UofLnMU Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/news/story?id=2429358It looks like Reggie Bush is petitioning to wear #5 in the NFL. Edgerrin James tried that before when he entered the league. I certainly don't have any problem with that sort of thing, but this opens up a huge can of worms, eh? What happens when Mario Williams wants to wear his #9--or hell, #1 for that matter? Gugh. Quote
Stripes Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 I can't fault Bush for trying, but I hope the NFL says no to this. The number system is uniform throughout the league for a reason. After they gave in to the receivers wanting 10-20, they will end up getting closer to a "pick your own number" kind of deal if Bush gets his way. Quote
jjakq27 Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 A big part of the whole numbering thing is that it's suppossed to help the refs with issues like eligible receivers and proper offensive line formations. Having a low number is probably not going to affect this situation, but what happens when a guard or a DE wants a number that is below 20? They've got to draw the line somewhere. I would be surprised if he wins. His jersey will sell whether it has 5 or 35 on it so the NFL probably doesn't care in what he wants. Quote
ChadJohnson-85 Posted May 2, 2006 Report Posted May 2, 2006 Mcneal might try to have his jersey number 1#? Quote
BigBenBlows Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 I for one really could care less. Keyswawn wears 19, Pot Henry wears 15. Its not really that big of a deal. Quote
ChadJohnson-85 Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 he's a qb i think that is okMarvin Lewis wanted him to be a WR for trick play's. Quote
GROIIIDayton Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 chad johnson-85 did you come up with that all by yourself??...lol Quote

jditty47 Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 yep didnt get it. good, make him stay with what has worked for them...and i agree with the reasoning. Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 he's a qb i think that is okMcNeal is NOT a QB. Therefore, it is not ok. He's a WR. Quote
Edogger Posted May 25, 2006 Report Posted May 25, 2006 I am glad to hear the NFL shot down Bush's petition to wear #5. The NFL should stick to their guns and not allow any exceptions to the rules and keep the numbers based on position. I disagree with the fines they hand out and strict dress code but the numbers are a good thing. Maybe the NCAA should start incorporating this into their plans that way there is no complaints when they make to the big time! Quote

With all the retired numbers and whatnot, it makes sense as long as there are simple guidelines. For instance:Quarterbacks may wear any number between 1-19.Any other skill position player on offense or defense may wear any number between 1-49 with receivers and tight ends also being able to wear 80-89. Offensive and defensive linemen may wear any number between 50-79 and 90-99.Linebackers may wear any number between 40-59 and 80-99.Kicker and punters may wear any number between 1-19.It would really be that simple. But I'm sure you would always have "that guy" to fight the system and get their way. Quote
