I don't know who deserves the bulk of the credit for what looks like a strong draft on paper, but it looks like a step in the right direction at the very least. At the end of the day, Mike Brown will have little to no impact on how focused Smith and Maualuga will be, how consistent Michael Johnson will be, or how effectively Coffman will rehabilitate his injury. I'm hoping that we finally have the coaching staff across the board to maximize all of these players' potential and at the end of the day, Marvin and co. will have the most impact on how this draft class goes down in Bengals history.
I just look at teams like New England and Pittsburgh who annually seem to have average drafts at best, but end up competing for Championships every season.

Any player with return ability has a real chance to make the final roster, especially if Scott is going to be our backup RB. Outside of that, I agree that Cosby has a chance to beat out Purify, Uruttia and company if he shows anything on STs. Cosby has over 90 catches and 1100 yards on a National Championship-caliber team last season and might prove to be a steal.

None of you seem to remember but we talked about this guy for weeks. This is my boy, the Samoan with the nearly unpronouncable name. Vakapuna was Tahi's replacement at BYU, the guy described by nearly everyone as his virtual clone. He's a RB who grew too big for the position, but he can block and he's a very soft handed reciever.
I'm all about the Vakapuna.
I recall vividly the conversation that took place in regards to this kid and remember the Bengals coaches saying how much he impressed them.
Nice call there Hair !!!
BYU fan here, just checking out the fan sites for our 2 draftees. Fui's a high-energy, extremely physical back. I think you guys are going to like him if he is able to stick around. He started out as a tailback and actually did well. His move to tailback came following an injury after his sophomore year, I believe. I think as part of his rehab, he added a lot of bulk (muscle, not fat). In fact, it was because of his injury that our current starting RB, Harvey Unga, was pressed into duty and as a result nailed down the job for as long as he's there.
Fui was still affected by his injury his junior year, and didn't have great stats. He was going to be the backup RB this year, but we lost the starting FB (Manase Tonga) to academic issues for 2008, and Fui was asked to take over as starting FB.
He's a monster as a blocker. When you go back and look at BYU highlights this past year (and some last year) you can see him just blowing up guys as a lead blocker. I remember one where he just flattened two guys consecutively on one play. I think the consensus was that if he was going to make a place in the NFL, it would be as a fullback. In fact, one of the criticisms I'd hear about him when he was a tailback was that he seemed to try to run over people too much instead of going around them. I think he's also going to be a good contributor on special teams.
He's really improved his hands, and he definitely can run with the ball, as well. Watching him his sophomore year, it seemed like if we were 10-11 yards out and wanted a score, give it to Fui, and he'd make it in. In fact, he had 8 TD's that year, while our 1,000 yard senior rusher only had 7.
One more thing I recall is that he redshirted as a true freshman and played on the scout team. The defensive coordinator complained about Fui playing too hard on the scout team - he was worried the defensive starters were going to get injured.
By the way, I am surprised Tahi has lasted this long in the NFL - I always thought Fui was a better back than Tahi. Tahi's strength was knowing the blocking scheme. Fui's is his pure physicality.
This video made the rounds a couple of years ago:
Fui's the one in the orange & yellow striped lava lava. Many of the other guys doing the haka with him are linemen. You can get a little idea of how big he really is.
Just thought you guys would like a little background about Fui.
Thanks for the awesome insight and welcome to the board.

At this point, any move involving Levi leaving the Bengals will be joined by arrival of a veteran OT through free agency.
-
A George Foster signing could still be in play. The Bengals definitely need to sign an insurance policy, if the plan is to release Levi.
I think we need another RB, too. Who is the starter if Ced goes down or is ineffective? I think we'll be waiver-wire scouring as normal in August and New England, Jacksonville, NY Giants and Carolina seem to have ample RBs.

