Jet23 Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 Let's hear it. Was Cronin a good hire?I say, despite the bumbling idiots in Clifton, they managed to keystone cop their way to an outstanding hire. Here's why...1) Mick is an outstanding recruiter. He is knee deep in the AAU circuit and I wouldn't doubt if he is able to land 1 or 2 blue chippers for next year. Since Mick left UC, they have landed 0 McDonald All Americans. Many people say that had Kenyon not broken his leg, the Cats would have had an excellent shot at a ring. Guess who recruited them guys?2) You can't take Murray State to the show 2 out of 3 years not knowing how to coach. 3) He wants to be here. He is from Cincy and his father Hep was a local high School legend. I believe him when he says that this is his dream job and I think his enthusiasm will spill over to potential recruits.4) He coached under Huggins and Pitino. That is pretty good experience.I will be honest. I was totally on board with the Hire Andy push. I felt he earned the job. But, Mick may be better in the long run. Yes, Andy can coach. However, the jury is still out on whether he can be a big time recruiter. You can be the best game coach in the nation, but if you don't have the horses, you better get use to the word bubble. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted March 27, 2006 Report Posted March 27, 2006 I think it was a good hire, but it was a "See this guy coahced with Huggins, it's not about Hugs" kind of hire.I believe the main reason Cronin was hired cause he was the best candidate to take the heat off UC for not hiring Kennedy. BengalChamps Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 I'm sure that he will recruit better players than the 2 who just let UC down. Quote
Jet23 Posted March 28, 2006 Author Report Posted March 28, 2006 I think it was a good hire, but it was a "See this guy coahced with Huggins, it's not about Hugs" kind of hire.I believe the main reason Cronin was hired cause he was the best candidate to take the heat off UC for not hiring Kennedy.A lot of people are calling this a compromise selection, but Cronin's name has been on the short list of many AD's lately. I hear people say that this was not a big time name. Did anyone really expect them to lure Coach K away from Duke? I ask people what big name coach they were looking for and I never get much of an answer. I never dreamed that they would hire Mick, just because much of Hugg's criticism revolved around his recruiting. Mick was the best recruiter that Huggs ever had.In a warped way, all of this crap may have been worth it. I have always heard Huggins say that he wanted to retire early. I always thought of Cronin as a possible successor, but in he was going to land a big time job sooner than later. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted March 29, 2006 Report Posted March 29, 2006 Agreed, I think Cronin will have great success here........eventually.But, this was also UC's best hire(besides a big name) to take the heat off not hiring Kennedy. Quote
PMThor Posted March 30, 2006 Report Posted March 30, 2006 He looks like Howdy Doody.Sorry, my Xavieritis was coming out with that.He looks to be a good hire for UC. It will just take a little time for things to work out for him. Next year should be fairly rough for the entire program. Not horrific, just nothing special. Cronin will do well in the long term though. He knows his stuff. Quote
NJ29 Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 Do you think he has an outside shot of landing OJ Mayo? Quote
GapControl Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 No. My money says Huggs grabs OJ for Kansas State. I am not sure Cronin has the `street rep` that Huggs could pull. That is my biggest understanding of why he was hired over AK. Kennedy was a bit too close with his players for Zimpher`s liking. She wants to clean out the so-called thug image of UC. Yeah, whatever. There are thugs on every basketball team in the NCAA. I miss Bob..... still. I think the depression is over but.... it could return when KState begins postseason play next year. Quote
