Combine Coverage

...been watching the coverage on NFL Network over the last couple of days. Here are some quick comments, with no implication on who the Bengals should take.

If Marcus Vick is telling the truth about his issues...he is getting a bad rap...if he is lying, he should be in Hollywood.

With all the hoopla about Reggie Bush's size (201 lbs.), I'll say this, he looks very solid and strong as he'd been working on building up/gaining weight. Based on the Tv coverage, he can't have any more than 5% body fat...keep in mind muscle weighs 3x more than fat...if he had 10% body fat, he'd weigh 211 and noone would be talking about his weight.

Winston Justice is big, strong and could start very soon on most teams.

There is a big difference in ability from the top OL guys to the mid to late round OL guys...big drop off

RB Addai from LSU is freaking quick (4.41/4.37). Maurice Drew (4.5/4.41) is built like a monster, they called him "a mini-Earl Campbell" on TV.

...more to come...

According to Clayton 5 OT's could be taken R1.

He looks weird on TV though so he may not know what he is talking about. I hope they all are picked in the first 23 picks so the Bengals can have more defensive choices or take POPE!

Many mocks project the Clowns with a LB in R1, but they could be persuaded to take a OT. The Bills just released an OT so they might take a R1 OT too.

I was talking to my buddy (Cowboys fan) the other day and said I could see the Cowboys taking a chance on Vick in the later rounds, assuming no one takes a chance on him earlier. Bledsoe isn't getting any younger and he would be good for Vick to learn behind for a season. Don't give me that "no one will take a chance" crap either. If that is your opinion, please look no further than Clarett going in the 3rd to the Broncos last year. How many players are going to have the talent that Vick does at such a key position in the 5-7 rounds ?? I know, there is always some unknown that makes it, but you get what I'm saying...

WHODEY !!!

Watching a group of WR's run their 40's.

First runs:

The Hofstra WR ran a 4.43.

Skyler Green - 4.50

Bouknight - 4.70...but looked way faster and is big.

Hagan - 4.45

Bloom - 4.58

Hannon - 4.49

Hass - 4.61

Hinkel - 4.50

C. Jackson - 4.37 ...damn, with those hands..20 yrs old, also

Times got faster from the first to second runs yesterday for the RB's and OL...

2nd Pass..of those they showed.(unofficial, as they announce)

M. Hagans - 4.63

Hannon - 4.43 (lean and long, needs some mass)

Hass - 4.62...not fast but will do it all day...never drops a pass.

Hinkel - 4.51

C. Jackson - 4.29...smoked...they also mention a 40 inch vertical..d a m n

Want to mention something I have observed.

The guys with the faster times are CLEARLY faster and smoother. Noone I have seen has run a >surprise< fast time, as in the guys turning in the 4.5-4.7's really are forcing it. Thye could not run that fast with a ball under thier arm. They are really running as hard as they can.

The guys with the sub-4.5 times are smoking in a controlled and practiced way. Very hard effort but visually more controlled, as in you couldstick a ball under thier arm and not lose much speed. The difference is pretty clear.

Some QB drills are gettting some play....with the WR catching.

the Tap-Tap (sideline) drill...thye didn't show much, now the Gauntlet...

Hagan only caught half the balls. C. Jackson, caught them all, Blackmon is a CB after that run, Hannon loked good. Hass is automatic, like glue. Anderson looked Ok..Avant looked polished, noproblem..

Of the two runs they showed, Jackson, Avant, Hannon and Hass looked sharp, Hagan had a good run and a bad one..all focus..Hagans has solid hands but looked slow, Blackmon came back with a good run..

THis is just one group of WR...I hope they show more groups...

As long as he isn't a box of rocks, he'll go in r1.

The QB Ingle Martin looks very good. Cutler has a good arm. Omar Jacobs looks good but throws with a short extension, not in a quick way but a puushing way...Brodie looks OK...he's Rob Johnson re-iincarnated.

D. Hagan nees to work on his concentration...he has a 1:1 drop/catch ratio from the TV coverage...

Hagan only caught half the balls.

Yup, pretty much what I expected. The guy can't catch worth a damn and only has marginal speed. He's got to be the most overrated player in the draft.

The QB Ingle Martin looks very good.

I'd never seen this guy play a lick until several days ago when Corey Chavous named his as his most likely to surprise player at the combine. They followed up by showing about 5 highlite plays featuring Martin. First came two or three short plays showing off outstanding touch. Very accurate. Then he was shown tossing a deep pass that traveled almost 60 yards through the air....before hitting the WR in stride...along the sideline.

Another group of QB's running the 40...

DJ Shockely -4.58/4.54...a head of steam, fast.

K. Smith - 4.74/4.58..6'5" 217...that is faast

M. Vick - 4.54/4.49...while waving a gun, and stomping the timer..Just kidding.

Barrick Nealy - 4.66/4.62..big strong dude

D. Olsen - a slow looking 5.13, if that is possible

Pinegar - 5.14 Slow, didn't look like he was comfortble or trying

WHitehurst - 4.75/4.73..decent for a big guy.

R. McNeal - 4.41/4.37...good Texas A&M QB...loads of talent

Meyer - 4.68

Porter 4.74

B. Smith - 4.49..quick...

Greg Lee. 4.62 - meh

Brandon Marshall - my sleeper...hells' yeah...4.50 ..6'4"+ 229 ..my official Henry replacement.

Mix 4.45 6'4" 235

Moss - wow...4.34..real real big burst off line.

Nance - 6'4" 213..4.58...not much explosion, but fast at end.

Obomanu - 4.41...and a strong, cut dude.

Reid - 4.41...looked faster

Rodgers - 4.66

Ross - 4.66

I liked seeing Mix run a 4.46 at 6'4 235 ...He trimmed down from 250 and now looks like a solid WR...

I was hoping he would stay at 250 and run 4.6 or so...He was the TE hybrid that I wanted in round 5 or

6...I would say he likelymoved up tothe 2-3 range now.

By the way I would say Broderick Bunkley will not be around at 24 now. Bulked up to 306 and put

up 44 reps at the Combine. Props to my boy Mike Kudla for putting up 45 reps which tied te bench

record at the combine.

Chad Jackson is a sure first rounder after what he did at the combine. Derek Hagan does suck from what I've seen.

Chad Jackson is not just a sure 1st rounder, he's this year's Troy Williamson, the WR who will be picked WAY earlier than expected. Dude has lit it up at the combine and still has his pro day scheduled to show even more.

I was hoping he'd slip to us in round 2 darnit! Now we can't get him unless we trade up and pick him in round 1, and I hope we don't do that.
