oldschooler
Two videos from Channel 12`s Brad Johansen yesterday...He says "Pollack is going to have a 4 hour surgery tomorrow (today) to add a metalplate in hopes of keeping his football career alive. Pollack welcomes this surgery.Says that he`ll know exactly what`s wrong. And the risks that he will face."Pollacks says in this video "Initially, we were talking about surgery, and now we`re talking about surgery. But it`s just a matter of what kind of surgery. There`s goodsurgery, and there`s bad surgery. And I don`t think this is a bad surgery."There`s a chance I can still play. Those quotes come from the video titled "Bengals Nation Update Jan 2: Changes Ahead For 2007"He says in this video that "David Pollack still wants to believe that he can be a partof the Bengals football plan next year." He also says that Pollack told him today (yesterday)"that Surgeons will go through the front of his neck, past his vocal cords, to correct the problemsand keep his hope alive."Pollack says in this video that "It`ll be just one of those things where I`ll be working my way back, there might be set backs, there might not be. It`s just a matter if everything goes like it should. The good thing is having surgery, they`ll have to go in there and look at everything. So if somethingis damaged even worse than we thought, we`ll know. Which is a positive thing to me. The best thingI could of heard was having surgery. Because I know exactly what`s going on inside me. And haveno doubt about it. There`s no guessing, there`s no if ands. You know exactly cut and dry. They getto see it. If something worse is wrong, then I want to know before I ever think about stepping backon a football field."Those quotes come from the video titled "Marvin Lewis Looks Ahead To New Team".Link to watch the videos...http://www.local12.com/mediacenter/local.a...amp;navCatId=41Pollack undergoes surgery Bengals linebacker David Pollack underwent surgery earlier today to address a fracture of the C6 vertebra and related damage.Spine specialist Dr. Anthony Guanciale, who performed the procedure, said it went without complications, and that Pollack is resting comfortably. Pollack’s hospital stay is not expected to last more than a few days, the Bengals said in a release.Pollack’s progress will be monitored closely by Dr. Guanciale in coming months. No forecast of Pollack’s eventual return to football will be made at this time. The surgery was performed to repair damage that occurred when Pollack made a hit on Cleveland running back Reuben Droughns in the Week 2 game Sept. 17. Pollack suffered no paralysis from the injury. He was quickly able to resume normal activities outside of football, though he has continued to wear a neck immobilization device. He is on the Bengals’ injured reserve list.Pollack attended the game Sunday against pissburgh and talked on the field before the game with Stealers wide receiver Wines Hard, like Pollack, a former University of Georgia player.http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/bengals/
HairOnFire
I still say the odds are against Pollack returning to football, but I'm encouraged that he wants to try. Now here's a question I have for the fake doctors of cyberspace. If the surgery is successful and the rehab goes well....why does nearly everyone assume that Pollack won't be ready to return until 2008? It seems to me that the things that have to happen on a strictly medical basis aren't complicated and shouldn't take very long before the outcome...and Pollack's future...can be determined. To quote Elvis, isn't this a case of now or never?

MacD BengalFan
All that I would ask for is a speedy recovery and that he makes the right decision based on the facts and not his heart. If it takes him until 2008, then so be it. His health and well being is more important then playing a game.

They will be extra cautious because coming back from this too early isn't career-threatening - it's life-threatening. From what I've heard, the bone didn't heal as well as hoped (thus the surgery). Vertebrae don't heal as neat-and clean as a leg, unfortunately.

To quote Elvis, isn't this a case of now or never?Well, it may have something to do with the fact that when asked if he'd be back, Pollack said "hopefully next year," per "Bloggin' With Brad" on da site. I dunno if he meant next season or '08.Also per Johansen, Pollack will now be in a neck brace for 8 weeks, and if all goes well will finally begin rehabbing after that. So that puts the start of his rehab in early March. Estimates last year were that said rehab, once he got the halo off and if there were no surgeries needed, would take 6 to 9 months. So now that's been pushed back from mid-December to early March.So...assuming he does not call it a career...that would suggest Pollack is unlikely to be cleared to practice or play until early September at the earliest, and early December if it takes the full 9 months. Sounds to me like the most likely scenario right now is that he misses the offseason program, camp, and the preseason, and starts the year off on the PUP list. I hadn't heard that the rehab could take as long as 9 months, and I'm not sure why it should, but your explanation sounds more than reasonable. You're my favorite fake doctor. cincy9275
i wish him well, hope he can live his life to the fullest with out any set backs. as for football i think it's over for him. i don't think he will get any doctor to tell him that there is not a increased chance he would break it again. pollack has said if there is 5 percent higher risk he was done. he has hopefully his heath a college education and a couple of million dollars a nice wife. so his future is bright with out football if he can't play he could try coaching he would probably excel at it. Chucktkd
If he deos play I wonder if the league will make him sign a release form like they did Steve Grogan.

HoosierCat
You're my favorite fake doctor. I'm not a doctor, but I play on on the Internet, eh? The 6-9 months estimate came from Hobson, IIRC. Sounded lengthy to me, too, but then again I'm only a dot.com doc!

They also said Palmer`s could be 12-18 months.Don`t doubt the heart and desire of a person like Pollack. If he doesn`t face any set backs,I look for 6 months to be the longest his rehab takes... kentjett
According to ESPN, if rehab goes well he will be back in '07. I think he will be ready to play by week 6 or 7 if everything goes well. I also think we should move him back to DE where their is not as much full speed collisions as a LB. People say he is too small but I don't buy it, he is just as big as Freeney. However, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Pollack's surgery went so well that doctors have told him that assuming rehab goes well, he can expect to make a full recovery and resume his playing career in 2007 if he so desires. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2719025

I wish they would have provided more depth, but I thought it was interesting that the one point they did make was how well the surgery went and if no setbacks are encountered Pollack is expected back this season. Again, there's nothing complicated about what has to happen for Pollack to recover fully, and it SHOULDN'T be very time consuming. In fact, I'd say the biggest hurdle Pollack will face will come after he's cleared to play again.
