Tight End

Michael Gaines out of Central Florida is still a work in progress. As a matter of fact, most draft experts feel that if your name isn't " Kellen " or " Ben " as in Kellen Winslow jr.,Ben Troupe,Ben Watson, and Ben Hartsock , that you probably don't have a high grade as a tight end.

However there are quite a few players that I think could be drafted by Cincinnati and could easily push Kelly,or Stewart off the roster.

1. Kris Wilson te, Pittsburgh. - Very adept at running routes, decent blocker, and one of the main reasons Larry Fitzgerald had the success he did. 6'3 246lbs. with an average 40' time of 4.80 has the athleticism to play the nfl position.

2. Tim Euhus te, Oregon St.6'5 250, 4.85 can simply catch everything thrown towards him. His blocking shouldn't be much of a question mark considering Steven Jackson ran behind him to a first round grade !

* As for Michael Gaines, being out of football for a year is why he probably won't be considered until late day 2. However 6'2 275lbs. with a 4.99 '40 time, added with his production means he has some sleeper potential.

Jeremi Johnson wasn't a work in progress, as a matter of fact, with his pro day workouts last year, and his production at W.Kentucky he worked himself up to about the # 4 spot on fullbacks .

Gaines was out of school last year, and couldn't hold an official pro-day because he was kicked out of school for bad grades.!

* Marvin doesn't take a "keen" eye to those type of players. Plus considering that all footage on him is from his junior year, and he still showed up at the combine weighing 275lbs. and not running all that fast, means that he ( Michael Gaines) might not be drafted at all.

chris what are you talking about? last year the whole talk was that he was going to have to mold and condition johnson to be a fullback that can block. He had hardly any blockin skills, and all of his skills were just instinct. Ya he worked himself up to #4 in fullback rankings for the draft but that still doesnt prove jack crap on the field.

Jditty, I appreciate your arguement, but there is some information that you're lacking with said arguement, and its' called Positional drills.

When players perform for scouts, coaches, etc. etc.. they not only test their physical attributes, i.e. '40 times, shuttle times, etc etc, but more importantly their individual positional drills.

It's the positional drills that really speak as to how a player will perform at the next level. They take your Film to the next level because at that time the coaches or scouts looking at a prospect can "game" the player. Put him in situations, make blocking assignments, catch a pass, run etc etc etc....

The "mold and condition" part you are referring to was J.J.'s weight. The bengals didn't feel that 275lbs. was a weight that he could be effective at. That's why he lost about 20 + lbs. The lighter he got, the more effective a lead blocker he became.

*It Still goes back to my point about Michael Gaines. He's not fast, he's got off the field problems, he hasn't played football in over a year, and he's carrying too much weight. He's a work in progress !! Jeremi Johnson was much further along in his development at his respective position than Gaines is at the same juncture of their careers. Hence the reason why Cincy used a relatively high pick (4th rounder) on him. And Gaines will be lucky to go before the 6th.

We have 4 Tight Ends on the Roster. Why in the sam hell beneath crustations would we draft a TE? I support the fact our combination of TEs isn't working, and non of us believed it would. But unless we drop the talent we have now, there's no way we'll have five on roster, unless I'm missing something.

Hey I agree Kirk, but Marvin said it himself that at times last year our offense became predictable because of who was on the field.

ex.

1. Schobel, probably a pass.

2. Kelly, short yardage run,

3. Stewart, run, maybe playaction..

- Marvin talked about finding a guy that could block, catch,be a deep threat , all at the same time, that would help CJ, and Peter in the passing game, so defenses couldn't dictate the te position because of who was on the field.

One thing that we all can agree with , is that Cincy' hasn't had an elite TE since maybe the '95 and '96 season with Tony Mcgee, or really since Rodney Holman of the late 80s'.

80 Jason Peters Tight End Arkansas

Year: Jr Height: 6-5 Weight: 320 40: 5.07 Hometown: Queen City, TX

Positives: Jason is one of the best blocking tight ends in the draft. He is big and powerful. Has a strong lower body and a strong sturdy frame. It's difficult for defensive backs to bring him down. He has really developed as a receiver. Shows a lot of natural pass catching ability. He knows how to get open and use his body to shield off defenders. Jason should be able to contribute immediately in two tight end sets and on special teams. He has soft hands and is really athletic for a man his size. Has a lot of upside.

Negatives: Jason needs to shed a few pounds to be able to fully maximize his talent. He needs to show more of a commitment during the off-season. If he doesn't shed the weight, he may not hold up that long in the NFL. He's still developing as a receiver and lacks some experience after leaving school early. Jason is still developing his skills, and doesn't have the speed to stretch defenses vertically
