Deja Vu all over again...

Another year of free agency, and yet another year of watching all the players that would be a great fit for the Bengals get signed rapidly by other teams. When will the Bengals finally step to the plate and sign someone?? Or we going to get stuck once again with some of the bottom of the barrel free agents like John Thorton and Brian Robinson? Honestly, how many of you guys even heard of those two before we signed them? This is VERY disheartening as a Bengals fan.

Why is it disapointing. I can't believe you guys act this way during FA. It's like trying to get a hot girl you have no chance for, and you don't know that she is really a bitch that don't put out.

This has been the Bengals philosophy since, oooh, the creation of free agency. And the kicker is, THEY ARE RIGHT!!! Free agency is soooooooo overrated. If a guy is a free agent, then his former team didn't want him for a reason, whether it be play, age, or money.

Calm down, drink a beer, and laugh at the Ravens and Browns, it'll make you feel better

It is not always because his former team didn't want him, sometimes it is because he played out the full years of his contract and now is available for free agency and turned down his former teams offers for extentions in order to become a free agent. (Kitna for example) If all three safeties leave town Sunday and Monday without a contract, then I will know for a fact Mike Brown is back to his old ways, he was happy to see the Bengals get to the play-offs for the first time in 15 years, because it means he sold more seats and that he is making more money. He can now let the team go down the s**tter for a couple of years and save money on players.

I hope this isn't the case, but with Mike Brown's track record, I wouldn't be suprised.

Actually, Thornton came in as a result of the one year, '02, in which the Bengals did move and spend pretty aggressively. Bash him all you want, but the guy has been a solid starter, and would probably have been even better had they put a big 2-gap guy next two him. But in any case he's easily been the best Bengals DT since Big Duddy. (Which says more about the quality of Bengals DT than it does about John, but there it is, anyway.)

That year also brought us Clemons, who gave us 2 good years, and Tory James, who went on to the Pro Bowl. The only real bust out of the "big four" we signed that year was Kevin Hardy.

Whe the Bengals get serious and pony up some dough, FA actually tends to work pretty well for them. Kitna was another example of the team stepping up, and he worked out fairly well, too -- maybe would have done even better if LeBeau hadn't muffed the QB positon up so badly with his 3-way competition before the '02 disaster. Another example: Richmond Webb. They took crap from the media for the size of the deal they gave him, but he turned out to be worth every penny, stabilizing a LT spot that had become a joke thanks to "screen door" Jones and giving them time to bring Levi along right.

When FA doesn't work for the Bengals is when they do...well, pretty much what they appear to be doing now. Which is let the crop get picked over and then pick through the remaining bargain-basement types. That's how we end up with end up with turds like Michael Westbrook, repeat injury list offenders like Kim Herring, and worn-down vets grabbing a last paycheck (too many to count).

Great football analogy regarding FA !!! :lmao:

I guess you just see these guys out there that you KNOW will be a huge upgrade and the natural response is I WANT THEM I WANT THEM I WANT THEM !!! Then the natural response to them going somewhere else is a response along the line of DAMN*T DAMN*T DAMN*T !!! I feel your pain, but am better today !!!

Im just thinking they have their sights set on a few players they think can help the team ...Adams, Jackson, Demps would be a few..

Arent more cuts coming soon due to the cap???

No...the major part of the cuts have already been done. Teams had to be under the current cap by a certain date that was prior to free agency. But because of the new CBA, a great deal of the cuts didn't happen because the cap was raised. There will be some more guys cut to make room for new free agents and for draft picks, but a great deal of your high profile guys with big salaries have already been cut.

Not with the new CBA. What you see is pretty much it.

Jackson I don't think much of (others disagree). Demps, if healthy, would be a notable upgrade at safety, I think (other disagree). Adams, if he has anything left in the tank, would be an upgrade over B-rob...but we need a lot more than that to substantially improve our sub-par line. If the Bengals aren't going to spend for a top-tier FA, then they're going to have to address the position pretty high in the draft.

How can you say,

It's like trying to get a hot girl you have no chance for, and you don't know that she is really a bitch that don't put out.

We are a 11 win team that made the playoffs with a great offense and high optimism in the futre, a newer stadium and training facilities, and a great coach. Why should we not have a chande at some of these guys? Sounds like you are taking a more negative approach to this situation than I am. The only reason we won't have a shot at those guys is one thing, MIKE BROWN and his unwillingness to open his wallet. He is a businessman and that is it.

