We had a .500 team last year w/ a team that was put together throughout the year. Brandon Phillips is a excellent fielding 2nd baseman and Gonzo is a superb defender, making our team strong up the middle. Give this core of players some time to get some chemistry and you'll be suprised what will turn out. Everybody is dogging on Gonzo but he is a lot better player than felipe Lopez, he starts everywhere he goes. His career average is horrible but he is hitting a lot better of late. Ozzie Smith was a horrible hitter until he hit 30 years of age. Gonzo is a top 5 fielding shortstop and he will hit between .260 and .280 (I have faith in his hitting). Our weaknesses are Adam Dunn(fielding and quality at bats), 1 starter, and a closer. I have a lot of faith in this team. This is our best team in the last 6 or 7 years. Our best pitching staff since the early 90's.

We'll see what happens in the dog days. Luckily we're in a division where it's entirely possible to win it. I agree that much. It's just the late summer months that dooms this team. If we can overcome that, we'll be in a position to battle for the division. We almost did it last season, but... flop.

God I miss Austin Kearns.

Ditto.

I wish we'd have given Dunn to Washington instead, but they probably wouldn't have been that stupid anyways. I liked Felipe Lopez a lot as well, especially at the plate. He seemed to have a high ceiling as a defender too. I didn't like that trade at all.

I agree with kentjett though... The Reds are in as good a position to contend as they have been in a while. They'll have to avoid crapping out in August though, and I can't find any confidence in that possibility.

We are looking for a closer aren't we still. I know we re-signed Guardaro, but he won't be back until July. Any good closers left?

It'll likely be between David Weathers and Todd Coffey... and there's a lot of optimism with Coffey.

The Reds are one of the teams looking at giving Dustin Hermenson another chance.
