BengalszoneBilly
Well seeing how I correctly picked a veteran in last weeks race at Martinsville, I'm gonna stay with that line of thought and pick one of these to old schoolers for this race:Micheal Waltrip in the Aarons Chevy. It tough to bet against D.E.I. at a restrictor plate race........................................................ or ................................................................Mark Martin in the Viagra Ford. He's getting about as hungry as Rusty was, and his team is improving by the week! It's gonna be tough flippin' between the NFL draft and this race come Sunday! kevnz
I'll agree with you about Waltrip, don't know how Dale Jr is gonna go with a new car cause he left his Daytona ride in Daytona. My second pick will be....wait for it....Elliot Sadler....I'd say DJ, but I think Sadlers team is just a touch better on the plates at the moment and I expect the Roush and Yates cars to be pretty damn stout... Kirkendall
How many restrictor plate races are there?
BengalszoneBilly
Any race held at Daytona or Talladega will be a restrictor plate race. If they let the cars run flat out there, they'd go over 220 mph easy!! Kinda lethal speed if something happens, and believe me Josh...something ALWAYS happens! Kirkendall
Have they always been restictor? The restrictor limits the air intake, right?
kevnz
Have they always been restictor? The restrictor limits the air intake, right? Restrictor plates were added in 1989(I think, maybe 88) after Bill Elliot pegged 212 at Daytona. It's a plate that goes on to restrict the air flow to the fuel mixture...It's hellish on an engine. They ran a restrictor plate race at New Hampshire cause the track got resurfaced and started killing people (Kyle Petty(yeah, those Petty's) and then Kenny Irwin) instead of NASCAR telling New Hampshire to screw themselves, they put the plates on and had the most boring race of all time....There has also been talk of putting plates on at Atlanta, but it seems to have died down now.Nobody is really sure how fast the cars would go now (I'm thinking about 230) cause in the late 80's those things were boxes...It would be scarey fast Of course Dale Earnhardt hated them and wanted them taken off and race anyway....Maybe he was onto something? No you're right kevnz, it was '89. Elliott set the track speed record there in '88.And I too wish Nascar would let the cars run wide open...at least at Talladega!! 230 mph from a 3600 lb car would be something to see!! kevnz
And I too wish Nascar would let the cars run wide open...at least at Talladega!! 230 mph from a 3600 lb car would be something to see!! The biggest problem of running wide open would be at 230, a big wreck could very well send one of those cars into the stands....That's not how NASCAR wants to make headlines.I'm for taking the plates off too, but do it with a slightly smaller engine say 308 instead of 358 cubic inches, but not just at the restrictor plates everywhere, a little less horse power would mean better racing. Kirkendall
I'm sure the drivers would know when to coast into turns and such. The problem probably would be rookies or end of the season races when points are most important..How's that for some in depth NASCAR commentary... woo hooo! BengalszoneBilly
I think eventually the Nextel Cup cars will HAVE to go to V-6's. I mean how many V-8 Taurus's, Monte Carlo's, and Intrepids are actually built? None. The biggest engine offered for any of these cars is a simply a V-6.The Busch series raced V-6's a few years ago, and offered the teams a weight advantage to do so. Why they stopped, I don't know. Now with Toyota in the truck series, I anticipate soon that they'll enter at least one of the other series, and they'll probably be bringin' a V-6 with them, maybe a V-8. If this was actual "stock" car racing, then race what engines you actually put in those production cars Then I could see Ford then stepping up with a limited edition V-8 Mustang (i.e. Cobra) that with a slightly streached wheelbase could DOMINATE the cup series!! Why? There's NO substitute for cubic inches!
BengalszoneBilly
Well my two picks (Waltrip and Martin) qualified 2nd & 6th. I think I'm gonna have the winner two weeks in a row!!

Those V8 parts are every where....You can go to your local ford dealership and order you some engine parts and build you an engine. If they went to a smaller engine it would still be a V8, in fact Robert Yates (he knows a thing or two about engines ) Has tried lobbying NASCAR to go to smaller engines with new technology, but Chevy screams bloody murder cause they know they can't compete....I think NASCAR will, cause they want other auto companies in the Nextel (damn that fells wierd) Cup and Toyato and Honda (and possibly some european company that wants to make big inroads into the states) would have an easier time playing catch up instead of having to rip off existing teams like Dodge ripped off the taurus....And speaking of the Taurus, I think at one point they did have a V8 in them....Also, speaking of Ford, there was talk at one point of using the Mustang in NASCAR.... Gotta love it Actually, both GM and Fordneed to bring up their V8's from Australia and New Zealand. Still rear wheeled and still V8's....They have a racing series here that the stock cars are still stock....

kevnz
Good race, but I don't like the decision to finish under Yellow. I hate finishing a race under yellow....I love how they do it in the Truck series. Go green, white flag next lap, then finish...two lap shootouts....Now that has gotta beat finishing under yellow....the other option would be to not count caution laps in the last ten laps.....The race wouldn't run over but maybe a few minutes and you get a green flag finish. BengalszoneBilly
I'm getting tired of resrictor plate races. They all look the same, everybody chasing the DEI drivers! I'm glad Gordon won!
WHO DEY AGAIN?
Shame on you Billy! I knew you were a hater. I'll forever think of you as a RAINBOW warrior! At least the rest of the losers are making inroads. Jr. rules and BTW the end of the race was total BS! My wife watched her first race and now she will never watch again. Damn, that's mean....You're a cruel man What was BS? The fans throwing rubbish on the track? Yep...NASCAR saying Jr hadn't passed Gordon? Nope....I don't like not racing back to caution, but I think it's a smart thing in not allowing it....I don't think they should freeze the field, I'm gonna say be a hard ass and use the last lap scoring as the field (that would piss some people off) But not allow a race to end under yellow either....Except at 'Dega and Daytona cause a 2 lap shootout at those two races could get someone killed

Hey WhoDey, I'm no fan of Gordon either.Don't you get suspicious that Juniors car is the only one that can pop out of the draft and pass ALONE? Not even his team mate Micheal Waltrip can do that! Something smells fishy to me!
WHO DEY AGAIN?
It does make you wonder but Waltrips had his moments too. I think its who makes the best adjustments that day. That is between the DEI drivers.Jr.'s old man spent a great deal of time developing the current plate DEI uses. The rest are playing catch up. I disagree with any race finishing under caution. Makes you wish you had the day back. As a matter of fact I'm spending the rest of the Spring and Summer outside and piss on Nascar.Sorry about the Gordon comment. I was just ruffling your feathers. WHO DEY AGAIN?
Then why bother racing at a track were someone could be killed. They could be killed at any track at any time. Plus they had plenty of time to clear the track. Hell,I could have mowed my front lawn and part of the back with as much time as it took to go thru that BS caution. They could have started it with 3 laps but Gordo hadn't won in a while. I wouldn't have littered the track but I would ask for a refund. What a stupid way to win. What a stupid rule. What a waste of a weekend day.
kevnz
You're just pissed it didn't go Jr's way...If it had you'd be over the moon. Racing has an inherant risk, but there is no need for the sanctioning body to further that risk along....Besides, the fans starting throwing rubish on the track and NASCAR ain't gonna go green with debris on the track....Damn, NASCAR makes decisions to help Junior, but they had no choice cause of the idiot redneck Alambama fans....
