Whitworth, Peko, McNeil, Kilmer, and Brazell in the fold. Joseph and Brooks are close and should be signed before camp.

Whitworth leads raft of deals

Most, if not all, of the Bengals' nine draft picks are expected to be at Saturday's first practice with second-rounder Andrew Whitworth agreeing to terms Friday and the club announcing deals for fourth-rounder Domata Peko and seventh-rounder Ethan Kilmer.

An industry source said sixth-rounder Reggie McNeal has also agreed to terms with indications that the entire rookie class could be done signing as soon as Friday night with talks scheduled with the agent for first-rounder Johnathan Joseph.

The other seventh-rounder, Bennie Brazell, signed earlier this week.

Middle linebacker Ahmad Brooks is also believed to have a deal in time for practice. Brooks, the Bengals supplemental pick in the third round out of Virginia, is also going to get snaps at middle backer and should be easy to slot since he shares it with Patriots tight end David Thomas, also the 22nd pick of the third round. Brooks’s agent, Greg Williams, said the sides are close to the Thomas deal signed two days ago: A $640,750 signing bonus with minimum salaries over four years with incentives that can increase the last year’s salary to the tender number for that season.

So between the confirmed signings of Peko, Kilmer and Brazell, and the expected signings of Whitworth, Brooks, and McNeal, that leaves Joseph, third-rounder Frostee Brooks, and fifth-rounder A.J. Nicholson.

With middle linebacker Odell Thurman suspended the first four games because of a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, he’s allowed to practice and play in games before Sept. 4 at the club’s discretion. His agent, Safarrah Lawson, had no statement Thursday, saying only his client is ready to put the past behind him and that he’s looking forward to practicing this week.

It's up to the discretion of head coach Marvin Lewis.

The agent for Joseph said Friday is a key day in talks after Jason Chayut agreed to a deal Thursday night. for the 20th pick, Chiefs defensive end Tamba Hali.

A deal looks to be looming for Joseph, particularly since the players sandwiched around him at No. 23 and No. 25 got done Friday. ESPN.com reported at No. 23 Bucs guard Davin Joseph agreed to a five-year, $8.2 million deal. The Steelers, at No. 25, have signed an undisclosed five-year deal with Ohio State wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

Whitworth, the left tackle from LSU, got a deal sligthly better than the pick before him at No. 55, said agent Steve Colson. Colson wouldn't divulge terms, but said, "There was very little ironing to do."

One thing I'm interested in - they're talking about how it was supposed to be so much harder to sign the rookies this year with the rookie pool in the new CBA. Add to that the fact that the Bengals have an extra 3rd rounder. Are they punting on Frostee? I sure wouldn't want to give a signing bonus to a guy who could do time, that's for sure.

I'm guessing they're not punting on AJ or freezing out Frostee. That said, all of the teams are trying to sort out what disciplinary steps can be taken under the new CBA so there may be a delay of a day or two due to the lack of boilerplate styled contractual language.
