Bengals/Steelers rank 3rd in NFL's top rivalries

Bad article. Plain and simple. It knocks Carson Palmer and the Bengals, making no mention of the fact that when "Pittsburgh beat the Bengals last year in the only game that mattered." Palmer only played 2 plays, and threw 1 ball for 66 yards. Yeah... nevermind that fact.

Anyway, he contradicts himself by saying "When I'm talking rivalries, I want teams that loathe each other; not simply games involving star players." And then he places Patriots/Colts as the top rivalry. I don't think these teams really hate each other at all. They just both happen to be good, and therefore play eachother in the playoffs a lot. That doesn't mean there's bad blood. Give me one Tom Brady or Peyton Manning quote where either of them say something bad about the other team? Bengals/Steelers have tons of these quotes... even from the coaches!

Dallas/Philly is a real rivalry, and has been so for a very long time (and the T.O. controversy will make it a bit more spicey)... but I still say Bengals/Steelers has the most bad blood for the upcoming season.

If you want to read this, and get al riled up about an unnecessary Bengal lashing... then click here. Stupid article

Hell, the Steelers/Bengals rivalry is second in my book to the battle for Ohio. I get more geeked up for the Bengals/Browns than I do for the Steelers.

The Steelers games are more important recently, but the Browns are on their way back to respectability.

Just another situation where the Steelers are overrated by the media hype, just look at 2 of the matchups involving the Pats. Just a few years ago they were everyones whipping boy, now they have 2 of the biggest rivalries, come on!

Rivalries come from personnel experience, that is why OSU/Mich is my favorite college game, when some would say USC/UCLA or Georgia/Auburn or Florida/TENN, it all depends on your own history.

derek I have to agree that this was a stupid article.

Are you kidding me? The Bengals and the Steelers the top rivalry?

The Browns and Steelers should definitely be on that list.

I mean, the Bengals and the Browns are a bigger rivalry then that, come on now..

It's a question of now versus history. Frankly, I'd say the Steelers are involved either way.

The most heated rivalry right NOW has to be the Steelers and Bengals... That's no homer statement.

The best rivalry through the history of this league would probably be Steelers and Browns.

It all really depends. As much as I've always hated the Browns, it diminished somewhat when the original browns moved to Cleveland. I just cant get myself to hate the Browns as much anymore. pittsburgh, however. For those who love to hate one particular team, Pittsburgh is the gift that keeps on giving. Its like Christmas every day. This is why I think that Pittsburgh-Cincy is THE AFC north rivalry. Cleveland is still new (and they suck), and Baltimore - whille being the original Brownies, and having Ray lewis - is in my mind a different team, because they're out of Ohio (and they suck). Thats my skewed logic, and I'm sticking to it.

That being said, I'm surprised that Washington-Dallas isnt on here. I know Dallas hasnt been good for a while, but that is about to change. i have friends who are Cowboy fans who have hated the Redskins since they came out of the womb. And vice versa.

I have been a fan for the lifetime of our franchise. I, like many old-timers have hated the Browns and their legion of boorish, obnoxious, spoiled children fans.

The steelers and their child-like fans have recently emerged to the fore. With Kimo being the most hated man in Bengal Nation history and my having witnessed the incredibly moronic behaviour of the dark side of the steeler fan base, my hatred for them is boiling.

Looking at this objectively, however, I think the biggest rivalry in the league would be: Philadelphia and Dallas.

Talk about hatred.

Why don't you ask the Steeler players who they hate more? Bengals or Browns. Historically, you're right, because the Browns have been around longer... but right now, there is no comparison. Bengals/Steelers is much more heated. Hell... Ravens/Steelers is more heated than Browns/Steelers.

You can't be serious.. Browns and Steeler fans hate eachother with a PASSION. I have been raised to despise that city and team, and well, I do.

No matter how bad one of the teams is at the time, the Browns and Steelers game is still always one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL.

Go ahead, ask any Steelers or Brown's fan, and see what they say.

Just because you have one year where you aren't absolutely terrible doesn't make a rivalry, and the hatred that I have and have always had for the Steelers is most likely way more than you will ever know, along with every other Brown's fan.

Judge proved he knows nothing about rivalries that are not a flash in the pan by totally leaving Chicago-Green Bay off the list. This rivalry has been fierce since the Bears and Packers started playing each other back in the 30s. We are talking about two teams that have played each other over 200 times, and who, no matter how bad one team is, ALWAYS show up to play.

I think people have hit on the better ones. What makes for a good rivalry is time. The divisions that have been largely kept intact, not surprisingly, have the best ones. NFC North, AFC North, NFC East, and AFC West are the best across the board, and these are the divisions that largely haven't been messed with. You can't really expect the Colts, Titans, Texans, and Jags to hate each other, for example, in that AFC South hodgepodge.

It's not a rivalry if two teams just happen to be good at the same time, either. 5-10 years ago, Titans/Jaguars sure seemed like a good one, but who cares now? A rivalry is a game you care about even if both your teams suck.

Of course, you can get a rivalry going faster by talking smack. On that note, enjoy your Super Bowl, Steeler fans - you'll need it, because Pittsburgh women are still fat and hideous nags. ;)

OKAY! I think everyone needs to re-read the article!

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9462572?rivalry

This is the jist of what he is saying:

"When I'm talking rivalries, I want teams that loathe each other; not simply games involving star players. And I want something at stake -- like a division title or a playoff spot. Which means I want a Big Game.

That eliminates something like, say, Oakland-Kansas City. Or Miami and the New York Jets. Or Green Bay-Chicago. Hey, I love watching Brett Favre too, but not when he's throwing 29 interceptions and chasing defensive backs.

No, I want teams that are competitive and teams that play for something other than draft positions. I want teams like ... well, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. Which is why Palmer got me thinking of what rivalries I anticipate most this season. "

He praises CP and the Bengals (and the rivalry with the squealers). No it is not the glowing drool that we want to see and hear (well, read) about our beloved Bengals, but we have to start somewhere and I for one will take the volume of and anticipated attention that we are getting IN MAY! Not even after we were 4-0 or 6-0 in 1988 was the expectation this palpable!

Besides, the national poll vote says that we are just (about) as anticipated as Colts-Pats)

... so WHO DEY!

:D

colts/pats is always the best game of the year.....

I agree that it's a great game, but I'm not sure it's the best (granted, this is all a matter of opinion). Neither the Colts nor the Patriots seem have the fiery personalities that makes a rivalry great. Both teams handle each other with a lot of class, and do so quietly. Dungy and Belichick never seem to pay rivalry questions any attention.

With other current rivalries, like Cincy/Pittsburgh or Dallas/Washington, there seems to be more energy and fire among players before the games. I get more of a college football vibe from these rivalries than I do from Colts/Pats.

All I know is I have a buddy that is a squeelers fan. Whenever I go to his house we are always arguing about Pitt and Cincy. He has a room decarated in steelers sh*t. I tell him he better close the door to that room or I'm not coming over. That's how much I hate that team. I can't even stand looking at the color yellow without vomiting.

I would have to agree with him on this. Now this is sort of a bias opinion since I am an Eagles fan! But I would rank the Bengal/Steeler rivalry right up there on my list too.

Actually, I think someone on ESPN Radio did a list of the top 10 or 20 team rivalries in sports. I will try to find it. Couldn't find that but found some others.

Found them...
