The_Next_Big_Thing
The thought of trading Rudi Johnson for John Abraham makes me shudder.I would have done it.Huge risk? You betcha. But huge reward if it pans out. Abraham is an elite player -- and plays a position where it's very, very hard to find his caliber of guy. The downside is his injury history.Conversely, Rudi is Unbreakable. But he is IMHO "only" very good, not elite, and very good RBs seem a lot easier to come by than elite DTs. Still, with Carson iff you want a good run game... but a good D would be nice too.So you'd rather have an elite player who can't stay on the field than a not quite elite player who never stops doing his job, game after game, year after year, continually improving over the previous year each time?Come on now, it's a no brainer to take the guy who gives you 16+ games a season of quality over a guy who gives you only 10 or fewer with more quality but less quantity. ArmyBengal
Another thing is for how many Prisco's there are without Rudi in the top 10, there are just as many that know the truth. Rudi is top 10 easy and will again have another steller year. He just doesn't fumble either !!!WHODEY !!!
HairOnFire
First he was dissed, then he was pimped. I just watched NFL Live on ESPN today and Rudi Johnson was one of the 5 AFC backs they labeled as being elite. Yup, elite. "The toughest back to tackle in the NFL today. He's the one who gives the Bengals their balance." ---M. Hodge "Remarkable consistency is what makes him elite. He's scored 12 TD's each of the last two seasons." --- T. Jackson "He's a guy who comes out and gives you 17-22 carries a game...sometimes a few more...and he really sets the table." --- T.Jackson "Is he flashy? No. But here's what he is. He's tough to tackle, he'll get you 3-5 everytime he touches the ball, he has the potential to get you 100-120 yeards every game, and you're going to HAVE a running game every game you play." --- M. Hodge "He'll never make headlines because he plays with a QB who will arguably be the best in the NFL in a year or so." --- M. Hodge More? The segment closed with both Hodge and Jackson claiming that they wouldn't trade Rudi Johnson for Larry Johnson.

Abraham is an elite player -- and plays a position where it's very, very hard to find his caliber of guy. The downside is his injury history. In the case of 1,000 yard backs, I agree.... But I think Rudi is in a class above just that (whether he is "elite" or not is up for debate, I don't care honestly).Last season, there were 14 players that finsished with at least 10 sacks (Abraham had 10.5). There were only seven players who rushed for 1450 or more yards (Rudi had 1458).Along with that, I just don't think an upper echelon defensive end can impact a football game as much as an upper echelon running back. It's a tough call though.
futurebengal08
You can't win if you can't run...and even elite defensive ends can be shut down by determined lineman (see Indy game)

So you are comfortable with Perry and Watson in the backfield sharing time huh ?? Well, at least we would be getting our money out of Abraham because his ass would always be on the field when we weren't able to run out the clock to secure a win at the end of a game... Seriously though, it would be an interesting thought, but I just can't see it ever happening and from my viewpoint on how Rudi always impacts a game, I never want to see it happening...WHODEY !!! Rudi is one of our best defensive players. Without him, we run the no huddle all the time, and lose the time of possession battle every single week. We won 58 to 48, but we let them score 48 points. Thats pretty bad. My point is that I would trade Abraham for Rudi cuz then we wouldnt have to let the brown stains get away with that many points. I aint saying I hate Rudi, IMO Rudi is one of the best RBs in the NFL, but I would also like to have one of the best DEs in the NFL too. I never said you were comfortable either, I was asking a question, hence the little "?" at the end of the sentence... Anyway, yes, I am much more comfortable with our defense than I have been in years. The question is, why aren't you ?? We added Jackson and have Madieu coming back for a safeties, we have a great CB combo in Tory and Deltha, we added big Sam Adams to our D-line, and Pollack has another year in the system and will greatly benefit from this years camp. Add to that our LB corp (minus Odell's trip to stupidville) is getting better and deeper... Abraham would be great, but at the same time, he would not give us on defense what Rudi gives us on offense, meaning, he wouldn't control the game. The problem is, we can't have pro bowl level guys at every position and we already are seeing that problem along our offensive line. Bottom line is, for this team, Rudi has more value than Abraham in my opinion... Don't get me wrong either, I like Abraham, but I love what Rudi brings to our offense and I'm sure Carson would agree with that !!!WHODEY !!! bengalboomer7
Rudi's career is reminding me of how Curtis Martin's went down. Marting was extremely consistent, never got hurt, and always put up good numbers. For years martin churned out 1,000+ yard seasons, but was never considered elite, mainly because it was said he lacked "elite speed" 11,000 yards later and he's a sure fire HOF, whose probably a little overrated now, but deserves it because of past years. Now, I would kill for about 6 more seasons mirroring Curtis Martin #'s
derekshank
That Rudi "headstrong" video is a compilation of what defines Rudi Johnson. For most RB's, you would put together their 2 or 3 60+ yard TD runs intermingled with a couple 15-25 yarders that they managed throughout the season. It would look nice and impressive... but of course the 2 out of 3 times they got stuffed at the line doesn't make the video.Rudi's video is a bunch of 7-9 yard runs. He consistently gets you those yards. He almost never gets less than 3 yards. He's consistent, and incredibly hard to tackle - impossible to arm-tackle, which is why he always gets those yards. He's not flashy... but he gets the job done better and more consistently than just about any RB in football rightnow. Plain and simple... he's the man.
