jditty47
Reports: Reds agree to one-year deal with AffeldtESPN.com news servicesUpdated: January 20, 2008, 11:10 AM ETComment Email Print Jeremy Affeldt was one of the top remaining bullpen arms on the free agent market, but the Reds reportedly are going to try to plug him into their rotation. AffeldtFoxsports.com and The Cincinnati Enquirer are reporting that Affeldt has agreed to a one-year contact with the Reds. Foxsports.com is reporting that the former Colorado Rockies left-hander will receive $3 million in 2008 and will be given the chance to make Cincinnati's Opening Day rotation.Cincinnati, which has three starters penciled into their 2008 rotation in ace Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo and Matt Belisle, currently do not have a veteran left-handed option for their starting staff.Affeldt, who has made 42 starts in his major league career, made nine starts for the Royals in 2006. He pitched exclusively out of the bullpen for the Rockies in 2007.In 75 appearances for Colorado in 2007, Affeldt posted a 4-3 record with a 3.51 ERA. Left-handed hitters batted .250 against him while opposing right-handers hit just .211.Affeldt would be the third pitcher added by the Reds in the offseason, joining new closer Francisco Cordero, who signed a four-year, $46 million contract and Edinson Volquez, who was acquired from the Rangers for outfielder Josh Hamilton. Casey
I don't know a whole lot about him either, but a lefty with an ERA under 4.00 while pitching at Coors Field is kind of impressive.
ArmyBengal
Well, we needed a lefty and it's not they were going to give up the farm for Bedard... It should prove to be interesting to see how he does in Spring Training...WHODEY !!!
rwalling
In my mind this deal is all upside:WORST CASE - We added a late inning lefty with a sub 4.00 ERA last year - IN COLORADOBEST CASE - We get a solid, young lefty starter with a plus fastball, who knows how to pitch in hitters' parks.PLUS it means NO Brett Tomko and potentially much less Mike Stanton. Like I said, all upside.
agreen_112
We have only 1 lefty as a starter?
rwalling
We have only 1 lefty as a starter?Harang, Arroyo, Belisle and Bailey are all righty, as are Cueto and Volquez. The only other lefty candidates are Maloney and Livingston.
