Mike tomlin the next steelers headcoach?

Dammit I wanted them to make grimm the next one.

TOMLIN TO TAKE GRIMM'S GIG?

At a time when pretty much everyone in the league and the media believe that the Steelers will promote offensive line coach Russ Grimm to the position vacated by Coach Chin, don't rule out Vikings defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin.

Though some in the organization also believe that Grimm will be the guy, the reality is that the decision will be made, in the end, by Steelers chairman Dan Rooney and team president Art Rooney II, who are being very tight-lipped (we're told) about their plans.

Tomlin is regarded by the organization as a great candidate, but his lack of experience is a concern. Due to the Buccaneers' standard refusal to allow assistant coaches under contract to leave for bigger jobs other than head coach, Tomlin was stuck in Tampa until his deal expired, and he has worked as a defensive coordinator for only one year.

The Steelers conducted a second interview of Tomlin on Tuesday, meeting with him before several hours before taking him to a Penguins game at Mellon Arena.

And unless Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was merely looking for filler for his Wednesday item, the fact that he spent a full article getting the locals ready for the changes that would come if Tomlin gets the job could be a strong hint that Grimm might not be the guy who gets the gig.

We've said it before and we'll say it again -- we'd hire Tomlin. In a heartbeat. He instantly energized a Vikings defense that had played soft and loose and weak for most of a decade. Sure, he's young; so were Bill Cowher and Chuck Noll.

And there's something to be said for learning on the job. Tomlin will improve, and the team that is employing him when he peaks will be a team that is annually in the conversation for the playoffs and the Super Bowl.

Yep, I agree. As the Steeler anti-fan, I would really love to see Grimm get this. Contrary to reports, I don't think it will come down that way. I think the job is Tomlin's. No guarantee with him either, but he surely is the better choice over Grimm. The only good part to a Tomlin hiring is that it MIGHT spell the end of the LeBeau side of things ... and maybe there is some great pipe dream of him returning to Cincy. Probably a bit much to ask. :-)

In any case ... the more changes the better in Pissburgh.

If we diden't have Marvin 2 people I would like have HC would be tomlin or norm chow.

Kazkal frequents our board a good bit. I predicted two weeks ago that Tomlin would be the next HC when everyone thougt Whiz was a shoe-in.

Hehehe ya I saw that you bumped the thread...for me it's just grimm really doesn't make sense...if he can't coach nothing but day 1 picks how can he coach a entire team?

Well, this is surely not to say that Whisenhunt was not the Steelers choice. A very real possibility here is that he got to the point where he was being offered something from the Cardinals and could not 'afford' to risk the Steelers not taking him, and then another job opportunity had gone by (like Atlanta). Add to that that the Cards were obviously willing to pay him 2.5 million per year. I highly doubt the Steelers will give their new coach that much ... I'm betting more like a 5 year agreement at 1.75 per ... or something close to that. I just doubt they will go over the 2 million per year mark. Anyway, I suspect it was more of a timing and dollar thing as to Whisenhunt moving on, and not necessarily that the Steelers wanted Tomlin more. Of course, they will sell it to the public in a completely different manner.

How much did we pay marvin his first year?

I honestly do not recall exactly, but if memory serves me, I think it was less than 1.5 million annually. I think he was getting around 900k per year in Washington, and I recall the half million per year bump. Not sure though. I just don't see the Steelers willing to pay above the 2 million per year mark for a new guy. I am not saying they should or shouldn't ... just that they won't.

Well, everyone has been interpreting Tomlin's long interview to mean he's going to get the job, but Grimm's today was even longer. The rumor I've heard the most is that we're going to hire Rivera, and that's why we're taking so long. Of course, if the Bears win this Sunday, I doubt we'll wait until after the Super Bowl.

I still think Grimm is the best choice and will get the job. (Well, I prefered Whiz, but now that he's gone Grimm is the best choice)

Wow, someone who thinks Grimm is the best choice. That's very rare both inside and outside of Pissburgh. Well, actually, I too think he is the best choice ... but for a completely different reason.

What's not to like about Grimm? The players love him, he has a similar (if somewhat less gregarious) style as Cowher, believes in the same offensive and defensive philosophies, he's from Pittsburgh, and if he stays LeBeau and most of the rest of the staff stays.

Tomlin or Rivera would bring totally different defensive styles than what we're built for, although Tomlin says he's willing to work with what the players are good at.

Why change when what you've got has given you a 15-1 season and a Super Bowl in the last 3 years? Or the best winning % in the NFL over the last 15?

I agree. Why change? I want Grimm to lead this club as much as any Steeler fan. I really, honestly do. I sense a few years of 'fun' for me here in Pissburgh.
