Trade for Dontrell

We all know that the Reds still lack another true starter that can carry the team into the playoffs. Dontrell Willis is on a bad team that has the worst payroll in the league with an owner trying to manipulate the city into a new stadium. He has let all of his better players go for next to nothing and has shown he doesn't care about the product he places on the field. They currently have 11 rookies on the roster and have been know to start 6 of them in a game. I would bet that the Reds could get Dontrell for a couple of single A prospects only. The new Reds owner has stated he would do whatever it takes to put a winner in Cincy and I think Dontrell would satisfy that. He has been a proven winner, eats up innings and has playoff experiance. If nothing else, aquiring Dontrell will make the rest of league and take notice. It would send shock waves that throughout that would reverate into the American League. Dontrell would make the Reds a contender now instead of having to wait out the next couple of years. :):):)

I'd love to have Dontrell, but if the Reds thought that were possible I bet they'd have already been all over it. Florida's owner has kept a small measure of the team intact, including Willis and Miguel Cabrera. I doubt he would let either of them go for little.

Ok, sweeten the pot with Edwin Encarcion. Then the Marlins would have a major league player that is leading in a catagory.

Is that errors?

Nah, I like Edwin! He's going to be a solid 3rd basemen. He certainly won't be as dominant as Dontrell Willis, but I doubt it makes a difference either way from the Marlin's perspective.

I agree with TDB here as well. While I would LOVE to have Dontrell, I just can't see this happening. If the Marlins "DO" want to move, they can't sell a bigger turd than they already have and I think they'll hold on to some talent...

By the way, who's this Dontrell guy anyway ???

Just kidding !!! ;)

WHODEY !!!

I have to partly disagree with both of you. If the new Reds owner is serious about doing what it takes for the Reds to be a winner now, he will find a way to get it done. I also think that Wayne (the trash man turned car dealer) would let Dontrell go because he either gets a new stadium or they move to Las Vegas. He has tried to sell the once before and it fell through, now he is trying a different tactic to get what he wants and that is making the team so less attractive to the fans (they still have some, yes?) that they might get 2,000 to attend a game. If the Reds have to give up some of our hitting to get Dontrell, well they have already shown they are willing to do that. I truly think that Wayne (the trash guy) would do whatever it takes to get what he wants and that would include trading the only two true Major Leaguers that are currently on his roster.

In any event, I'd love to have Dontrell here. I won't frown on the Reds ownership if they don't pursue him, simply because I think they would have were he as cheap as you might think.

It's sad to see what happened to the Marlins though. They won two the World Series just a few years back, and now they are trying desperately just to escape Miami.

Make the trade now. See ya Austie.

Right now the Reds are not in a position to trade any of their outfielders, as they no longer have the logjam out there. Also, Edwin wouldn't be tradeable either because then all you're left with is old Rich Aurilia playing third.

I would love to get Dontrelle in a trade, but only if it involved a couple of minor leaguers.

Also, does anyone know what the chances are of the Reds signing Casey this offseason? He IS a free agent, and I think it would be hilarious if the Reds re-signed him and basically the Pirates gave away Dave Williams.

Freel is a more than adequate OF in the short run and an ace Starting pitcher would mean the Reds would not have to score 7-8 runs in most games to win.

Williams is throwing today, lets see if he was even worth acquiring before we fantasize about having him and Casey next season.

One thing that has been evident so far this season is that Hatteberg has not been hitting as well as a 1B in Cinci should.

That's what I was saying, I didn't expect Dave Williams to be any good. I think he had a tough start today (everything was up), but I hope he gets better. It would just be funny to sign Casey, who would give the Reds a real 1B again, AND leave the Pirates with nothing.

I heard on ESPN today their owner wasnt going to trade these two players...

I believe that both players will be gone by the trade deadline. There is no way these players will be with the Marlins because of the impact they can have with a playoff contender. I think when it gets closer, Jeffery Lorie (sorry, I thought Wayne was still owner) will send these two packing because of the possible move to San Antonio or Las Vegas. The low payroll will make them attractive to potential suiters plus Miami doesn't even support them and the city government won't help build a new stadium. The dumping of Dontrell's pay check will make the teams over payroll under 10 million dollars!!! Tell me that some potential buyer wouldn't want that?

I think what is going to come out of the whole Florida situation is a possible, but unlikely move, and a bottom limit to payrolls that will prevent teams like the Marlins from building a winner and then getting rid of everyone. Seriously, they have 6 Triple-A calibur players in their lineup. That's absurd.

Speaking of Dontrell and the Marlins...

The Reds just came back from an 8-4 deficit in the 6th to win 9-8. They were on the verge of losing a series at home to the worst team in the NL, but they escaped. Lord our pitching sucks...

And this is why I think the Reds need to make a move on Dontrell, and do it soon. Aaron had another bad outing lasting only 4 innings, giving up 5 runs and 3 homers. Dontrell faired a little better going 6 innings but giving up 4 run and NO homeruns. The Reds need starting pitching to help eat up innings. If the Reds had another good starter which will provide some relief to the bullpen, then the Reds stand a much better chance of competing for and getting into the playoffs. And Dontrell can provide that kind of relief. Someone in the Reds front office has to be seeing this thread. Yes?

I don't think they need to read this thread to realize that Dontrell Willis would be a great upgrade to the rotation. That much is obvious. The question lies in whether or not Florida will be willing to part with him for little, and I highly doubt that. They will keep their best two players around as real trade bait rather than throwing them away for pennies as they did with Mike Lowell and rest of the players they dumped.
