Stripes
i cant believe there are football fans that do not understand what the word caliber means in a sports sense. sheesh. The phrase "in a sports sense" would suggest that such an interpretation is at the disgression of the individual, yes? I say no, you say yes. Fair enough, cool beans, et cetera. In the same way that good and bad is based off a point of view? Not sure what you mean... In a right/wrong sense, I'd agree. If you mean good and bad as in Chad Johnson is a "good" receiver, while Kevin Hardy is a "bad" linebacker, then not so much.

Spor_tees
Wait I thought he was talking about the caliber of gun the guy in The Last Boyscout used to shoot people as he ran down the field to score a touchdown...

Well, I was more referring to Senator Palpatine's main argument for Anakin to turn against the Jedi. Something Kimo tried on Palmer, but Carson is strong in the force. derekshank
This thread is rapidly getting out of control... but caliber means nothing in the NFL. Everyone thought the Panthers wera Super Bowl caliber team. They certainly had the talent... but were a bad team. The Same goes for the Giants. One of the most talented football teams in the NFL... certainly more talent than teams like the Saints and Seahawks... but they don't get it done. The Bengals fall into this category. They have an absolute ton of talent. No one here is arguing that point. Some of the best individual talent in the NFL on offense, and a ton of young guys on D with some good veteran leadership. On paper it looks like a Super Bowl team. And even a few times throughout the year, we saw glimpses of that potential. But in the end, we fell short. We were not one of the best 12 "Teams" in the NFL.Were we playoff "caliber"? That's a point that 32 teams in the NFL can try to argue... but at the end of the day, it doesn't count for much. This year I'd say we are one of the top 5 most talented teams, but not of the top top 15 teams when it came to actual on the field production. Therefore... we underachieved so much when our playoff lives was completely under our own control. How can a team claim to be "playoff caliber" when they lose 3 straight at the end of the year... any one of which would have gotten us in? Kirkendall
How can a team claim to be "playoff caliber" when they lose 3 straight at the end of the year... any one of which would have gotten us in?You're right, debating the meaning of playoff caliber is pretty dumb -- to us. The phrase is only meant for average fans to distinguish between good and bad teams. It's not a detailed analysis of a team's talent, system, etc.. it's so that Susie Q can understand, "like, they, are, a, good, team." For folks like us, we want tape, video review, interviews, explanations, instant analysis, numbers... all of which doesn't come with a "playoff caliber" association. It's just for those puny others an easy way to determine between good and bad. But I thought we'd be smart enough sports fans to just let that go. redsbengalsbucks
Tampa Bay is in the NFC and our game with them didn't go so well....Either did the one with the Falcons....And those are two teams that didn't even make the playoffs....It all evens out....Cant use the TB game to represent anything other than bad officiating. Justin Smith put that game in the win colunm for the Bengals with a completely legal, late sack that was called roughing the passer. The Bucs than procedded to score the winning TD on the very same drive. At 9-7 the Bengals would have gone to the playoffs and got thier butts handed to them the first game. They were not worthy of a playoff berth this season.
