Saints Gandy traded to Falcons for Scott

On the surface, not much of a big deal -- Saints trade their ancient starting left tackle for a halfway decent backup safety. But this looks like the Saints may have already settled on drafting D'Brick whether at #2 or traded down a couple few spots. Don't really see Jammal Brown shifting to the other side and there's no backup who should be expected to start at LT.

The Jets would be out in front for it, no doubt. But it would be costly based on the draft trade value chart if all the picks swapped were from this year:

Jets 1st round pick at #29, 3rd round comp pick at #97 and either their 5th at #138 or 7th at #195.

Jets are going to have to like somebody an awful lot to give up that much.

Saints still could get tempted by Mario Williams if they trade down, but somebody's got to play LT for them. If they really think Jammal Brown can convert, Mario could still be a Saint.

Seems a lot of people around here think it'd be a bad idea for them to take Mario, considering the young talent that they already have at defensive end. I don't think it really matters, because either way they end up with a player that will more than likely make a significant impact on his side of the ball.

The Saints really couldn't lose either way. There's been NFLN talk about the Saints being near the bottom of the barrell on scoring defense and IIRC Charles Grant is playing the last year of his contract with a year after this already voided.

But still hard to believe the Saints would throw Brees to the dogs. They have to get a center too and probably a guard/center in addition to an O tackle.

Now I expect the Saints to work on getting a trade done to move down to #4 and let the Jets take Leinart with #2. I doubt Tennessee takes D'Brick.

Why wouldn't they? Especially if they miss out on their man, Leinart?

Who else would they take?

I've been one saying the Saints won't take super Mario with the first pick due to the 2 first round DE's they already have and are working contracts with already to stay. Next, I think the Saints got the better of this deal seeing as how they got a 3rd year safety drafted in the 2nd round and a late round pick next year for a 35 year old OL with no more than another year or two at best left in him.

I look for the Saints to trade down, but I'll go out on a limb and say they take A.J. Hawk instead of D'Brick. Their defense is horrible and have a crappy LB corp. With the picks they will get, there are more than enough OL to be able to take in this draft. I may be way off here, but I think getting rid of Gandy and moving J. Brown over isn't to make room for D'Brick. Not to mention they drafted Stichcomb in the 2nd round a couple years back. Anyway, just looking at it from another perspective...

I can't remember, but I thought you couldn't trade your comp picks you receive in the draft...

WHODEY !!!

I suppose they could go that route, who knows? I'm thinking they'll go after a quarterback whether it ends up being Leinart or not... probably Cutler. They could trade down to the lower top ten as well, with maybe the Lions or Cardinals and go after Vince Young there. All speculation of course.

Army, you're on to something.

The Saints do need LB help, and I wouldn't be TOTALLY suprised to see Hawk land there, but the conventional thought is that this draft class is loaded with OLB's, so I'm guessing they take 'D'Brick Wall Brickashaw'

to protect Brees, then make a run at LB early in the 2nd round.

They will trade their pick to the Jets....and they will take Super Mario at #4. J.Brown and DBrick could be a pretty dominate force togeter

I'm still waiting on someone to explain to me why the Saints would take Mario when they have two stud 1st round DE's already, but have NO linebacking corps ??? They also have a crappy o-line, not to mention they lost Bentley to the Browns... Oh well, everyone has an opinon !!!

WHODEY !!!

Count Pete Prisco among those who think the Saints will target Hawk.

All the teams with top 10 picks have to be eyeballing Hawk because there is no other player in this draft who is more field ready than him.

The Saints got lots of holes on both sides of the ball. But besides QB and backups at TE, WR and RB, the only positions they've really addressed through free agency have been LB and S. They signed Scott Fujita at SSLB but he could also play the middle. They re-signed their backup SSLB James Allen who also has started there. They signed Anthony Simmons to compete at WSLB with Coby Bockwoldt but Simmons hasn't been able to stay on the field for the last 5 years. Courtney Watson started at MLB but lost the job midway through the season before he ended up on IR with knee damage that required surgery. Their starting MLB for the last half of the season Ronald McKinnon remains an unsigned free agent and an old vet at that. But they also drafted a decent MLB prospect in Alfred Fincher in Round 3 of last year's draft.

No question Hawk would start if the Saints drafted him whether MLB or weakside, but their biggest gash in the offseason has been on the O-line where they lost 3 starters. They've got 2 serviceable backups who could swing C,G or RT in Jamar Nesbit and Jermane Mayberry but unless Jammal Brown can convince Mickey Loomis that he can ably protect his new franchise QB at LT, D'Brick should be their priority.

Whether or not the Jets would be willing to trade up at a steep cost remains to be seen. The Jets would have to like somebody an awful lot to fork over what it will take to move up the 2 spots. They'll draft a QB this year, but signing Patrick Ramsey and redoing Pennington has made it less critical for them to take a QB at #4. The other holes the Jets got should make it easier for them to sit back and wait to see who falls plus keep their #29 for a player who can play right away where they need it.

If the Saints did take Hawk, it would be interesting to see how Rudi would run against him. Could JJ clean out Hawk isolated on him for a lead block in a gap? Or would Reggie Kelly at fullback be the right call there?

Hawk is going to make teams adjust to him in a lot of ways, I think, right away.
