So how much is his bonus if he signs with the vikings? seems kinda messed up that they can put in a contract if so and so isen't the highest payed player on team for area he plays he gets a insane signing bonus upfront...seems like it will make transition player tag useless if I understand this correctly

Regardless this will affect the re-signing of Eric Steinbach and B. Williams...

Be interesting to see how the O-line is addressed in this year's draft....May give us an indication of how the Bengal's will be looking to re-sign the O-liners....

The signing bonus isn't the issue, it's that if the Hawks match then under the terms of the contract, the whole $50 million deal becomes guaranteed. In other words, it becomes a baseball contract. That doesn't have anything to do with the transition tag per se, it's just a "poison pill" in the deal to try to keep the Hawks from matching. Hutch would be the highest-paid Vike in '06, so the guarantee wouldn't go into effect.

Mega-ballsy move by the Hawks...

Seahawks | Team expected to match offer sheet for Hutchinson

Thu, 16 Mar 2006 14:36:53 -0800

KFAN Sports Radio AM 1130 of Minneapolis reports the Seattle Seahawks are expected to match the offer sheet for OG Steve Hutchinson Thursday, March 16. Hutchinson has a clause in his contract that he will be the highest-paid player on the team or the contract is guaranteed in full. However, the clause is not considered to be a "principle term" of the agreement, meaning the Seahawks would only be forced to match the duration and monetary structure of the deal. It is speculated this situation could be brought to an arbitrator for a final ruling.

Jets tried something like this with the Chad Morton deal a few years ago...and lost...hard for me to see how a clause that would guarantee the deal isn't a principle term

Headed to arbitration...

Seahawks | Hutchinson's fate delayed

Fri, 17 Mar 2006 13:34:00 -0800

Gregg Bell, of the Associated Press, reports the future fate of Seattle Seahawks transition free agent OG Steve Hutchinson will be decided by an arbitration process. That will delay the Sunday deadline, March 19, for the team to match an offer to Hutchinson by the Minnesota Vikings. The NFL Players Association said Friday, March 17, that the league has filed a claim on behalf of the Seahawks contending a clause in the offer sheet Hutchinson signed with the Vikings last weekend circumvents the league's labor contract. The clause in question would guarantee Hutchinson the entire contract sum if Hutchinson is not the team's highest-paid offensive lineman. NFL spokesman Michael Signora confirmed that the NFL had filed the case. Richard Berthelsen, general counsel for the NFLPA, said the union will argue against the Seahawks' and league's claims. "They say the clause circumvents our collective bargaining agreement. It is our belief that it does not," Berthelsen said. Berthelsen said the union's interpretation of the issue is that the clause is permitted by the CBA because it is a "principal term" of the agreement.

Per kffl, the "special master" has ruled against the Seahawks. They have until 9 to match or Hutch becomes a Vike.

According to Florio over at pft, the "hawks and the NFL apparently tried to run a bait-and-switch. They initially brought the case claiming that the "guarantee" provision was not a "principal term." But once they got in they dropped that argument and said it didn't matter because they redid Walter Jones' contract and Hutch would be the highest-paid guy. The NFLPA argued that the guarantee still stood because he wouldn't be the highest paid player at all points during the league year (in other words it was already too late to redo Jones' deal) and apparently they won.

damn vikings driving up price for guards :( why coulden't they do that after we sign eric

Ehhh. The Hutch deal certainly doesn't help, but Steinbach was going to cost serious coin anyhow. Not only is he a good guard, but has shown he can deliver solid play at LT and C as well. That combination of talent at his primary spot and proven versatility all along the line is something teams will throw mountains of money at if he ever hits FA.

Didn't take long for the Hawks to do something with the money they didn't use to match Hutch...

Seahawks | Team reaches agreement with Peterson

Mon, 20 Mar 2006 20:56:05 -0800

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Seattle Seahawks have reached an agreement with free agent LB Julian Peterson to a seven-year contract worth $54 million. The deal includes $18.5 million in guarantees, including $10 million for the 2006 season.

Like Alfred Einstein used to say hindsight is 50-50.....

Mike Brown will be rubbing his rump for awhile if the Bengals do decide to extend Steinbach. He would've fetched a good bit for starters but I gotta think he'd have been a helluva lot cheaper before the CBA got extended and before this monster deal for Hutchinson.

What a cheap parlor trick the Vikings pulled, eh? Bout as bad as the Max Montoya handshake. Let that be a lesson not to transition a player worthy of franchise designation. The Seahawks got a good draft to get a replacement, though, and shouldn't be too bad off with Pork Chop Womack or even Chris Spencer ready to step in.
