USA Today labels Geathers "Cheap Shot"

Alright, I couldn't resist firing back at USA Today's Saraceno after reading his article yesterday. Below is the link and my response....am I offsides here?

USAToday.com - Jon Saraceno article 9/12

Jon,

I enjoyed your article and am admittedly an AVID Bengal fanatic.

I even agree with your premise that punishment should be meted-out for

unnecessary hits on quarterbacks. Although the Geathers' hit had some

extenuating circumstances - he was already fully into his motion to make the hit

and he was blocked into Green - he could have perhaps "let up" at the moment of impact.

But with Carson Palmer's injury all too fresh in the minds of Cincinnati fans,

we have wondered (and discussed on Internet Boards) where was this outcry

last season when Kimo Von Oelhoffen dove into the knee of Palmer - effectively ending

the season for Cincinnati in a pivotal playoff contest? Yes! Von Oelhoffen did not intend

to hurt Palmer as was evident in his reaction after the play. And Kimo was also rolling off

of a block to make the play. Extenuating circumstances? Perhaps! But the reality is that

it was a low hit on a quarterback AFTER the ball was released. There was no flag on the

Von Oelhoffen play either. At least it may be argued that Trent Green put himself at risk,

as quarterbacks do when they scramble downfield. Palmer was in the pocket. It should

also be noted ( in a "which came first? - the chicken or the egg" argument ) that perhaps

Green slid late only after noticing the impending violent collision - it was inevitable at the time

that he slid.

Who decides? Yes, the league will make a decision regarding Geathers in the near future.

But the only "cheap shot" in this subject, I believe, is the label you penned (typed) to describe

the play. Certainly, regardless of how the NFL labels this play, although they are similar,

the league will not retro-actively address the Von Oelhoffen play of last year; and I presume

you will not choose to "label" the Palmer injury in the same light.
