combatbengal
It's obvious; our beloved Bengals need help on Def side of the ball.Denver Broncos defensive boss Jim Bates resigned on Tuesday after the team limped to a 7-9 record in his first year on the job.Joe Gibbs walked away from his Washington Redskins. Bobby Petrino, quit the Falcons with three games remaining to fill the Arkansas vacancy. There’s a loyal guy!Raven got rid of all their coaches.Who did I miss and who is out there for hire?Should the Bengals look at the college level for a defensive coach? I don’t think it could hurt. ShulaSteakhouse
Marvin seems to be set on NFL guys in his little network of has-beens and recycled assistants (along with most of the NFL these days). I wouldn't count any college folks.
combatbengal
I agree that LSU had a heck of a Def. The Buckeyes had a pretty good def season too. It might be a good idea to go with a college coach. Those guys are still teaching and coach the basic fundamentals of football. The Bengals defensive player looked like they forgot how to tackle this past season. If we get Thurman back and a coach that focused on the basics, we might have a decent defense. You have to be good at one or the other, right? Or what the hell are you doing? You have a good point, I want someone to drill the defenders on how to run through tackles rather than trying to take a guy down with one shoulder pop or an arm tackle. I never played "real" football and even I know you keep driving with your legs if you want to bring someone down.

combatbengal
There are a few good college coaches out there! To name a few OSU, Hawaii, GA, WVA, etc. I really like the idea of bringing one of these guys in to teach and coach our Def. Here is a question, did we have many gang tackles this year? Of course, their head coach is now at SMU.GA: Don't know anything about the DC but their defense certainly is evil. I'm all about that.WVA: See Hawaii above, substitute 'Michigan' for 'SMU'.If I had to pick a D coach, I'd want my guys drinking whatever they're serving the GA kids. fattyjay
I don't think any college coaches tranlate well directly to the NFL simply due to the handling of the players. I think it takes a couple of years as an assistant or position coach before they get comfortable with how the NFL players work. All that aside, I am a little surprised that Jim Bates' name has not come up. I live in Boulder, CO so I have a local view on how the Broncos defense played this past year (crappy). Bates did well in Miami and is a 4-3 guy and I don't feel he was the reason the Bronos defense fell apart. I think the blame mostly should be on Shanahan for his personel moves. Either way, Bates has a good track record and has not been mentioned as a candidate for any other jobs.