Here's the link and some of these signings are now being reported on KFFL.com

It's gonna be one helluva fight for the #3 spot behind Benson and Russell. Whoever is the best kick returner probably wins out, but Bernard Scott has the chance to be a special player. He's had almost 80 total TDs the past 2 seasons, and that's pretty remarkable on any level of football. He'll probably be the best receiving RB on the roster, too. Scott is comparable to Chris Johnson, IMO.
-
Screw what I think, ESPN thinks Cincinnati goes top three!!
In November, Andre Smith, Maualuga and Michael Johnson were all in the discussion as possible Top 10 picks. I even saw some mocks that had Smith and Johnson as possible #1 overall selections, earlier in the college season. To land all three without trading is UNREAL!
-
The guy was unstoppable against Alabama and is exactly the kind of player that could make the team and develop into a starter down the line. He might not be a blazer, but he has excellent hands and loves to work the middle of the field.
-
He's by far my favorite player that the Bengals drafted this year. Just wait until the first time he blocks a FG. I'm really not sure how he gets on the field, but I think he could be a 7-10 sack guy next year if he's used correctly.
-
This was an ok pick but just wondering why we didn't take R. Jennings with one of our first 2 7th rnders or even a 6th?
We already have 3 RBs on the roster that are over 225 pounds and Jennings probably doesn't offer as much on Special Teams as Scott. Jennings almost went undrafted, so there's obviously some concern on how well he'll transition to the league.
-
Yeah, Marvin already said that he didn't expect all the picks to make the team, but maybe one of the 6th or 7th rounders surprise with a strong camp. Bernard Scott is my sleeper pick to make an impact and should be the starting KR/PR. In drafting four players with first or second round talent, I'd give the draft an A.
-
Has Jennings from Liberty been picked yet?
Jennings is still there... but I'd prefer Peerman at RB.
He's a guy that a lot of people had as a 3rd or 4th rounder. Any word out there to what's caused him to slip so far?
-
All this guy needs is proper motivation and coaching, and I think Marvin and Zim will get the most out of him. Give me a 6'7'', 260+ pound kid who runs a sub 4.5 forty any day of the week. Johnson also had pretty good production in college, so he's not a developmental guy. He could easily in up being the steal of the draft.
-
Has Jennings from Liberty been picked yet?
-
This guy will be the punter next year and one of the better ones in the league for the next 10+ seasons. How can anyone be upset about spending a 5th rounder on an upgrade for Larsony? He wouldn't have been there at in the 6th round, without a doubt. With field position as valuable as it is in the AFC North, he might contribute more than any player we've picked so far in '09.
ANOTHER GREAT PICK!
-
Yes, the picks do provide flexability, but Jeanty is on a one year deal along with Tank and Dhani isn't getting younger.
I think they just ensured they will still be able to run the 4-3 the way they want come next year...
Who would've ever thought we'd get Rey in the 2nd round? Rivers, Dhani and Rey will be awesome next year, and we needed another LB with Johnson and Jeanty both FAs. Our LB corp is now deep and talented, and probably the strength of the team. We have five starting-quality players and it should be a nice battle to watch in training camp.
-
Me personally, I don't want Ringer. He carried a sh*tload of times up there at Michigan St.
I'll pass on Ringer, as well. He would be a good value pick at this point, though. Here's to hoping the Bengals grab a CB in the 4th. D.J. Moore would be fantastic. How about Lawrence Sidbury from Richmond, as another pash rusher?
-
My first time checking in, but you have to be high or drunk not to LOVE this draft so far. A top OT, the best ILB (which some thought could/should have been the pick at #6), the best athlete and upside prospect at DE in the entire draft and likely the 2nd best TE in the draft, if not for injury, as your other 3rd rounder?
This is awesome!
We basically got two 1st round talents and two 2nd round talents, at worst, with our first 4 picks. This is the best draft in a long while for the Bengals.
-
Hey, call me crazy, but I'll take Harvin if he's there at #38. I understand that college students smoke weed and those guys just happened to be some of the ones that got caught, albeit poor timing for that at the Combine and all. I'll say it worked out OK for Marino, Moss and Sapp, amongst many others who partaked back in school.
I'm getting that sick feeling in my stomach about Tyson Jackson. I know he's a good prospect, but it just smells like a Bengals pick to me, especially if the team has concerns about Geathers. Marvin loves SEC guys who are "under the radar" and guys who were leaders of their teams in college. It also makes sense in that he's one of the high-character guys and considered a safe pick by most. Outside of getting a QB, we could use help at virtually every position, so I don't know if I'd "alcohol abuse" that way, especially if the Flat Screen is involved.
We're less than 17 hours away from meeting the highest paid rookie Cincinnati Bengal of all time!
-
Well I really do think Chiefs will skip past Curry and either go with Raji or Tyson Jackson...Their just switching to the 3-4 they need the key pieces which is defensive line... Pioli is the guy who drafted Vince Wilfork and Richard Seymour top 10....Browns they have a probowl NT in SHaun Rodgers and a serviceable backup in Shaun Smith but who are their 3-4 ends? So they could take Tyson Jackson...
I could see top 5 going something like this
1.)Stafford
2.)Sanchez
3.)BJ Raji
4.)Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith
5.)Tyson Jackson
Tyson Jackson is amazing. NFL Network is saying he could go as early as #3 to the Chiefs and won't make it past #5. Where did all of this come from?he's been pretty highly rated for a while I think it's just starting to click hey all these teams are switching to 3-4 or new to it and then you look at the Patriots who drafted their entire Defensive line in the 1st round....Ty Warren 13th Richard Seymour 6th Vince Wilfork 21st....
Before this week, every mock I saw or heard had him going in the 12-20 range, now suddenly he's Top 5 consideration. Truthfully, I expected one of the pash rushers to ascend like they always do, but didn't see it coming in the person of Tyson Jackson. Maybe he's the real deal, though. I know he made a lot of plays, especially TFLs, at LSU. I'm also hearing that teams are quietly ranking Andre Smith as the Top OT, and he might go #2 to St. Louis or even #4 to Seattle.
-
Tyson Jackson is scaring the HELL out of me, but it's awesome if he goes Top 5 along with the 2 QBs.

There no amount of cash that would compensate for the agonizing stress that Mr. Brown endures on a yearly basis in making questionable picks in the draft or signing players at above market value. Hell, he should be paid an additional 500K for his Redeemer role, alone. We should all be lucky to have a man that is not only football genious in making the roster decisions that have enabled us to be perennial playoff and Super Bowl contenders since '91, but a man that has the concerns of the community as a whole in mind in providing employment opportunites to many who are considered to be in the "at-risk" category.

2nd Round: Rey Maualuga
in Cincinnati Bengals
Posted
I think that Rey will be on a backup SLB and MLB, initially. He could replace Jeanty on passing downs, as Marvin likes to blitz his SLB and I remember Zimmer calling out Jeanty earlier in the offseason for not making enough plays and converting in the pash-rush. With Jeanty a UFA after the season, I think Rey will slide into that position before eventually taking over a MLB. Rey, Dhani and Rivers with Brandon Johnson and Jeanty as the 4th and 5th LBs should make for a pretty deep unit next season.
