BengalszoneBilly
Wow...that was a quick little sponsorship Nextel enjoyed. Nothing close to the length of time Winston held the honor though!Report: NASCAR to be renamed Sprint Cup June 21, 2007BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT (TICKER) -- NASCAR apparently will have new wireless carrier next year. Citing multiple high-ranking industry sources, ESPN.com reported Thursday that Sprint will replace Nextel as the title sponsor of NASCAR's premiere series beginning in 2008. NASCAR declined comment when reached by PA SportsTicker. If the change takes place it would mark the third name since 2003 for the NASCAR's Cup Series. Sprint and Nextel agreed to a $36 million merger in December 2004. The Cup Series was sponsored by R.J. Reynolds through its tobacco giant Winston cigarette brand from 1972-2003. Nextel assumed the naming rights to the series in 2004.
bengalboomer7
Sprint bought out Nextel a couple of years ago, hence why it's being changed to Sprint
