Miami, 1989

What a great reminder of how badly Boomer Esiason sucked that day.

I think there was something wrong with him. He didn't throw too often against the Bills and he wasn't the same in 1989. There were rumors about his shoulder. I don't think that stuff was ever substantiated but he never seemed the same after that game even though he had moderate success after he left here. His completion percentage and QB rating were both under 50% for the three playoff games.

As far as the playcalling, I think they should have continued to run Ickey Woods. I watched the game tape for the first time a few years ago and didn't realize how effective he was that day. He was having a good game and I think he ended up with close to 90 yards but I don't know how many touches he had in the fourth quarter.

And I still want to know why nobody went with Stanley Wilson when he wanted to go back to his room to retrieve his playbook. :crack:

I've never understood why so many people play endless games asking what impact a role player might have had if he had played without first asking what might have been if the Bengals starting QB hadn't played horribly. Granted, Boomer was a very popular fair haired QB who was rarely criticized, but....

Hey, this conversation is starting to sound familiar.

Yeah, there is something about 6 foot 4 quarterbacks with rocket laser arms that'll do that to a person.

A difference in one or two plays with the guys that did play and it is a totally different outcome.

Let's not turn this into another bash Carson thread. Consider what Carson went through this year. He went through his rehab ridiculously fast, had the privilege of playing behind a patchwork line, and was still above a 90 passer rating. Really, that's what we're going to bitch about? You need something to bitch about, look at the defense. I give you the following starters: Thornton, Robinson, Adams, James, O'Neal, Miller, Simmons, L. Johnson, Ohalete...okay, joking about the last one, still having flashbacks. Oh, I almost forgot, our DC is straight out of those Geico commercials.

I could show you 25 teams that would trade their QB for Palmer in about 15 seconds, and one of them is playing in the Super Bowl.

Last itime I checked all we needed was one stop from our D with less than a minute to go to have won...

Yeah, gee, that does sound familiar, eh?

I have no desire to bash Carson Palmer in earnest. But you've got to admit it's a little strange how quickly Bengal apologists are to inflate the importance of a blocking back who wouldn't have played more than 15-20 snaps under any circumstance while practically ignoring the wretched play of Boomer Esiason, their starting QB.

Hey, I once liked Boomer as much as the next guy, but I can admit that in the biggest game of his career he was awful...and the Bengals suffered as a result. Then again, it may comfort the reader to think that only one team took their eyes off the prize because of a nearby riot or because their blocking back had selfishly passed out in the bathroom.

Only if you admit that after you watched the struggles of the Bengals defense you quickly concluded that the best solution to the problem centered around drafting a new TE.
