Time to throw some $ to the D?

All of the Offense that has gotten extensions have deserved it. Many of them are among the best in the league at their positions.

However, if this team is going to make a serious SB run for many years, its time to pay the Defense. Now i admit that there is not the talent on the D that the offense has. And we cant throw good money at guys that dont deserve it. I'm sure that I'm not saying anything that ML doesnt already know or is already trying to do. I'm just saying our cap maybe getting unbalanced.

I guess the first step is to draft talented guys who develop into the best at their position in the league. We only have a few that come to mind. Madieu, Pollack, and Odell are the only ones who may come away with a huge payday someday.

Does any one know the % of cap spent on the O vs the D?

Ox,

Thanks for the info. Very helpful.

I added up the #'s and these are rounded figures that include Levi's signing but DOES NOT include any rookies who will sign in the next couple of days.

Offenses salary for '06: 53,912,000 or 59.4% of signed money

Defenses salary for '06: 36,830,000 or 40.6% of signed money

When was the last time a team won a SB without a great defense? Seriously I can't think of any besides the Rams, and their D was pretty solid that yr.

2004 -- the Steelers' defense sucked. If it wasn't for Ben, they would never have made the post-season. :phish:

True...and without that miraculous performance by Big Ben in the superbowl, that defense would have caused their downfall.

I dont think there will be any money left to spend on the D.

The D will have to get better via the draft.

The O-line is eating up all of the money.

Its not a bad move to lock up the O-line Carson must be protected at all costs.

He is the Bengals.

Besides, with the exception of the pass rush the personel on D is pretty good.

Those aren't surprising numbers. Not only is the offense way ahead of the defense in terms of production, but most of it's established stars have had contracts come due within the last couple of years. In addition, Marvin's first couple of drafts were heavily weighted towards the offensive side of the ball.

The defense has gotten far more attention recently, but those deals are still fresh. And I don't expect the numbers quoted above to even up quickly, if ever. Justin Smith, Brian Simmons, John Thornton, and Tory James are all highly paid veterans who are probably playing their last season as Bengals.

Absolutely.

And the draft becomes even more important for the defense given, like Hair's got Thornton, Justin, James and Simmons are probably on the outs after this year. Joseph has to show he can start at CB. Given the premium price for decent DEs, somebody has to emerge as Smith's successor at DE. Landon Johnson looks like he might make for a decent starting WSLB or Brooks if he can swing it, so they're maybe all right there for a couple years. Fortunately Thornton would be the easiest to replace but still somebody has to emerge and at least show the durability and backside pursuit that Thornton has.
