bengalboomer7
Really, I could care less if Nicholson or Henry or Frostee Rucker or whoever the hell else on this team is a felon or trouble-maker or head case, as long as they can play football at a high level. Despite the league-wide lip service paid to good character, its all about winning. If a dumbass like Nicholson can stay out of jail and make this team better, I'll be glad he's wearing Bengal stripes. Look at Chris Henry. The best rookie WR in the league last year. Explosive, fast, good hands and willing to make the catch in traffic over the middle. And apparently an incorrigible and irresponsible nitwit. I don't care how many guns he waves on a saturday night as long as he's ready to play on Sunday. Obviously, if these guys keep this up they'll be in jail or on suspension, and not on the field. Until then, it moves me not at all.I bet your tune would change quick if that gun was pointed in your direction
stilldiesel
At least it was your 5th round draft pick that was arrested. Our 1st rounder was thrown in the clink. That being said, jay walking and getting pissed at the cop b/c you were avoiding a crowd of people does not equate to felony theft. I believe Nicholson was also charged with some type of sexual crime. He is a 5th rounder and Marvin will probably find some gem UFA to take his roster spot. IMO you guys should not get too worked up about this.

stilldiesel
hey didn't santonio holmes just get arrested for disorderly conduct...yeah shut up steeler fansIf you read my post I said that our 1st rounder was arrested for a small offense. This would be a big deal if it was a 1st day pick for the Bengals. However, 5th rounders are outshined in training camp by UDFA's all the time. I don't think it is a big deal for the Bengals. kingwilly
I don't buy the idea that it is no great loss if Aj is to get charged/covicted/booted since he is only a 5th rounder....Every pick has a potential. The Benglas burned a good r5 spot on AJ hoping this kind of thing would not happen. One problem is that there were other non-issue players available. So, the risk-reward for AJ may have been steeper.I also don't buy the "every team has this trouble" concept. Some teams do. Some don't. The NFL is not above its share of problems and those problems mirror society's problems. From murder-for-hire, to drugs, to DUI, to domestic abuse, to tax-evasion, etc. It runs the gamut but I'm not about to just shrug it off, especially when we have a very recent spat of issues and the team's coach explicitly states character means more than ever.True, AJ will get his day in court but if the facts pan out as true, him robbing a former teammates house with his buddy AFTER he got drafted is a monumental error. The main charges, Felony Burglary of a Dwelling and Felony Grand Theft are not "light" charges. Having an arrest warrant with these charges brought up, and with his buddy singing like a canary are very bad signs.GROIII...I don't know what kind of reaction you are hoping to get but insulting my "nickname" and referencing "man-hood" speaks volumes about your ability to discuss an issue and the intelligence behind your keyboard...keep it up, you're looking real smooth. The "every pick has potential" rant cuts both ways. The very potential Nicholson undeniably has made his selection in the late 5th round an acceptable risk that Marvin Lewis was willing to take. Today that reasoning seems hopelessly flawed, but again....the risk assumed was small. I don't like having a 5th rounder go to waste obviously, but whatever happens to Nicholson is of little concern. If drafting Nicholson was a mistake then make the best of it and use him as an example....because right now Kingwilly is absolutely correct about one very important factor. The wrong message has been sent.

kentjett
There are a lot of young athletes that get into trouble at a young age but end up being stars in the NFL. I believe it takes several years beyond the age of 23 to judge somebodies character. When it comes to linebackers it seems like the best ones have a wild side (killer instinct) but it takes time for them to learn how to tame that killer instinct. Some of the best players are freakin nuts. Lets see where these guys(A.J.,Henry) are in 3 years. There are several punks that have panned out. Ray Lewis got arrested for murder; Jamal Lewis sold drugs in college; Lawrence Taylor was arrested several times; just to name a few. MacD BengalFan
Most of you have keyed on the impact A.J. may have with the Bengals. The bigger issue is the fact he may have screwed up his life. If he is convicted of felony charges, he could potentially spend significant time in jail and not have the chance to make any professional roster. Including the CFL and AFL (Canadian and Arena Leagues for those who may not know what I am refering to). He had the chance to prove to have learned from his past mistake, but it appears he did not. Thus, he may have to pay his dept to society and possibly lose any chance of achieving his dream and playing for an NFL team.

I dare not spread cyber gossip all over a good thread! Back to the topic at hand! Nicholson looked to be a talent, but he was destined to be little more than depth as a Bengal. Odell is obviously the guy at middle linebacker, and we already have some passable options behind him (assuming they can stay healthy). I'd be much more concerned if someone expected to contribute early was in this situation, like Rucker.

HoTbOy
I can honestly say that I am not surprised. it was just a matter of time...you just get drafted why the hell do you need to break into someone house for $1700 worth of s**t...then you have this other a**hole who leaves a glove like he had the initails OJ and wants to snitch...Yeah these guys play good football, but enough is enough... Kazkal
I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.
LB51
Kaz, I agree with that in principle but we, as fans of this team, also have the right to look at the facts at hand and make an educated decision about what took place. This fella is no stranger to trouble, therefore, he is not going to be given the benefit of the doubt by the general public including myself. It's safe to say that he's earned that.On the other hand, if he is proven innocent, then I will be the first person to say..................MISTRIAL! GregCook
Doubtful this is a he said/ he said case. Must be more to it than just what the former player said. If there's truth to it, AJ is too dumb to sign. Since this isn't the first time AJ has had legal problems, I tend to believe its more likely there is a problem for him. But this does give the team leverage in any contract negotiations. If they do decide to sign him, they can load it with incentives and behavior clauses that minimize their exposure. As a 5th rounder its not much money anyway. Now then there is knuckle head (Henry) from last year looking at a trial this year or maybe copping a plea, now AJ, the Bengals aren't looking so smart with their drafts. What is it with these guys who make it to the show, then go stupid?
andybren
The bigger issue is the fact he may have screwed up his life. No, it's not. I don't sympathize with criminals. This isn't Nicholson's first brush with the law --- he has chosen a lifestyle that involves victimizing people. Our sympathies should be with them. Innocent until proven guilty? In a court of law, absolutely. In a court of public opinion? No way. We're talking about a large, physically strong man who is on the brink of signing a contract for more money than most of us will ever see. Conflict with former roommates over rent, etc.? Fine. Use your new-found wealth to hire a good civil attorney. Or perhaps you should go ahead and buy a new X-Box, AJ. I'm sure we could have taken up a collection to tide you over until you got your signing bonus. So this will be a wasted pick. Not the first or last time this happens. It just stings more since the writing was all over the wall. And the downfall involved voluntary behavior, not training camp ACL's and/or single car accidents. But at least he's not under contract. Its one of the cornerstones of our judicial system: "Innocent until proven guilty"True dat...such is the cornerstone of our judicial system...BUT you can still be guilty of bad character...THe threshold should not be whether or not someone is found guilty of a criminal offense. THe standard for a team like the bengals should be higher. This is why the "conduct detrimental to..." clause in in just about every professional athletes contract.
