johngateswhiteley
hi, from texas and i went to Texas A&M so i got to see lots of mcneal and my family also has season tickets. i just signed onto this board to talk about this guy...big fan. was curious what some here thought of him and his future with the bengals. a few thoughts from myself:1. very angry he got drafted by the bengals as he will never get a chance at qb b/c of palmer. before anyone reads too into that, i went to USC as well and go to see palmer play quite a bit; he's great2. mcneal never ran the type of offense or had the personel @ A&M to flourish3. mcneal, imo, would be a better qb at the nfl level than wr...he just needs a chance4. his decision making abilities, arm-strength, speed, and intelligence are all better than vince young's yet everyone wants to ride young's nuts5. mcneal was tons better than young in his junior year, but when you lose your two best receivers to the draft and then EVERY receiver before and early on in the season due to injury, who the hell are you going to throw too?6. many of mcneal's picks his senior year were on tipped balls or b/c of crappy routes by receivers whom had never played before. go back and look at his junior year to see how many picks he had then......hopefully, mcneal will work his way up the depth charts and get traded or sign somewhere else in the next few years so he can play qb
Bengalbob
Sorry, but I have to burst your bubble. It's clear that Reggie has conceeded that he'll need to play WR to get playing time at the next level. The Bengals cleared this with him before and during the draft. At this point there is no way he'll be a QB unless the Bengals release him this pre-season and Reggie is able to get on with another team as a back-up QB. That said, the Bengals are not going to release him. I think he's shown enough in the first mini camp to give the Bengals staff an idea that the WR project may work out.My recommendation is to embrace this new role he has and hope he gets the PT to show off his stuff. But, getting playing time at WR on this team is another issue all together. Getting in front of Chad Johnson, TJ Housh., Chris Henry, and Tab Perry on the depth charts may be as difficult as getting ahead of Carson Palmer. The_Next_Big_Thing
McNeal was lucky to get into the NFL at all. Of course, Vince Young is a bust in the making, so the same could be said for him. McNeil has great speed, and he can throw the ball. However, he has the best situation out there when he gets the chance to catch passes from a guy like Carson Palmer. His athleticism will be fully realized and he will, in the next few years become a super star at wide receiver. Hue Jackson will make the best of his abilities. He has turned a 7th rounder named TJ into a stud. He can turn Reggie McNeal into Reggie Wayne!
Section 310
I like the idea of having a guy like McNeal who can be a special teams stud, a 4th or 5th wideout and an emergency qb. I don't understand why teams keep 3 qb's. If Palmer were to go down again for any extended period of time, you know Cincinnati is going to grab a veteran. The team will never be turned over to any third stringer on the roster...so why carry a #3?

Actually, he's in a great situation with superior position coaches (Jackson & Zampese), where he can catch up with the game. Maybe he catches on with a club as a #2 in 2009 or 2010. kingwilly
Welcome to the board...here is my $.02.First, reggie is a superior athlete. he has so many skills, that it mauy actually hold him back. Jack of all trades, master of none, kind of thing. As a QB, he would get his best shot on another team, in a few years...you are right. I think he has NFL QB skills so you never know.As a WR, he could do quite well. Ranel-El took time to move up...running back kicks first...making progress every year. RM could go the same route. He needs to make the team first, though. As a KR/ST player...this is where he makes the team for the bengals...versatility is everything. He HAS to be better than Keiwan running back punts, and with Tab maybe getting more looks on O (pending Cheech's trial outcome) he coud do well to make the team doing returns. Other options could be rolling him on some nickel and dime situations...back in a zone, he can run with anyone in the NFL...coach him up.RM's future as an NFL qb is curently stalled out. not to say it can't happen but if it were not for his 4.35 spped and athletitcism, he probaby would not ahve been drafted (right or wrong). Some of his futre depends on his success changing positions...there have been several collge QB's, successful guys, who won't cut it at QB..Crouch, Dantzler, Frazier, it is a long list...but none of them can run like reggie. Without a number 3, they would've been direct snapping to the running back the rest of the game! I know it's one in a million, but that third QB usually isn't much of a slary problem anyways! So maybe he can be our 4th!

Yes, I think that the second stringers should get the start in the playoffs. This will show the rest of the NFL just how deep the talent level is on the Mighty Bengals. bengalskyspy
Has anybody whatched the Day 1 OTA video? The one thing that really stood out for me was the cone drill with the WR's---- Chad is simply in another league versus all others, KWash looked pretty good, and Reggie McNeal freakin' aweful! He has such a long way to go, I really wonder if he can stick with this team.
andybren
[i think the other reason teams carry a third is for practices. You need the #1 and #2 working with the starting O all week and the #3 to run the scout O.It's also good to be developing talent. Remember that Carson started as the #3 QB. If Kitna went down in Week 1, it would have been Shane Matthews taking snaps. I'm no guru of QB talent, but there's gotta be a reason why Vince Young went top of the 1st round and McNeal went bottom of the 5th. As a receiver. There are many great college QB's that never make it in the NFL. My personal favorite was Marvin Graves, whom I watched start 4 straight years at my alma mater. Great arm, great mobility, great leadership. He ended up playing in the CFL. Completely overshadowed by his successor, Donovan McNabb.McNeal's best chance at the NFL is as a receiver/returner. And if he comes through and proves all the doubters wrong, he'll have every opportunity to get reps at QB. If he's truly as gifted as his followers believe, than a team would have to be stupid and self-destructive not to give him his chance. But it's going to be one step at a time.
