I don't think Dunn is viewed highly by anyone outside of Cincinnati. He's not overrated, but he is CERTAINLY not underrated either.

page 2 rated him as the 18 best player in the majors, 2 above derek jeter.

Wow. Well I would certainly hope nobody else actually agrees with that!

I'd argue that the most important stat is batting average with runners in scoring position. Dunn's is crap.

You'd think RISP average is an indicative stat that proves a players (or team's) worth but you'd be wrong. For example, Dunn grounded out to first yet a run scored in the process. This doesnt show up anywhere but it is productive regardless if his avg is low in the situation. He also has 2 sac flies this year already.

For example, the Reds team RISP average is .249 (21st) but lead the league with runs (97). This teams problems arent related to Dunn. Its all having to do with pitching that resembles something my 1 week old baby puts in her diaper.

id like to add this nugget i found on RedsZone:

Ichiro Suzuki and Adam Dunn both step up to the plate 650 times. Ichiro gets 200 hits and 50 walks while Dunn gets 170 hits and 120 walks. Neither gets hit by a pitch and for the sake of this argument, neither have a sacrifice fly either. Since most people readily recognize batting average, let’s look at them – Ichiro is hitting .308, while Dunn is hitting .257. Obviously, Ichiro’s average looks a lot better. But, now let’s check their OBP. Ichiro has a .357 OBP and therefore a 35.7% chance of reaching base safely and potentially scoring a run. Dunn has a .376 OBP and therefore a 37.6% chance of reaching base safely and potentially scoring a run. That’s a significant increase in percentage for Dunn when you add in the walks.

Then add that Dunn had over 77 Extra base Hits last year, 29 more than Ichiro

Dunn's RISP avg might not be the greatest but overall, the dude gets it done. Even when he is slumping he manages to be productive with his walks

All good points, Smith.

I'd still say that I'd certainly prefer an Ichiro single to a Dunn walk. Dunn does indeed get himself in position to score runs, but when he is the 3rd or 4th guy in the order, I want him to be the guy driving in runs.

That is a red herring. THe argument is that Dunn is more productive than Ichiro. I know Ichiro is faster but Ichiro on the bench isnt as productive as Dunn is on base as a result of a BB.

I'd agree that Dunn is more productive overall than Ichiro, but I don't think that's the greatest comparison. Ichiro is a leadoff guy, while Dunn is a cleanup hitter. When compared to other cleanup hitters out there, like Paul Konerko, Carlos Lee, or Andruw Jones... Dunn's numbers don't quite stack up as well in a complete sense. His on base percentage is good, no question... But we need that out of Freel and Lopez, not Dunn, in my opinion.
