends at 1010XL in Jacksonville.

Unless his play has fallen off more than I'm aware of Stroud would be the pick of that litter. Shaun Rogers is pretty inconsistent, Kris Jenkins has been a shadow of his former self for a couple of seasons, and the reason the Jets are a threat to snatch Sedrick Ellis is due to their desire for an upgrade at NT, where Dewayne Robertson seems out of position.

More news on the DT front...the crazy money has begun...

RAIDERS SIGN KELLY TO HUGE DEAL by Michael David Smith

Adam Schefter of NFL Network and John Clayton of ESPN are reporting that the Oakland Raiders have reached an agreement on a huge new contract with defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.

The reports indicate that it's a seven-year deal worth just over $50 million, with just over $18 million guaranteed. The deal makes Kelly the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history.

The 27-year-old Kelly has played both end and tackle for the Raiders and is expected to replace the retiring Warren Sapp as the Raiders' three-technique defensive tackle this season. Kelly was scheduled to become a free agent at midnight and was thought to be one of the league's most sought-after free agents because he has the versatility to play either end or tackle, and in either a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense.

Kelly started all 16 games for the Raiders in 2006 but missed nine games in 2007 after suffering a torn ACL. He joined the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2004.

Soooooooooooo....if Stroud signs with the Falcons, and Kelly gets the big bucks from the Raiders, does that give us more chance to land Dorsey or Ellis at #9 ???

We need KC or Miami to sign Wilfolk or Robertson !!!

How in the hell did Kelley get so much money?

Could it be....the same way Stacy Andrews did ???

As we enter the FA period, I will once again urge folks to keep something in mind:

Players aren't getting "paid" in the same sense that you or I collect a paycheck.

They are getting a share of total NFL revenues as mandated under the CBA.

This year, the "salary floor" is jut a bit among $100 million per team. In other words, NFL players must be given a total of ~$3.2 BILLION this year. Even figuring every team takes 80-odd players to camp, that still averages out to something like $1.3 million a player. And obviously a lot of those guys are fodder who make peanuts.

Just as an example the Bucs HAVE to spend $28 million to get to the salary floor. If the only possible guy they could sign was, for example, DesperateDerelict, our boy DD would be livin' large.

It's one of the realities of the modern NFL: $$$ is increasingly divorced from performance.

I just found this on GoBengals. In a follow up post it was rumored that the Browns will trade their 2nd round pick.

"Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Packers will trade defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Browns at some point after midnight.

Presumably, Williams will sign his one-year franchise tender and then sign a long-term deal, which will be traded to the Browns.

There's no word on what the Packers will get in return."

If the tradedoes go through for the second round pick, Cleveland will be without a first day pick this year.

True enough but they need a DT. It's doubtful they'd get a DT as talented in the second round. That DT would certainly not have his experience either. Not a bad move for them, imo.

Browns are apparently giving "Kelly money" to Williams...crazy $$$ keeps flowing...

WILLIAMS GETS KELLY MONEY

With the Raiders giving defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, who is recovering from a torn ACL, $18 million in guaranteed money, other defensive tackles are certain to get at least that much.

The first one to do so is Corey Williams, formerly of the Packers and now a member of the Browns.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Williams will receive $18 million in guaranteed money and $23 million over the first three years of his contract.

The Browns gave up a second-round pick to get Williams. As we explained last night, the fact that the Browns don't have a first-rounder or a second-round pick in 2008 could make them more inclined to hope for someone to sign Derek Anderson to an offer sheet, since it would give the Browns a first-rounder and a third-rounder if they choose not to match.
