schnarfer
Our glaring problems toward the end of last season was the gaping holes in the middle of our D-line and our uncanning ability to give up the "big play"...We finally adressed our D-line issues and the rotation of Robinson, Adams and Thorton should be a nice upgrade....The secondary was very over agressive and now we have two outstanding safties that can prevent horrible down-field plays....Offense, If we are healthy, is arguablly one of the best in the business...Right now I can not think of any over-bearingly obvious holes that we had at this time last year....If our defense improves to a top 15 team and our offense stays the course...Then, on paper, we have arguablly one of the most talented teams in the NFL....Im not one to make predictions but if I were a betting man, and I am, I would say that the Steelers are going to take a step back and we should take 2 steps forward.... Stripes
I don't think anyone can disagree considering all the IFs in there.I think there's only one IF left standing between the Bengals and a deep playoff run...----------Cliché Alert------------Palmer's knee. ArmyBengal
"On paper" the Vikings were stacked last year after picking up the FA's they did, but you see where that got them !!! It's all on the field... With the schedule we face this year, I'd say our road is going to be much tougher, but I like the fact that we HAVE to bring it each week to win it all and there are no gimmies. We face the possibility of getting embarrassed REAL BAD if we don't stay focused !!!WHODEY !!!
Kazkal
Bengals just need stay healthy but thats hard for any team to do....last year was decent year besides losing both safeties no other starter seemed to miss more then a few weeks
bengal4life
I hope that with the training camp cut down to 2 weeks this year, that our guys will be conditioned enough to stay healthy through the whole season. It's to bad Marvin can't start camp a week earlier to get a full 3 weeks like last year.

I think Pollack/Smith/Geathers/Robinson can be described in slightly better terms. So I see the Bengals as having probably a slightly below average D Line, although (obviously) not as bad as last year's debacle. The secondary will be better by simply not having OhellImtoast on the field. Given progression of Odell and Pollack, addition of Jackson and Adams, return of Madieu, and some decrease in the performance of the corners (they can't play THAT good again, and new guy won't be ready yet) I'd bet on the D being ranked about 13-20 this year. Just a gut feeling.
ViewFromSec310
As long as Simmons is on the field then there is a huge weakness on the field.
BengalByTheBay
As long as Simmons is on the field then there is a huge weakness on the field. If, as your statement suggests, Brian Simmons turns out to be our biggest defensive liability I think we're in for a very good defensive season. jditty47
i lol at the ppl that think simmons is a liability when he is one of our best all around players. he can do it all, and his stats actually show it.
marylandbengal
Even if our line IS "mediocre", its still upgraded. i think Pollack and Justin (AND Eric Henderson, hopefully) are going to be setting up camp in our opponents backfield. and With madieu and Dexter, our defense is vastly improved. I say 11-5 again (only because of our killer schedule).

I swear, you could hold up a neon sign and he'd still miss it. After what, 9 years, you'd think he'd figure it out.
derekshank
It's a good discussion... but we're all a bit biased. I remember last year (and unfortunately I was one of them) that thought our D-Line was going to be vastly improved. We brought in Bryan Robinson, and he was going to help Thornton produce, Justin Smith was going to change sides and be more effective, and we all had incredibly high hopes for Geathers. Hindsight is 20/20.New off-season, new high-hopes. Pollack should play up to his 1st round potential, Sam Adams should bring the improvement to our line that we were hoping from B. Robinson, and that Dexter Jackson should solve our safety issues. It all looks good, but like the title of the thread... it's on paper. Sure, It looks better than the changes we made last year looked... but right now it is still only looks... and can be seen in a pessimistic light if need be.Adams is old, and wasn't starting in Buffalo at the end of last year. Dexter is also getting older, and as far as coverage goes, he might not be an upgrade from KK at all (although he will be much better in run support), and Pollack... well, there's no doubt he was playing very well at the end of last year, but without the rest of the defense coming together, that doesn't really count for much.Odell and Pollack with a year under their belts, and having Madieu back are great things... but we still need a more consistent pass rush, and if the D-Line doesn't play better, we'll have many of the same problems that we struggled through last year. So... here's to hoping our D-Line problems are a thing of the past, but looking good on paper doesn't mean a whole lot to me anymore.
