schweinhart
Signing Dex Jack looks like the Bengals will priortize drafting a safety less, especially if they don't release Kim Herring. There's should be decent ones still available in the 5th or 6th round who can be developed at much less the cost than burning a pick on a safety on Day 1. derekshank
Source: Bengals agree with Jackson By GEOFF HOBSONMarch 13, 20061:45 p.m. According to a NFL source, the Bengals have reached a four-year deal with Tampa Bay safety Dexter Jackson, their first free-agent of the offseason. No terms were available. The salaries were just released on KFFLBengals | Contract update: D. JacksonMon, 27 Mar 2006 06:50:04 -0800Cincinnati Bengals FS Dexter Jackson signed a four-year contract that includes base salaries of $800,000 (2006), $1.0 million (2007), $1.3 million (2008) and $1.5 million (2009).Looks like a round 1 or 2 safety pick to me....I don't know what makes you say that. Just because we got Jackson cheap? I thought the main reason we went out and got a veteran safety was so that we wouldn't be forced to reach for a specific position on draft day. Now we have other bigger more immediate needs than SS for our 1st pick. Although... I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we used a 3rd rounder to get a safety. It's clear as the cloud of smoke around Spain's head. We still have three immediate needs. 1. Safety. 2. Defensive Line. 3. Tight End. In the first round, the player must absolutely be a sure thing. He should be an immediate starter. We can find that at safety or tight end this year, and there is a clear grade of difference between players at both position. The fact is, defensive tackles and even defensive ends are iffy picks early. They are hit or miss. On the other hand, safeties tend to be sure things. Jackson's numbers look to me to be the veteran backup numbers for a guy who will be a role model to a young early pick. The only question is, does one of the more attractive DTs fall to us in round 1, and how many safeties fly out before our pick. As for TE, I'm still hoping we wait until day two. JPW
Can you really keep that many safeties on the roster? 1. Dexter Jackson2. Madieu3. KK4. Kim Herring5. Draft Pick6. Anthony Mitchell 7. Indiana Jones8. Body9. BuaDon't the Bengals try to stay with only 4-5 safeties? What are they going to do with all these guys? I assume they are letting Mitchell go, Jones was a practice squad guy but up and coming, but then what? We have a total overload of safeties! We have 8 Safeties and one free agent safety and only 4 corners and one free agent corner on the roster. With Greg Brooks as our 4th corner. Do the Bengals plan on switching any of the safeties to corner? I guess we could always have KK play spot duty at corner, but we have to get rid of some of these safeties and pick up another corner.Body played safety in college but has always been listed as a CB with the Bengals.
