Blazing Bennie

There have been some questions on how fast Bennie Brazell is. I think this should answer them:

"At 6:45 p.m., LSU senior Bennie Brazell appeared headed for aN upset win over Florida sophomore Kerron Clement in the men's 400 hurdles. Clement led midway through the final turn but began chopping his steps over the hurdles.

Brazell, a 2000 U.S. Olympian, stormed past his Southeastern Conference rival in the homestretch, taking a four-meter lead over the 10th and final hurdle.

But Clement corraled Brazell with one of the most stunning run-ins ever seen, winning in a collegiate-record 47.56. Brazell's second-place time of 47.67 was also faster than the previous collegiate and meet record of 47.85, set by Kevin Young of UCLA in 1988. Young set the still-standing world record of 46.78 in 1992. If Clement irons out his step problems, he's a good bet to supplant Young as the world record-holder. And who's to say Brazell won't be there right beside him at the finish?

At 8:35 p.m., a third collegiate record was set in the men's 4 x 400 relay. The LSU foursome of Reginald Darder, Kelly Willie, Brazell and Xavier Carter won in 2 minutes, 59.59 seconds, topping the previous NCAA record of 2:59.91, set by UCLA in 1988. Arizona State and Oregon also broke 3:01, with sixth place going to Baylor in 3:01.83. Top to bottom, it was the highest-quality 4 x 400 relay race ever run outside the Olympics or World Championships."

Anyone who can run that fast in the 400 (and especially the 400 hurdles) deserves some major props. You have to have a lot of stamina as well.

Fast, both the big hype of camp...both to small for the NFL in reality...

Considering the small role he'd be doomed to playing as a Bengal early in his career, I don't think his size matters in the least. Pure speed receivers usually fail as number ones, but not necessarily as number fives. Broussard never really garnered the attention in camp that Brazell has either.

Now if they could only figure out a way to install hurdles on the gridiron, I'd bet young Bobo here would be a Pro Bowler.

No question about the gazelle legs but let's see about the alligator arms.

BENNIE CAN JUST ENVISION THOSE TRIPPED UP SQUEALERS LAYING ON THE GROUND AND GRABBING FOR HIS KNEES, HIS HURDLES. IT'S ALL THE SAME. I WONDER WHAT HIS VERTICAL IS?

Does Bennie remind anyone to much of Jamal Broussard?

No, he reminds me more of Willie Gault. As for being too small, Bennie (6' 1", 175) is close to the same size as Marvin Harrison (6', 185), Jerome Mathis (5' 11", 184), and Steve Smith (5' 9" 185)

Good stuff right there jrandom....

If Bennie = 1/2 of Willie Gault we have a good one.

Bennie does not remind me of Broussard at all....

Steve Smith (5' 9" 185) and Santana Moss (5' 10" 190) were the two leaders for receiving this year. I know the big 215 lb receivers are what most people crave these days... but little guys are still getting it done.

I don't know if it would hamper his speed at all... but I would still probably like to see him add 10 lbs. 175 is awfully small... especially given that he's over 6 ft.

Two out of how many small receivers are worth having in the NFL? Sure, the top two guys are smaller, but after that, where's the next small guy come in?

There is a reason bigger taller faster is wanted.

Relax people, it is not like he will be the #1 WR. He will be a situational player and will take some coverage away from CJ and TJ when he is in. His speed makes the WR's corp more versatile and dangerous.

Exactly the point I tried to make. He doesn't have to be a prototype WR as a number 4 or 5 down the road.

Let's be factual. A hurdler of Bennie's stature just can't afford to carry any extra poundage. It'll come as he works out. Hue Jackson has praised not only his speed, but his hands, route running and blocking ability, saying he's far ahead of where the coaching staff thought he'd be. That's encouraging. Bennie may not be bigger or taller, but are there that many WRs in the league who are going to be faster?

Yeah , he's got speed, but when does he really get on the field other than special teams..??

If we go 5 Wide , ( providing that everyone is healthy ) he still wouldn't see the field because there's 5 proven veterans ahead of him. You may have heard of them..

if not..

1. Chad Johnson

2. T.J. Houshmanzadeh

3. Chris Henry

4. Antonio Chatman

5. Kelley Washington.......

The real reason why he makes this roster is because Henry gets a suspension sooner or later, and Kelley Washington is trade bait.

This is not meant to be a negative post, but i'm a realist.

* AS for Bennie being like Jamal Broussard, I don't see it. Broussard was like a scat back playing wide-receiver. We were all in love with him because Peter Warrick was hurt and gone, and we weren't sure how well T.J. could perform after one year as a starter.

But like I said in another forum, It's great to have the problems that we have. These are good problems, when a team doesn't have enough room for good football players.

Like the Man Law commercials, how about the FAN Fanatic Laws..

Law # 1. How about the NFL let teams lock up their practice squad so other teams can't just pluck them whenever they want them. :sure::cheers:

I don't have an issue with his size. I am more worrid about his hands. Sprinters don't usually kow what todowhen the bal hits thier hands, a la renaldo nehamiah.

Don't count out Tab or McNeal. Remember the value of versatility.

Did you mean Orlando Jones??? Bennie has pretty good hands. He definitely

would have played more for LSU i f he had concentrated more on football and less on the Olympics.

Bennie has been tearing training camp up until tweaking his hamstring. Bennie will be a Bengal

and he will make an impact.

His size isn't too much of a concern of mine. He's not slotted for any of the top 3 WR spots, and wideouts don't really take heavy hits very often. Plus, being breadstick thin isn't an issue for most NFL wideouts...including Chris Henry.

Yeah, I know Henry is taller and heavier, but he's also built whisper thin.
