Stone Mountain Ultra-Secure Tier-4 Data Center Mega-Complex

Global Data Corporation (and the wholly owned GDC subsidiary Stone Mountain Development Company, LLC, a Kentucky Limited Liability Company) are designing and building one of the largest subterranean tier-4 data center mega-complexes in the world. The 186 acre site with 2.6 million square feet complex is planned for one and 2 story Tier-4 data centers deep inside a solid stone mountain. Data center buildings are designed with varying size configurations of from 5,000 to 100,000 square foot stand alone concrete and steel buildings inside the mountain. The 100 million cubic foot mega-complex dwarfs all other such complexes. As a comparison, this ultra-secure mega-complex is more than a dozen times larger than the well known NORAD complex built inside Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado.

Some of the current and planned features include multi-homed redundant fiber optic cables that spread out over a 10 state multi-route fiber network to interconnect with every major telecom provider in hundreds of separate POP facilities in every major, and many minor cities, in the Midwest, North East, South and East Coast. In addition to the multi-directional, multi-routed fiber network to these hundreds of POP, these carrier hotels then interconnect to virtually every major internet backbone to expand its fiber reach globally. Current and planned power is 400 MW supplied from multiple providers in redundant fashion, with additional onsite sub-stations and an additional planned 200 MW on-site Co-Generation power plant. The addition of Earth Stations for satellite uplinks and down links, microwave and air-fiber connection, on-site power generation with on-site fuel sources, on-site water sources and waste treatment means that this mountain mega-complex can continue un-interrupted operations for an indefinite period of time, no matter what natural or man-made disaster occurs outside of the impenetrable fortress.

Security is as important as sustainability. Stone Mountain is planned as one of the most secure facilities in the world. With its 40+ foot thick solid stone floors, walls and ceilings, its planned 100+ man highly trained armed security force and anti-terrorist super-squad (Comprised of highly trained former special forces personnel), as well as sophisticated electronic security and surveillance systems, biometric entry systems, no external vehicle on site rule, barricades, natural mountain top and river barriers at the base of the mountain, concrete and steel barricades, tower guards, razor wire, alarmed perimeter fencing, ground sensors and no un-escorted visitor rule, Stone Mountain is one of the most secure data center complexes in the world, be it Military, Government or Civilian. Additionally, no vehicle can approach within 200 feet of the complex and ALL persons and packages have to go through electronic and physical security screening prior to entering or leaving the complex. The mega-complex has a zero-tollerance policy as far as security violations are concerned. The security force is planned to be supplemented with on-site fire, medical and emergency services personnel and facilities. The Comand-and-Control Center, with 3 foot thick steel re-inforced concrete walls deep inside the mountain fortress, can monitor and control the entire interior and exterior of the mega-complex.

The 12 separate heavily fortified and guarded entrances into the complex are to keep the areas totally separate thereby allowing even authorized and escorted access to less than 8% of the complex. The interior unmarked stand-alone steel and concrete data center buildings, with separate biometric controls and heavy electronic security and surveillance, create a fortress inside a fortress, inside a mountain, inside a heavily guarded and secured perimeter scenario.

The very low power costs in Kentucky, the natural cooling factor of the subterranean nature of the complex, the mountain top protection from flooding and the ultra-high level of redundancy and security, as well as the sites close proximity to major metro areas (the site is within an 8 hour drive of 2/3 of the US population) makes it the ONLY logical choice for securing your companies extremely valuable electronic assets while giving you the highest level of confidence in business continuity and disaster recovery no matter what may happen in the world.
