laserluver
I'm sure that Shane is going through his own personal hell right now. Hopefully, he'll get a shot at redemption and he can take comfort in the fact that he has a loyal, supportive and attractive family. He just needs to start getting a little more leg into those kickoffs.

Maybe he can improve his KO distance consistency by next season or maybe the Bengals could consider having a "boomer" for kickoffs and Shane for field goals. In any event, I shouldn't have been quite so harsh in my original post. It doesn't take much to see that he's got a great family and is a quality person. All you have to do to win a stuffed animal at the fair is get a stupid dime on a saucer...It's not as easy as it looks. And you have to get it right EVERY time. Some guys only have to keep their receiver from getting the ball. But no matter how many times they are burned, as long as they stop a few, they keep their jobs. Kickers are not going to make every one. Vinny even missed a few easy ones this year, including a clutch one in the second half of season. Nobody's perfect. Now...happy new year. There's no such thing as a 100% field goal kicker. They miss some. Given all the pressure kicks he's made in the pass I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as NOT a choker. He kicked the ball dead center, and it hooked more than any kick I've ever seen. These things happen. Move on.As for sympathy, I feel sorry for anyone who performs their job under more pressure than you'll ever have the pleasure to experience, only to fail. When you screw up at your job, nobody rubs your nose in it. When Shayne fails, he has morons everywhere playing armchair coach/psychologist.s**t happens. People fail. And I'll be pissed if we have Vandertool or some no-name instead of Shayne next year. I hope Marvin has more sense than you.

How would you like it if you screwed up at work and everyone that you work with started a blog at work saying you should be fired for one mistake? Remember glass houses have terrible heating bills. First of all, I didn't say that he should be fired for the missed field goal. The thing that teed me off the most was the short kickoff in the 4th qtr after the Bengals took the lead. Had the Steelers not gotten such good field position on that possession, then they might not have even scored, thus making the missed field goal moot. However, you are right in one respect. It's one thing to sit here and anonymously rant to a bunch of strangers about the shortcomings of a pro athlete that you don't even know but when that person's sister is part of the audience, then that makes you think twice about what you are saying. We're all disappointed and the miss was the final nail in the coffin but there were a lot of other nails along the way. People think that the kicker's job is a piece of cake but many times, they are the ones who the outcome of the game all boils down to. That's a lot of pressure. I'm glad that Shane's sis is a participant on this board because it has made me re-examine my feelings and take a look at the situation in a different context. It's also made me think more about how what we say and the words that we use can hurt people. I now look back at my original post and am not very proud of it. Spor_tees
Maybe Shayne should take roids like that one punter Saurbrun, so he can get longer kick-offs...Ok just kidding! Though that Sauerbrun guy never did get any kind of suspension.
cincyhokie
BengalSIS,Hey I had the opportunity of meeting Shayne a few times while I went to VT as I was friends with his longsnapper Cliff Anders. Both very good guys. I'm sure Shayne's feeling the pain of the VT choke to UGA on top of the Bengals loss. Anyway, thanks for your input and Happy New Year to you. Kazkal
Shayne did choke a big kick but he's still no vendjact or how ever you spell it...I'll still support him though hes a good kicker just with a bad kick in rainy weather and a sloppy ball. rwjcgc
Fans have the right to complain or cheer about the performance of the players and/or coaches. I haven't read anything posted here hateful or out of line. This fan output is one of the main functions of this board. No one is trying to hurt other's feelings, just pointing out problems with the team and offering suggestions. As for Shayne, I'm sure he is a great person. He blew a big chance. I think he should have to re-compete for his job next season. I have doubts of his ability to put this behind him. GregCook
I think this will rankle Marvin no doubt. That miss though was a single point of failure to a season full of missed opportunities by many, many guys. Maybe we should force Carson to compete because of that overthrow to TJ in Denver? It cost us that game too.In short, Marvin has many problems to fix and I don't think Shane is anywhere close to the top 5. Of course its up to Shane to forget about this and not let it take up residency in his mind, otherwise he will be replaced sometime in 2007.Fans have the right to complain or cheer about the performance of the players and/or coaches. BengalSIS
Fans have every right to complain. No doubt. And Shayne should be kicking against someone EVERY preseason. It keeps kickers sharp and focused. Everyone knows they can run faster if they are running against someone else. It doesn't matter how much they want to run faster by themselves, it's the little extra that comes from competition.
cincy9275
sorry if i made Shayne's sis mad but the fact is that shayne missed the biggest kick in his time here period. then people say well if you screw up at your job does that mean you should be fired. well if it was miss placing something small or if i forget to turn in some minor paper work no. if i cost my company lets say a 50,000 thousand dollar job you can bet your ass i would be gone the next day. like i said before it's not how many kicks you make it's the ones you make! that's why vinatieri is know as the best in the game because he don't miss kicks that win championships or kicks that will get you in to the playoffs. i mean the most accurate kicker of all time does not even have a job right now does he. i did not say shanye was a bad guy or that he should be cut. i shayne choked and should have to earn his spot next season. then to compare a franchise qb to a kicker is just plain stupid. franchise qb's are not a dime a dozen kicker are. compared to everyone else on the team a kicker has the easiest job. i mean what does there day consist of showing up do a little stretching maybe work out stand off to the side and kick some balls. yea that's real tough. hell if you listen to players talk about kickers they don't even consider them as real players. i fell bad for the guy but the fact is he missed the biggest kick of his pro career here and should expect some harsh criticism. i expect his sis to stand up for him she should props to her .
