Defensive Free Agents in '07

Did we sign Sam Adams to a one year deal or a longer one? I am still not sure if he is worth keeping for next year. He did make a big play last week at NO but that's been about it this year. Coming into camp in shape next year would be mandatory in my book also.

I was gonna put up the ame article by Pastaboy. Even though I agree that Thomas might only have a couple years left in him, that's who I want first, Adallius Thomas. The man is a BEAST.

Wouldn't at all mind Lance Briggs either.

Kerney will come with too high a price tag and I think when someone signs him, it drives us out of the market for J Smith.

Probably can forget about players like Adalius Thomas, Lance Briggs, Nate Clements, Asante Samuel, Leonard Little etc because they'll either get franchised or command huge dollars. The Bengals won't get a windfall if Steiny and Justin leave but will have to pay through the nose for them to stay so even if 1 stays, much of what they'll have to work with to lure free agents will be gone. If they sign neither, then maybe they stake a lump sum on 1 player, but still seems doubtful.

As such, I'd like to see them get in the mix for a couple players who will command some serious coin but probably not top dollar in Bryan Thomas RDE Jets and EJ Henderson WSLB Vikes. They should also pursue a nickel this year and they might get a decent value on Lenny Walls who could take Tory James spot when Joseph kicks down to the slot in the nickel.

There's some solid TEs up for grabs this year but the most likely scenario would seem status quo and the Bengals re-sign both Kelly and Stewart. They'll have to decide on Ronnie Ghent next year and still have an excellent pass ctaching TE in Tim Day on the PS. But they can improve the position in some respects by pursuing the following TEs:

1. David Martin-Pack: Probably not the line blocker or lead in the I that Kelly is but unquestionably a better receiver.

2. Eric Johnson-9ers: He's expendable when Vernon Davis returns but he might be the most versatile TE for the Bengals need bridging both TE positions with a heavy emphasis on receiving production but also maybe adequate enough for line, I and blitz blocking from split backfield.

3. Daniel Graham-Pats: Pretty much the same as above.

4. Donald Lee-Pack: Straight replacement for Tony Stewart.

Kabeer shouldn't be listed as a free agent. He signed a 6-year extension in 2003 but is scheduled to make a base of $5 mill next year and has an outside shot as a cap casualty. Akbar OTOH is a free agent and is one right now after getting released by the Bolts a couple days ago. There's some lesser 250 poundish edge rushers who are upcoming free agents in the Eagles Juqua Thomas and the Texans Antwaan Peek.

Pastabelly had a decent recent article about free agents for 2007:

Charles Grant would be a force at LDE and might have enough run pursuit in him to handle the other DE position. A lesser version of Grant who might be better suited to play RDE would be the Bills Chris Kelsay who currently starts at LDE.
