combatbengal
OK, the new schedule is out and it's a tough one for us. If Palmer isn't ready to play right away we maybe in trouble. Our new and improved Def is going to have to step up to the plate and shut down some people so we can get some wins. Palmer said that he hasn't thrown a ball since he went down. I hope he starts throwing soon to get that arm strength back. Even if he has to sit on his but and throw balls to build up the strength. Shoot I'm not as active as I was when I was a kid and when I go and throw the football with me kids I feel like I threw my arm out! Stripes
Indeed, the defense will make or break us (as well as whatever replacement quarterback we put on the field) if Carson cannot play. Frankly, even given the improvements this offseason and those we will make in the draft, I am not optimistic. The new defense will take some time to get rolling to its maximum potential, just as Carson will need time to heal up.
bengalboomer7
Then why are we talking about first round tight ends! This is just another reason why I wanna load up on D in the draft. I think Jamie Martin(Hell, maybe even Touchdown Tommy ) can easliy put up 21 point with our offense. Now get a D that won't give up so much. I firmyl planted on going D(not, Lavar either) up to the whole first day of the draft. It's a deep draft especially rounds 2-4 for some quality defensive players. Whur CHad At?
I agree w/ ya BB that is what we need to do, but if Pope is there, or even a good OT, I think Marvin will take them. We should focus on D, but you know Marvin....

Having that one extra weapon over the middle could be very important. I do want to spend the majority of the draft on defense of course, but I also think we have the freedom to go either way in the first round. There's going to be a solid TE like David Thomas or Klopfenstein in 3 and 4. We don't need anything amazing, just someone who can hold down the middle of the field and hold on to the ball unlike that schmuck TE we let go. The_Next_Big_Thing
The entire reason people are talking tight end on day 1 is because if we combined all the skills of all our tight ends into one, we'd have a good long snapper left and a below average tight end. However, the draft is very deep in tight ends, and I'd like to see us grab Thomas on day 2 personally. derekshank
For you guys that are arguing for a day 1 TE saying that we need him to help the back-up QB until Carson gets back... Please understand that a rookie TE won't make much of an impact in the first 4 games of the Season. Heath Miller, last year's first TE taken... which would be an equivalent of our 1st round pick only started 2 of the first 4 games last year, and caught a total of 52 yards in those 4 games. He wasn't making a big impact on the team until much later in the season. If we want a good rookie TE... don't make this about the back-up QB. Make it about having another weapon later in the season for Palmer to throw to... because it is not likely that a rookie TE will help us win games early in the season without Palmer. My opinion is that all 3 first day picks should be on defense. A 3rd round defense pick would be something more valuable. That player could be starting by the end of the year, or at least provide much needed depth... whether it be on the D-line, or in the secondary. We got Landon Johnson with the dead last pick in the 3rd round two years ago, so we could definetly get another good defensive sleeper in that round, rather than burn it on a TE pick when there is still a good under-rated TE available. We use our TE pretty much as a 6th lineman anyway... So we could get a good blocking TE, with decent receiving ability either in FA for cheap, or in the 2nd day of the draft. That TE could be used to help Rudi with the running game (which would help the back-up QB)... as well as provide another decent receiver for short and mid-yardage gains. The only thing a player like that would lack is the Tony Gonzalez, Antonia Gates big play ability... and we have plenty of that from Chad, Housh, Henry and Chris Perry. We don't need to get a big-play TE, when our offense already has so many of those kinds of weapons. What we need is another short yardage 1st down threat. The main difference between a day 2 TE, and a day 1 TE in this draft will be that big play ability... so I think it just makes more sense to wait. Reggie Kelly will probably be the starter the first few weeks of the season regardless of who we pick. So in my opinion, the best chance we have of winning a few of those first 4 games (if we don't have Palmer) is by drafting defense early and often. ArmyBengal
I was thinking this morning while I was shaving (that's when I think best) and came up with this little bit..."IF" we are truly looking for TE on the 1st day, then I see us doing one of two things...#1. Trading down from #24 to pick up another day one pick#2. Trading up for another pick in the 3rdThis would give us 4 day one picks, enabling us to get the TE we covet and then take 3 defensive picks on day one. You pick the positions, but I'm thinking CB, DE, Safety and then a DT in the 4th. I'd be more than happy with that scenario...WHODEY !!! derekshank
Yeah... or we could do what we did a couple years ago, and trade down a few picks and get a player from another team, the way we got Deltha. That would require a team that has a player they no longer want for one reason or another... but it would certainly be something I wouldn't mind us trying again.