Mike Brown would rather make 2 million dollars and have the Bengals finish the season 2-14 with the first pick in the draft and have all the fans excited about who they will pick, than lose 2 million dollars and win a Superbowl. That's the cold hard facts.

I just wish someone like Boomer or Munuoz had the money to buy the Bengals. Then we would see someone trying to win every year. Those guys are competitive and don't like to lose. They would do everything they could each year to put a great team on the field, even if that meant spending money in free agency.

And I'm OK with that, Joisey.

Look at our D right now.

Pollack coming into year two

Odell coming into year two

Landon in year three

Madieu in year three

Geathers in year three

Ratliff in year three

Fanene in year two

Askew in year three, but a big?

And it's hard to argue at least some of these guys are poised to break out

And at least in the draft you get to choose what you want

Now, I try not to speculate on the draft much, cause it's such a crapshoot, but combine a Watson/Bunkley/Hali/Lawson/insert your fav dlineman here with a Sam Adams/Thornton/Smith rotation, and get a Whitner/Allen/Cromartie/Marshall/Bing/insert your fav dback here with the current Oneal/Ratliff/madieu/Tory/ insert vet FA safety here and it looks like a good recipe to me

And how FA is shaping out I don't think Kitna has any option better than coming back. The Lions say Joey is there #1 guy, Pennington stayed with the Jets and they are trying to trade for Ramsey plus looking at QB with #4, New Orleans and Miami are looking at Drew Brees, and NO could go QB in the draft. And I haven't heard a thing connecting him with the Ravens.

And I honestly will be extremely optimistic if all this plays out. We have a very young D and throw a couple of vets with some gas in the tank and a lockerroom prescence along with some Marvin Lewis hand picked rookie studs and I'm :D

What I meant Sportees is FA is overrated. Why overpay too much it's not much of an upgrade. The teams that do this would have been in cap hell if not for the new CBA, and that's why every few years teams like the Titans, Raiders, and Redskins have to dump so many of their own players into FA.

When have the Patroits been big FA spenders, they add key vet components like the Rodney harrisons and the all time malcontent Dillon with their current crop of players they Want!

I doubt Kitna will be back after reading this...

What is clear is that the Bengals weren’t going to pay Rosenfels close to what they offered Kitna to extend his contract back in October even though have about $12 million to spend in free agency. It’s believed they offered the 33-year-old Kitna in the range of $1.5 million per year in making him one the top two or three paid backups in the league. After securing a $2 million signing bonus, Rick Smith, Rosenfels’ agent, kept in touch with the Bengals but indicated Saturday night that Palmer’s new $97 million extension has them seeking a lower deal for their No. 2 quarterback.

http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5127

If a team is willing to pay a back-up unexperienced QB that kind of money, someone will pay Kitna more than what the Bengals are willing to give up.

I honestly see a guy like Tommy Maddox coming in cheap just to get a shot at another Superbowl and a chance to get back at the Steelers who gave up on him.

But Kitna has already stated if he is going to be a backup it will be behind Palmer. He wants to start somewhere, and those options are minimal. That statement I thought meant that the Bengals offered Kitna more than they were ever willing to offer Sage Thyme. So I guess I see it completely the opposite :sure:

Mikey did not want to pay Boomer his 5 mil despite he was at the top of his game ....he just wished him well

and the rest is history.

I would love to see two new faces at DT but would be very surprised if it happned. I think we might be looking at a DT, DE and no doubt a new Saftey. This alone would be a tremendous upgrade and with Schobel leaving, TE will be addressed...their hand is forced now.

I think Sam Adams is a very good prospect.......

Of all the games we played during the year the St Louis game was by far the most painful to watch from the defenseive side of the ball.....the game was a gimmie but ouch!

As the General in Gladiator said "hold the line". Stop people at the line of scrimage period.

How about Sam Adams and the Bunk? Let's play a little black and blue!

