Opinions on Brad and Dave

Since I live in Japan, I cannot watch the games with my below average internet service and must listen to the NFL Network`s local radio broadcasts.

Brad Johansen and Dave Lapham... any thoughts? any opinions?

Personally, I think Dave is pretty solid color commentator... but if Brad is supposed to be the play by play man, he is very lacking. Half the time, I have no idea what formation the Bengals are in, or the defense the other team is in... also, I don`t even know what kind of play it was, for example:

Was it a well-drawn play? Was it executed? Was it a drop pass? Bad throw? Who did what exactly?

Also, Brad has this bad habit of excitedly reporting the great plays of the opposing teams offense. I hate that. He gets just as excited for that as the Bengals plays... very aggravating for the listener. I keep thinking the Bengals defense did something good!!!

Many times, during this excited behavior... Brad forgets or fails to tell me anything about the play.

I just wonder what do you all think. Maybe we should have a 3rd man in the booth, or switch up Johansen. He is great on TV News but... not so for the radio.

I think you'd find most other radio play by play guys have the same habits (good and bad) Johansen has. He's an excitable guy, and it shows he cares plenty about what happens during a Bengals game. I have no issues with him. Dave does a great job as well, though sometimes he can annoy me with his Eeyore-like down in the dumps attitude when the Bengals screw up.

I listened to Pissburgh`s guys and the play by play guy blows Brad out of the water. But really, why does Brad have to make it seem like the Bengals defense is making a great play when REALLY it is the opposite.

I hate that stuff man....

Many times I hear,

BRAD: "Oh! And its a deep pass, and Oh!! -pause- WOW!! Its -long pause- Caught!!! Caught for a 30 yard gain on 3rd and 11 by the Chargers for 1st and Goal!"

DAVE: (simultaneously) " C`mon Justin... C`mon..... oooooh.....

AND THEN

DAVE: "Yeah.... that`s a blown coverage there.... and a missed tackle or two.... somebody was wrong."

I HATE WHEN BRAD JOHANSEN DOES THAT s***!!!!

I think they are both really good. I love to listen to them and would turn the radio up and the TV sound down if they were sychronized. TV is usually delayed by several seconds.

I feel the same way when Dan DierDORF or Randy Cross are in the booth, they almost make Madden look like a decent analyst.

Same here. I'll actually still listen to them if the synch is a little off. Lapham is the best football color analyst I've heard and the fact that he's an obvious homer doesn't change that. His comments are much more informative than your typical Madden: "See, Johnson is saying, 'hey, I gotta hit that gap, I gotta hit that gap right there, gotta get to that gap," and Anderson is saying...." He's horrible.

But you guys are listening to Brad and Dave and WATCHING the game on TV at the same time.... that is totally different. You can see the action. Of course, it is better sometimes to listen to the homer radio station while viewing than Randy Cross, Madden, or etc.

From a pure Radio-only broadcast standpoint, I think we could find a much better play by play man. Another guy I like a lot is the Atlanta Falcons play by play. The NY Giants guy is good as well.

They're hired by Mike Brown .. they come cheap.....

Yeah, maybe Johansen has too much on his plate. Sports segment on the news, Bengals weekly, press conference coverage, and play-by-play for radio. I mean, he is making money somewhere, but probably not for his radio coverage.

He is still doing local news coverage, right?

When I have to use the radio, that's the only thing I use. The radio and television broadcasts aren't even in sync, that would drive me nuts. I really don't think either Brad or Dave does a bad job... I usually feel like I know what is happening in the game.

I'm chiming in a bit late here. Sorry for that.

However, the Bengals offense runs a LOT of hurry up/no huddle. There's just not enough time to give you a detailed description of the formations, the motions, etc.. with that said, they do try when they can.

When Brad and Dave get excited, I get excited. Fine by me. You have to enjoy the excitement -- it's an exciting game. I couldn't give two rats (how do you give rats? do people accept that?!) asses (worse!!) about other team's play-by-play.

He is still doing local news coverage, right?

Been doing it for years. This year was no different.

Come on. Be honest. When Brad goes RUUUUDIIIIIIIIIIIIII after a touchdown, doesn't that get your fist pumping?

I love Dave. Everytime there's a pass deep, you hear Dave in the background saying something -- albeit incoherently -- excitedly. Reminds me of Joe Nuxhall, y'know?

Ok an honest opinion about them instead of "they come cheap" which in reality probably come no cheaper than any other announcing tandem for their home team..

Brad and Dave have an infecteous enthusiasm that I like listening to.

Homers? maybe but Ive heard Dave hit on a player when he screws up ..

Ive heard Brad do the same i.e. Chris Henry and his alligator arms.

Are they the best ?? Dont know but Ive heard some real dogs in sports announcing and we certainly could have done allot worse ...

I hope they stay with the team for years to come.

Those old "Nuxhall in the backgrounds" were soooooo awesome....A piece of my early life I will never forget!

When I lived in Cincy sometimes I would listen to Brad and Dave while watching the tv. They got to be pretty annoying to me and actually pretty homerish. I can't remember what was exactly annoying or if it was the delay between radio and tv. Or maybe I was just bored with the network commentators since no-one ever seemed to be riding the jock of the Bengals. One extreme to the other I guess.

I constantly hear Brad describe the offensive formation, "Off-set I, Chad and TJ wide right, Chris Henry wide left, TJ comes in motion..." As for the defense, I think it would be kind've difficult to describe that on the radio without being too wordy, and by the time you figure out what they're playing, the offensive play in unfolding.
