derekshank
I just saw the Ravens signed Trevor Pryce. I haven't heard what kind of contract it is.... but with the kind of cash these other guys are getting, you have to imagine that it is a boatload. The only problem is that he will probably play quite well in Baltimore. Damn.

HoosierCat
Just like I told you. The new big-ass cap combined with a shallow FA market equals a lot of money for players who haven't earned it. Either the Bengals will play this game... or they will get nobody. It's more pronounced this year thanks to the big increase in $$$ from the CBA...but the FA market is always shallow and if you want to be a factor, you have to be willing to pay a premium. Elite players rarely come free, and when they do they get monster deals. Good players get elite deals. Average players get good deals. Below-average players get average deals. It's always a step up. That's why I've always viewed the Bengals' focus on "not overpaying" in FA as a problem. For better or worse, it's the nature of free agency. What's your guess? They will have to act fast, and cough up a lot of money. Rocky Bernard and Larry Triplett are still out there... but my guess is we get no one. This is only one of the reasons Mike Brown probably didn't like the new deal... he knows that his unwillingness to overpay for a player is going to cost him every somewhat decent free agent out there.Yup. You and I are on the same wavelength. It's frustrating, but it is probably just the way it is. If we want anything decent in FA, we will either have to take damaged goods, or pay much more than they are worth. My guess is damaged goods (i.e. Will Demps and Darren Howard)If we got those two I would be content. Demps would eaily be our best safety after Madieu and Howard would at least be Clemons in his first couple seasons. At least we're hanging in there, y'know? Maybe even getting a bit better. Whur CHad At?
Bye Bye Triplett:ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (March 11, 2006) -- Defensive tackle Larry Tripplett and tight end Robert Royal signed with the Buffalo Bills as the team wasted no time addressing its numerous needs on the first day of free agency. HoosierCat
Per Hobson this a.m., it's pretty much SSDY. The market for defensive linemen is too rich for the Bengals' blood and they likely won't make a move until the prices come down. Apparently, their primary hope is that they can get Sam Adams cheap. They are also not pushing at safety for similar reasons. Chavous and McCree got sizeable deals, even Marquand Manuel got a $2 million/year average, and they are unwilling to pay that much for the position.Hobson says that even Sage Rosenfels' 4-year, $6 million deal with the Texans was more than the Bengals were willing to pay.SSDY. walshfan
Cant say I disagree with that philosophy right now...Most of the early signings were overpriced imo...sam adams and dexter jackeson seem to be on their radar..

They will have to act fast, and cough up a lot of money. I can't see it. My guess is the Bengals stick to their past strategy of letting the early birds drastically overpay for average talent while they concentrate on signing one or two visitors in their price range...or redoubling their efforts to re-sign their own players. Then after the market cools and stabilizes they'll try to get better value by targeting players who are just as good as those curently being over pursued after they've been cost cut by their current teams immediately after the draft.
