ArmyBengal
Hmm... Carson Palmer was the #1 overall draft pick, waited a year to play, and had 1/1 TD/INT ratio. A late round rookie QB to start the season would be dumber than letting Krenzel play.No way... if we can't get someone who started last year, we'll have to get Martin. We need someone with SOME experience, so he knows how not to make mistakes. If we can't get anyone like that... we'll have to go with Krenzel... because a rookie will go 0-4 to start the season.I think Krenzel would go 0-4 too. I don't think this discussion matters honestly. No Carson for four games = no playoffs. I keep going back and forth with this, but think if we make it out of the first 4 without Carson and sit at 2-2 and 1-1 in the division, we are still in it. Like I said though, I go back and forth on this topic...WHODEY !!!

No Carson for four games = no playoffs.Krenzel at leasy doesn't make big mistakes... which is more than we could probably say for a rookie QB who won't be comfortable with the system... but I agree that 1-3 is the best we could hope for with Krenzel.However... the idea that no Carson for 4 games = no playoffs isn't necessarily true. If we go 2-2 and Carson comes back after the bye week, we're still in good shape. The game @KC would bea tough win with or without Palmer... so if we lose that one, we can't blame it on Palmer completely. The same with @ Pittsburgh. We should be able to beat Cleveland... and hopefully NE with how many impact players they've lost this offseason. Then with Palmer back, we would need to go 8-4 to reach 10-6... certainly a real possibility. Pittsburgh has a very similar schedule, and have lost a lot of good players, so 10 wins will probably win the division. You're right that not having Palmer for the first 4 games will hurt... but if we can break even, we'll still be okay... and our best shot at doing so is getting a decent backup... not drafting a QB on the second day. Stripes
The only option it looks like we'll get in Jamie Martin, and I wouldn't object to that. I honestly can't see him going 2-2 either though. The only team in the first four weeks that might not pose a big challenge is Cleveland, and they are already a division rival on the rise. I doubt we beat the Pats without Carson, simply because I don't think the backup, whoever he may be, would be able to keep up with Tom Brady and that offense. The Chiefs and Steelers games look like guaranteed L's, unless either of those teams suffers some very unfortunate injury before hand.As many others have said, I think our best chance to win any of those games without Carson is to improve the defense as much as possible and hope the quarterback can muster up 20 points. All in all, I agree a rookie would be a big risk, and wouldn't be likely to win many or any of the early games... But in the least it'd provide the backup option for the future. I could see them drafting a late round QB and giving Krenzel the starts anyways.

I guess they just can't admit they signed a franchise QB coming off a tough injury.Hey mods, maybe these backup QB threads should be merged. Whur CHad At?
Pretty sad that we cant agree on a deal with a 36 year old lifetime backup QB.
bengalboomer7
Don't worry, the Bengals are just waiting for the smoke to clear, and it about has.The problem now is, instead of bidding with just ourselves, we have competition that will bring up Martin's pricetag. Whur CHad At?
from what? 600k a year to 700k a year. We should of had no problems signing this old timer

ArmyBengal
I really do wish they would just get this done. I keep thinking about Carson possibly being out the first 4 games and I really want to have the "best guy" in their to keep it close through that time.As much as I have bashed Harrington, maybe they need to rethink it. I keep going back and forth on this topic, but I just want what's the best option to keep our team in the hunt...WHODEY !!!
Whur CHad At?
If the Lions will take a 6 round pick, Hell Why not give it to them. Just get a damn back-up in here now! This should of been done a month ago!!!!!!!!

Dadraftnick
Collins will want too much money. The best guy out there is Jamie Martin and the best guy at the begining of free agency was Jamie Martin ,I guess they want someone with more starting experience than Martin but, its too late to get anyone other than Martin so, I dont know what the hold up is SIGN MARTIN AND GET IT OVER WITH !!!Besides its stupid to give up a draft choice for a guy that may never even play a game for you and only wants to sign for one year. andybren
Besides its stupid to give up a draft choice for a guy that may never even play a game for you and only wants to sign for one year.True. Except we're getting an extra pick from the Texans, so it'd be like trading Kevin Walter for Joey Harrington. Except for the difference in salary. We'll sign Martin. There's really no debate left. Whur CHad At?
Now that Seattle is in the Mix for Martin, it will be much harder, becuase I believe that that might be more attractive for Martin. We should of had Martin signed the first week of FA. Not real happy with Mr.Brown/Katie/Marvin on that one.