You are so right. It would be disheartening if the Bengals jumped into free agency with both feet and exhausted their salary cap by handing out large signing bonuses to some other team's cast-offs. Honestly, while free agency is great for the players, it is usually a sucker's bet for the teams. For every Tory James, there are four John Thorntons. The Bengals are taking the right approach. So the Bengals didn't get McCree or Rosenfels or the big Samoan from Baltimore? Who are these guys, anyway? Most likely, they are to their former teams what Mark Roman and Artrell Hawkins were once to the Bengals. It would be infinitely preferable to extend the contracts of Levi Jones, Willie Anderson, Eric Steinbach, Bobbie Williams or Deltha O'Neal than blow the cap on has-beens or never- weres. Any way, the Bengals will sign some free agents. So what if they didn't sign one on the first day of free agency? From Saturday's signings, it would appear that yesterday was mainly an opportunity for fools to be separated from some of their money. The Bengals are a good team with a lot of talent. They do not have to resort to utter desperation and folly. Like the Browns. Who did the Pats sign yesterday? The Steelers?

Bengals | Team expresses interest in Arrington

Sun, 12 Mar 2006 07:48:04 -0800

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports agent Carl Poston said the Cincinnati Bengals have expressed interest in another one of his clients, free agent LB LaVar Arrington (Redskins).

There's your big name and personally I am extremely not interesed

I don't have a problem with bolstering the D in the draft, either. All I'm saying about FA is that history argues that you get a better return "overspending" for a top-tier FA vs. spreading the money around among several bargain FAs.

You are about as ignorant of the truth as a blind man who has lost his hearing, lost both his arms and legs in a car accident, and has severe allergies that prevent him from hearing.

Mike Brown WANTS TO WIN. He has ALWAYS wanted to win. He has NEVER spent less money than other owners. He hasn't spent it in the right places, but it's not about making more money. It has ALWAYS been about being loyal to his guys. Mike Brown has always been about building the team through the draft, as Paul Brown intended, and paying his own free agents to stick around.

So get a clue you moronic dolt, and get off the Mike Brown should be replaced kick. He's a good guy.

I would love to see the replies this statement would have generated in 2002.

Mike Brown may be a great guy, but he has never shown the ability to recognize talent. Thank goodness he finally realized he isn't his Dad and hired some folks to run the team. If Katie weren't around this franchise would still be drafting in the top five every year.

Long live coach Lewis!

Didn't Mr. Brown pretty much give Coach Lewis final say over players who come in? If Marvin wants a guy, they'll try to get him, but their not going to bend over and take a reaming to get him.

These guys, if they perform, will be here for a long time and be key players in a great D.

Sapp wouldn't have won the Super Bowl for us last year. Sage Rosenfels isn't going to put us in the playoffs this year. LaVar Arrington would totally screw up the money situation and any chemistry in the LB corp.

Now an upgrade at DT or safety is needed, but not at the expense of the total team picture. If someone fits that description, Marvin will have him. How many big name FA did the steelers bring in last year to win it all?

They did it with the draft and one dirty hit. ;) Sit back, relax, enjoy our 1 team player FA, and get ready for April 29.

thank you for being the lap puppy you are. Now are you saying Boomer did not want to play here?

Fact is Mikey did not want to pony up and Boomer went and did Monday nite.

I was just curious if you played with Bob Trumpy in the NFL and by the way are you employed by Mikey along with Mr. Beddinghaus (the broker for the deal that gave Mikey the keys tto the city? The air to I might add. How unethical is it to do what he did? He broke no law but........

Wait a minute.....don't start off by calling me a name you would not call me to my face.

Why do you care that I don't like Mikey? I know we could be friends.

Wow...nice way to make a point! You insult my opinion and make that the defense for your arguement! Damn you sure got me on that one! :sleep1:

We had 15 straight losing seasons...until 3 years ago where we went 8-8, 8-8, then 11-5. Mike Brown is NOTORIOUS for being the CHEAPEST owner in football. Why do we have such a hard time getting free agents to come to Cincinnati? Because MIKE BROWN is so damn cheap! Damn get a clue dude. :dots:

When the Bengals first started into free agency they would send tickets to guys in coach...that became a huge joke about the Bengals...Mike Brown used to also make free agents pay for their own hotel...this isn't stuff I am making up...this is FACT! How many other 8-8 teams did you know of 2 years ago that was in the top 5 in profitability, despite being a "small market" team? The Bengals were #4 for the 2004 season.

So shut up with the insults, if you want to argue my opinion, come back at with me with facts or just sit down and suck on your thumb. ;)
