Chad gets an extension !!!

Why would Drew attempt to distance himself from the TO affair? His client may be a jerk, but Drew got him the deal nobody thought he'd get.

Uhhh...because Drew has more clients than T.O....and maybe in order to keep them he might want to show he can do a deal for a top player without butting heads with management? This deal is a big feather in Rosenhaus' cap. A little Bengals benefit from the whole T.O. mess, I think.

The Bengals are doing things that I thought would never happen with this team...I mean you can't help but notice how bad MBrown wants to win a championship and I for one am a happy camper...JJohnson highest paid FB, BWilliams extended,RJohnson and TJ signed and with CJohnson85 signing, we are drafting, developing and keeping our players...don't let them go be pro bowlers for another team after you coached them up...OH  i forgot about CPalmer being extended man these are GOOD times right now...we even have MLewis for another 4 or 5 years...now if we can get JWilliams fron VTech...

So lets say - lets just say - that the Bengals will sign only one more lineman this year, who would it be? My money is on Levi. Braham is ready to retire, Willie will command a ton of well-deserved greenbacks, and Steinbach - well, he's great, but he's a guard, and I dont see the Bengals over-paying like Seattle did.

Braham may retire, but the real key is that there's no push to extend him. I think each of his last three contracts were signed after he had tested free agency, and he's not getting more attractive to other teams with each passing year. If he wants to continue playing there's a strong possibility that the Bengals can sign him after taking care of other needs in free agency next year.

Big Willie has probably sealed his own fate by previously spurning multiple attempts to extend his deal. If he wants to chase the last available dollar he'll probably have to move on, but that's always been his choice. I agree it would be a shame if he didn't stick around long enough to end his career in Cincy now that the team has turned it around.

Last, I think the Bengals will approach both Levi and Steinbach, and let the ease of negotiations dictate who gets the most serious push. If both players stonewall I'd turn to Justin Smith while planning to use the tag on Levi.

I agree....i'm liking these recent logical opinions around here.

We have plenty to rsign levi and Bach. Willie is gone im telling you Stacey Andrews is cheaper and younger. J Smith might be on the way out too. OF course after this year. By the way Steinbach is better than levi. Bach is way to valuable.

I actually agree with Spain on this. Perhaps a bit of the smoke around his head drifted all the way back to Cincy. I think Willie will play this year, and either chose to take less money for a Super Bowl run or retire. I don't see him signing a big contract extension. I don't see us putting a bunch of money down for Justin Smith either. I think we will try to get someone else to do the job over the next two drafts.

As for Steinbach and Jones, both are extremely valuable. Both are young. Both must be resigned.

PS: Please don't think I'm bashing Willie. He is an exceptional talent. However, the money he COULD demand is too much for someone of his years, and I think between Kooistra and Stacey the Dancing Bear, we have a replacement.

I love master of the obvious statements !!! I make them from time to time as well...

Rosenhaus won't distance himself from T.O. for one good reason... T.O. makes him a sh*t load of cash.

Why would he leave that ???

Back on topic, did I say Chad is man ??:bow::bow:

This signing of Chad is just another example of the Bengals doing things the right way since Marvin got here. As Hair made mention of, this was all done quietly without the media. Also, the Bengals take care of one of their star playesr without him having to threaten to hold out even once (see Hines Ward last year)

But possibly the best thing about this contract is the way it is structured. You have to look no further than the horrible cap shape that the Titans, the Jets and the Raiders are in every year. Why is this? They backload contracts.

The Bengals don't play these stupid games, and will get to keep their players around for the same basic price every year. Now when Chad gets a little older, they don't have to lock him out of the locker room (ala Steve McNair) because his phony money is too ridiculous to even consider. The contract is steady... and won't result in huge cap problems in the future that cause us to have to cut every star player that ever made us successful (The Titans for example have been forced to cut Eddie George, Jevon Kearse, Derrick Mason, and now Steve McNair in consecutive years... I'm glad we're smart enough to learn from their mistakes).

Well, maybe he always tried to sign his guys... but it always made it in the media because guys didn't want to re-sign here.

The main thing I was pointing out though is that Marvin's presence has changed the kinds of contracts we offer as well... the kinds that turns us into a dynasty... not a one-year wonder.

I didn't say he'd drop T.O., just that after the whole Philly fiasco, Rosenhaus had a vested interest in showing he didn't need to stir up a war with management to get his clients paid. And that dove-tailed neatly with the desires of Bengals management and, very likely, Chad himself.

The Bengals like to do their deals exactly like this, not just low-profile but no-profile, at least until the contract is signed. And with the infamous locker room incident still fresh in people's minds, Chad didn't have any use for a high-profile war over money. In short, everyone had an interest in dooing this deal in the manner in which it was done, and the result was a win all around. The team gets Chad long-term, Chad gets paid, the front office gets a reasonable-money deal, and Rosenhaus comes out of it looking like the very soul of reason and professionalism.

That's fair, but Rosenhaus hasn't attempted to distance himself from the TO fiasco one bit. In fact, during the recent press conference in Dallas we all witnessed him bragging about the size of the contract, how talk of no interest in TO was unfounded, and how the Philly fiasco wasn't the fault of his client, but instead...the responsibility of an Eagle team that refused to rework a substandard contract.

In short, it was all one big..."I told ya' so!"

I'm betting that the whole fiasco, including the end results, remains a treasured part of the Rosenhaus sales pitch to potential clients.

I wouldn't go that far, after all, it was Chad Johnson who not that long ago (during last season when all this talk started) came out and reminded Rosenhaus that he worked for Chad, and not the other way around. He also told Drew that he would not be holding out, but expected a quiet deal to be done to get him what he deserved without involving a holdout. Then when Chad got his, he once again stated that he expected a similar extension, quiet and done without drama.

Rosenhaus advised him to hold out last season, remember?
