We got a good defensive tackle. I don't see what Starks, Washington, or whomever adds that we can't get out of Askew. Odom might have been a good pick, but I feel we wanted a more physical end, and Odom is not a physical end. Williams adds a lot of athleticism to our secondary, and obviously our secondary needed a shot of athleticism. Remember, Winslow and Heap are both in our division and will both be #1 targets. We need players who can cover and hit, and Williams provides that. Could you imagine Kevin Kaesviharn trying to cover Kellen Winslow?

OVERVIEW

Former transfer from Towson University who established himself as one of the top safeties in the country during his two seasons at Maryland … Began his collegiate career as a strong safety, shifting to cornerback as a sophomore before finding a home at free safety with the Terrapins … Came to Maryland as a walk-on, but was granted a scholarship by the end of spring 2001 … A physical, athletic force who has great versatility, Madieu is big enough to excel in run support, yet fast and quick enough to man a corner position if the defense is in a nickel or dime package … One of the hardest-working players on the team, he also earned Iron Terp honors (given for standout performances in the team's offseason conditioning program) … In 27 games at Maryland, he totaled 166 tackles (121 solos) with a 4-yard sack, two stops behind the line of scrimmage, two quarterback pressures, a pair of fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles, seven interceptions and 12 pass breakups … For his collegiate career, he registered 261 tackles (190 solos), four stops for losses of 16 yards, eight interceptions, 29 pass deflections and six forced fumbles in 49 contests.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a lean, angular body with good muscle tone and a frame with the potential to add at least another 10 pounds with no loss in quickness … Can break down and diagnose plays quickly … Has the hip flexibility, quickness, foot speed and burst to close on the receiver when operating in man coverage … Shows adequate hip swerve to transition easily … Plays alert in zone coverage, seeing the entire picture as plays develop in front of him … Does a nice job of getting up for the high pass and anticipating the quarterback's moves … Plays with good effort (getting to the ball is very important to him) … Has the vertical-jump ability to reach for the ball at its high point … Very active in run support, getting downhill quickly while generating power behind his hits on ball carriers … Explosive tackler who hits with leverage and will pop the opponent upon contact … Gets on the move immediately to cover his assignment once he diagnoses the play … Has the short burst needed to close on the ball in flight.

Negatives: Has developing muscles, but needs to add bulk in order to absorb punishment at the next level … More quick than fast, lacking the explosive acceleration to be effective covering on long routes … Gets a little high in his backpedal, but compensates with quick feet and smooth hip snap … Will get an interception, but lacks natural hands, letting the ball absorb into his body rather than reach and pluck … Has good short-area range, but does not have a true burst to close from long distances.

AGILITY TESTS

4.5 in the 40-yard dash (indoor track) … 4.6 in the 40-yard dash (outdoors) … 345-pound bench press … 560-pound squat … 36½-inch vertical jump … 31¼-inch arm length … 9-inch hands.
