Bengals War room and on the clock on SC tonight.

I watched it. They talked more about the current Bengals than possible draft choices. They were very complimentary of the last couple of Bengal drafts. They did not think much of the current D secondary. They thought it was time for the Defensive guru ML to take care of the defense and bring it up to the level of the offense. They were VERY high on Allen and Whitner. Kiper gave Jimmy Williams to the Bengals because that is what he has on his latest Insider Mock Draft. I thought it would mention more draft possibilities. I thought it could have been more informative.

Yep, I agree, pretty bland and boring... Then again, anytime I hear talk of the Bengals, I just get all excited !!! Seeing the film of Carson, Chad, Odell, and others got me all fired up for the season to begin !!!

WHODEY !!!

I wish I could have seen it! I haven`t seen an American ESPN sportscenter since I arrived in Japan last September 30th. But based on your all`s assessment, I wonder what happened to the many shouters of Mercedes Lewis or Leonard Pope? Personally, I love the Sam Adams signing and hope that the Bengals pull a Detroit Lions (2005) and draft another big talent on the line. Pun intended. A run on the d-line instead of WRs as Millen`s Lions made. I think Kiper is missing the obvious in a deep draft of secondary players and should have predicted either a TE or another DT to go with Adams. Personally, Gabe Watson, Claude Wroten, or Buntley (but he is a bit small and a remember the over-hyped Reinard Wilson out of FSU) is my dream. A man can dream, can`t he? The Bengals will probably pull a S or CB in the 2nd or 3rd. James isn`t that old.

As i said i can see a Mercedes pulling into Cincinnati in the first

WHY? He'll be available in the second, as will Klopfersteinhead & the Dirty Byrd in the 3rd, and Day and a host of others in the 4th.

If we can't land a premium DB worth millions in the 1st, Marvin & Company will grab the best lineman available (OT-Scott or a Winston; DL - Kiwi, Hali, Bunkley).

What i REALLY want is Jon Alston in the 2nd. He played OLB for Stanford, but will be the best SS to come out of this draft - better than Huff, Williams, Bing, or anyone else!!!

Welcome to the board Gapman !!! I think we need a TE as well, but like already stated, TE is deep in this draft and we can get one in the 2nd, 3rd, OR 4th for that matter. I would like nothing more than defense the first day seeing the types of teams we will be playing this year. Our offense can get better and deeper, but our defense needs FAR more attention...

Oh yeah, M. Lewis will be there in the 2nd...

WHODEY !!!

I saw someone having us take him in the draft but Scott Wright at had not read anything about him up until now. Thnx for the insight. Scott Wright has him going to the Texans at the top of the 3rd NFL Countdown.

I agree with your thinking on the first round pick. The recent signings have all played out well, we can now pick the BPA in the first and second without reaching for anything. With TE not being critical to our offense we dont have to pull the trigger on one of them if a stud CB, S or DL falls in the first.

The great part about the draft is that, if you sum up all of the players people think MIGHT go in the first round it equals out to about at least 50 different players. That means somewhere, somehow a few players you didn't think would be there at #24 will be....

And many times it doesn't end up being any of those 50... This looks like a year where anything can happen, especially in the 24th pick range.

It still amazes me that M. Lewis was a top 15 pick when all this mock draft crap started off and now they have him going in the 3rd ??? Craziness I say, craziness...

WHODEY !!!

Settle down. :lmao:

The player being discussed who goes at the top of the 3rd in that mock is Jon Alston. Marcedes was projected to be the 2nd TE selected and went to the Rams at #46. And it was widely speculated that Lewis might fall out of the 1st round after his top end speed was determined. Myself, I happen to think he's a magnificent bastidge and I'd love to see him in stripes.

BTW, that was an interesting mock as it gave the Bengals...

1-DE, Kamerion Wimbley

2-TE, Leonard Pope

3-LB, Spencer Havner

Frankly, I prefer going CB in the 1st round, but I still like the Wimbley pick. However, I have no love for Pope or Havner. So, based upon who was available at each spot, I'd prefer something like this...

1-DE, Kamerion Wimbley or CB (Jennings or Cromartie)

2-LB, Jon Alston

3-DT, Jonathan Lewis

I'm saying if you go back to when these mocks first started coming out, Marcedes Lewis was a top 15 pick and now he's not. I then go on to say, I disagree with the 3rd round assessment given to him recently... I don't think there's anyway in hell he "should" fall that far and I agree the he would be great in stripes in my mind !!! I just don't get how someone falls SOOOOO far !!!

WHODEY !!!

Well, we don't really know where he'll go on draft day, right? Besides, the hit that he's taken so far is in the court of public opinion, and hype doesn't count for much as soon as the draft is over. I can show you a post I wrote in the draft forum where, prior to the college bowl games, an unnamed Los Angeles based NFL scout pegged Lewis as a likely high 2nd round pick due to his marginal top end speed. So his draft stock probably hasn't fallen a bit amongst those who get paid for their analysis. And just for the record, that same scout considered Lewis to be an absolute stud who was likely to slip only because of the ridiculous fascination with combine measurables over gameday production.

But that's the whole point, as it's pretty unlikely he'll be there in the 2nd when the Bengals pick. So I think you have to consider Lewis at #24 or plan for lesser TE prospects at #55....which is fine if you like guys like Leonard Pope....or one of the prospects likely to be available in the 3rd or 4th round.

More and more I lean towards the latter option.

Forgive me for my ignorance... but isn't Lewis the TE that is a pure receiver?

I'm pretty sure that he was the guy I watched in the senior bowl practice... and he was getting pushed around by pass rushers like he didn't know TE's were supposed to know how to block. If it the guy I'm thinking of (and I'm almost positive it is) he doesn't fit our system at all. We'd be better having Stacy Andrews line up at TE.

Fair is fair. Isn't Leonard Pope the massive TE who doesn't really block all that well for a man his size and is considered so stiff in his hips and knees that NFL scouts worry about his ability to get in and out of cuts well enough to run effective pass patterns? So why do I see him mentioned so often as somebody the Bengals should be interested in?

Why does he fit?

I simply don't understand why so many of you feel compelled to trash Marcedes Lewis. He's got far more strengths than he has weaknesses, has a much lower chance of busting than any TE you could mention outside of Vernon Davis, and Lewis would actually add something to the Bengals passing game. As for his blocking, I'm pretty sure the Bengals are looking for a new "Move-TE"...not a younger version of Reggie Kelly.

I ain't trashing Lewis, in fact if we did take him I would be estatic. I just think that Leonard Pope will be real special, i don't know why but I think he will be.

Like I said before.........

1st pick is Lenord Pope

2ndp pick Caude Wroten

Don't tell me that Leonard Pope can't block. I think most TE coming out of college have questions about blocking. Even Vernon Davis has question marks about his blocking. But if your a TE rated high, they are probably rated high becuase they are known for there catching, not blocking. There's not one TE in this draft that has no questions about his blocking.

But at 6'7 258lbs a good TE coach and trainers can beef him up a little bit and show him the techniques it's going to take to be a good blocker.

Claude Wroten is a classic Marvin Lewis pick.

A DT with first round ability but questionable so called character issues. That's why I think he will fall to us in the 2nd round.
