Gutless D/Fire Bresh/D Sucks Megathread

I seriously doubt that Bres will be fired. In fact, I doubt Marvin Lewis even blames him for the failure since Marvin Lewis knows better than anyone that his defensive schemes are always built around his LB's, and this isn't a starting unit that anyone envisioned, or could get to play at a high level quickly.

Brilliant stuff, as usual.

Marvin didn't wait long to answer the Bres critics. Enjoy.

Lewis: 'I've underachieved'

BY MARK CURNUTTE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The Bengals are under .500 for the first time since the end of the 2004 season, and head coach Marvin Lewis is not happy about it.

The Bengals defense allowed a franchise-record 42 points in one half, the second half, on Sunday and lost 49-41 to San Diego.

The NFL record for most points in a half is 49: Green Bay scored 49 in the first half in a 1983 game against Tampa Bay, and Chicago scored 49 in the second half of a 1941 game against Philadelphia.

Lewis this afternoon placed responsibility for the second-half defensive collapse Sunday primarily on players and not his assistant coaches, including coordinator Chuck Bresnahan.

"They've got to be more responsible; at some point, players have to make plays," Lewis said this afternoon, a day after his team blew a 28-7 lead and lost 49-41 to San Diego.

Lewis also promised "subtle changes" in playing time for defensive players but withheld specifics. Asked if there would be any changes in the starting lineup, Lewis said, "Wait until Sunday."

The Bengals (4-5) will play Sunday at New Orleans against the Saint (6-3).

“It’s a desperate situation, to the point if we want to make the playoffs we can’t afford to lose another game,” wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said today.

Lewis said he would not assume play-calling responsibilities for the defense from Bresnahan, similar to what he did in a 2004 game at Cleveland when Lewis took over coordinator's work from Leslie Frazier.

The head coach also took responsibility. "I've underachieved as a coach," Lewis said.

Lewis simultaneously criticized his defense -- "We played like we had three thumbs out there" -- and defended it. "We had a bad half," Lewis said. "You (media) were praising them a few weeks ago when they were holding people to (low-point totals)."

He called the defensive performance the result of mental and physical errors, both of which, he said, "are correctable."

I don't even want to think about what Drew Brees will do to them with the time he is going to have in the pocket. Hell, we may turn Terrence Copper into a superstar next week. I know they won't be able to handle Colston, and if their kick coverage doesn't improve next week, Lewis/Bush will take it to the house. I am sorry but after that crap yesterday, I have lost all faith in the defense to stop anyone.

Please no...Let's not see Terrence Copper become a superstar. Course wouldn't be hard to believe after yesterday. At least the Saints don't have the TE threat that the Bengals seem like they have to deal with every week. Deuce is no LT but Reggie Bush poses some of the same problems that LT posed on offense. But that threat is all less than it was yesterday. True about the returns even though the Burner is a trip in his own right.

I still think the defense is better than last year, especially at the end of last year. But.....42 points in 1 half does indeed do more than just shake confidence. The low point totals vs. the Bucs, the Panthers and the Ratbirds (at least by the D) have pretty much faded to black now and Drew Brees is unquestionably an outstanding QB. So lots of points sounds right, just not so many as yesterday.
