News and opinion ...

NEWS: The Bengals will release no information until Marvin Lewis' news conference at 3 p.m. today on any of the players injured during the game Sunday against Cleveland.

Linebacker David Pollack suffered a neck trauma and was believed to have spent the night at University Hospital. Center Rich Braham has what Lewis termed a "deep knee bruise." Safety Dexter Jackson suffered a severe right ankle sprain and was in a protective walking boot after the game.

The Bengals are a contender. If they've successfully groomed backups and draft picks to fill in for injured starters, they've arrived as a consistent playoff team. It's what the likes of Pittsburgh, Jacksonville and Tennessee once did year in a year out in the old AFC Central before realignment.

OPINION: I might be in the minority, but I still don't understand why the Bengals did not make more of an effort to sign Eric Steinbach to a contract extension. To the organization's credit, they locked up offensive tackles Levi Jones and Willie Anderson. Good for everyone involved.

But Steinbach proved again Sunday why he is the most valuable offensive linemen on the team and one of the top players on the entire roster. Not many guards can pop outside and play left tackle without missing a beat. The team can trumpet rookie Andrew Whitworth all it wants, but he will never be the pro tackle Steinbach is.

I've said many times that Steinbach is a left tackle playing out of position at guard, which he plays on an exceptionally high level.

I've heard this opinion before... but it has never been substantiated. Sure... they felt more comfortable putting Steiny as the LT because he's got a few more years experience in the NFL, but there is no reason to think that Whitworth isn't as flexible. He played LT in college, and was one of the league's best at the position. He also showed his skill at the position in the pre-season. I don't understand.

I just fear that when we do get to the SB and win it this year or next year, our team will fall apart and want more money to where we won't be able to re-sign everyone. Then the next year come back and be terrible, like some SB teams do (Oakland, TB, and hopefully the Steelers this year).

As for Jackson though, I've yet to hear anything either.

In a somewhat garbled update to his Pollack story, Hobs gives a few more details about all the other bangs and dents:

Center Rich Braham and safety Dexter Jackson won't play Sunday against Pittsburgh, with indciatons Braham could be out several weeks with a knee problem and Jackson possibly out at least a couple of weeks with a sprained ankle. It looks like left tackle Levi Jones will play and wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Tab Perry might.

Good news on Levi, at least. Really, then, the big question is, how confident are they in Bluto? Should they leave him in at center or put Eric there and keep Whitworth in at guard?

After placing Pollack on injured reserve, the Bengals weren’t looking to make an immediate move to fill the roster spot in order to see how the injuries play out during the week, and it doesn’t look good at early indications

They could do nothing and wait to fill the spot with linebacker Odell Thurman when he returns off a drug suspension Oct. 2, but the injury situation looks like it could dictate more action.

Certainly does, but I don't look for them to fill Pollack's slot with a LB. Geoff doesnt either.

With Perry leaving the facility on crutches Monday with an injured hip, Houshmandzadeh still questionable with a bruised heel and Antonio Chatman still nursing an injured groin, the Bengals may have to go to the practice squad and get a fifth receiver for the Steelers in rookies Reggie McNeal or Glenn Holt.

Or they could peruse the waiver wire for a special teams guy like Perry, but they would sorely miss his return abilities that broke open last year’s game in Pittsburgh with a 94-yarder.

Now that Jackson is going to miss what appears to be at least a couple of weeks, another option for Pollack’s spot could be calling up Miami of Ohio safety John Busing.

I think WR may be the best option. We have Indiana Jones as well as Kilmer behind Madieu and K2, and Ratliff can always go in in a pinch.

... Also, they said 2 weeks on Jackson and Braham. ...
Thanks for the on topic info ;).

I would not want to minimize the loss of any starter, but as it pertains to the Squealers next week, losing Dexter Jackson will have the biggest impact. He was strong insurance against the big play. We have seen what Kaesviharn can do, he is not cutting it. LBs are deep, OL is deep, receivers are deep - safety continues to be our vulnerability since we can't keep two starting quality safeties on the field with any regularity. Madieu can not do it all by himself, as Marvin says, it takes 11 guys.
