  1. If you get the run game going, it prevents the defense from pinning their ears back and coming after the QB because they have to watch for the run. It also means that if you have a decent play-action QB, he can "freeze" defenses for a second while they try to figure out if it's a pass or run play. Esiason was the master of this, he had the best play-action fake I've ever seen.

It seems to me like that is the kind of offense they want to run here. They have there James Brooks and ickey Woods, I've seen more screens then ever before, they are getting the ball out quick, like they did back then. Makes me wonder if they are taking a page from back in the day.

Possibly, but I think the bottom line is that Hue understands how to sculpt a game plan around his talent. Play to your strengths and all that...

  2. More TDs would be nice but as long as the D is playing this well we can afford FGs.

For now. But, there are sure to be games where the offense will need to give the D a bit of a cushion.

Also, as nice as it has been, they are going to start committing turnovers at some point, which will put more pressure on the D. At some point, Andy is going to have to change form "game manager" to "gunslinger".

Hopefully they'll be up to the task when those times come.

  3. And the legacy of Sideshow Bob bites Zim in the butt...

    http://profootballta...her-suspension/

And in more good news for Zimmer, AP indicted today on child abuse charges. They relate to disciplining his kid with a switch. On twitter, all the kids have just one question: what's a switch?

    Sigh...

ETA Vikes deactivate AP for Sunday. Looks like he did go a bit overboard...

ETA2 oh wow this sounds bad...

    Really sad situation.

  4. CNN says the FBI will be investigating

FORMER FBI member who know works for a law firm.

A law firm that has worked with the NFL many times in the past.

A.K.A. there's nothing "independent" about it.

And yes...I'm sure a scapegoat will be found. Then, there will be some chiding of Goodell about how he's clearly not running a tight enough ship, but, we all make mistakes, right? At least he "got it right" in the end.

Now, let's get back to making some $$$.

  5. Wave goodbye to Roger Goodell, folks. He is well and truly f**ked, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

AP has the smoking gun: a law enforcement official says the elevator tape was sent to the NFL in April, and they have a voicemail from the league office confirming receipt of the video.

    BOOM.

    He'll find a scapegoat.

So and so got the video, but buried it. The higher ups had no idea.

    So on and so forth.

  6. Going back and watching the game, I was struck by how many dropped passes there were by the Ravens. The first half may have looked quite a bit different had they not had bricks for hands.

I also really enjoyed watching Margus Hunt play. There was a kick return, in particular, where Hunt just grabbed Jacoby Jones, who was trying to run past him, and flung him down like a sack of flour.

  7. One thing I noticec is Hue has him getting the ball out very fast. It's great on one hand, but not sure if he is seeing the whole field, as he missed some wide open guys that he didn't see. I figure it's his first time running this new offense so let's see how it goes moving forward

Yeah, I was reading some comments from Ravens players today and they credited Hue's quick-throw plan with defeating their idea of coming hard after Andy. But you're right, in that case you're going to miss some opportunities.

I am perfectly happy with Dalton missing some open guys if he's going to throw for 300 yards, 1 TD (2 if Gresham finishes his route), and 0 INT on the road against a division foe.

    I'll take that any day.

They've just got to be better in the redzone, and they will be.

An effective running game wouldn't hurt, either.

  8. Yup, they should give the Falcons a heavy dose of Gio and Hill next Sunday. Atlanta couldn't stop the run last year and it doesn't look like that's changed this season. NO averaged just a skosh under 5 yards a carry yesterday, and they had one of the league's worst rushing attacks last year (after all, who needs to run the ball when your QB is Drew Brees?).

Ryan will definitely test the secondary. Hopefully we get Dennard back.

    Dennard back would be nice.

I'f feel more confident about our Os ability to keep up if Jones and Eifert were healthy. I think our offense has the potential to be fairly unstoppable when working at full force. Too many components to keep track of and if Andy really has taken a step forward...

  9. ironically, Still and Thompson were "luxury" picks, since the Bengals didn't particularly need either one of them-- they had Pat Sims and the intriguing Clinton McDonald, but felt the draft picks were too good to pass up.

That said, these picks turned out like picks normally do when you reach for need: not well.

I don't recall Still or Thompson being considered reaches when they were taken...

  10. Just a salary dump. Good move if it allows them to sign someone else. Either one of their own pitchers or a bat in LF.

Broxton is definitely on the decline. Started off the season well, but has been slipping as of late and his velocity hasn't been the same for years. Surprised they found someone to take on the salary.

  11. From the sentences I never thought I'd type department: bengals FO >>> KC FO. They just gave Alex Smith $45 million guaranteed over the next two years.

    http://profootballta...end-alex-smith/

$30 million guaranteed at signing, $15 million more kicks in in march.

    Nuts.

People have lost their minds. Unrelated to the Smith deal, but...

On Mike & Mike the other morning they had some guests on who were really bashing Dalton. Saying his success was due entirely to Jay Gruden. Guden is such a mastermind, he turned Andy Dalton into a top 5 fantasy QB. ANDY DALTON!?!? As if he was just a complete scrub from the trash heap that Gruden managed to polish up.

You know guys...maybe he's actually *shocked face*...a decent football player?

  12. I got an email today from yahoo analyzing "my" draft. It gave itself a B. laugh.gif

Haha yeah, the grades are funny.

I won the award for "best draft" and also got a B.

Every year they really grade me down because I only pick one defense and one kicker. Yahoo believes my lack of depth will most certainly come back to haunt me.

  13. So, the Bengals are now right up against the salary cap. When was the last time we saw that?

Bottom line, really nice work by Katie.

I would also suggest that it's justification for letting guys like Michael Johnson and Anthony Collins walk this offseason. You can't pay them all.

Of course, that strategy is only justified when you actually DO pay the people that matter most. So far, so good.

    Here is the next move:

Dumping Leon, BJGE. That's almost $13M cap savings right there.

Now, would you rather have had one of MJ or AC instead? I would.

Dumping Leon? Um, no thank you.

  15. Yes, I do hate to derail things. But, I did want to stop temporarily to mourn the loss of the typical Bengals fan's most-used offseason complaint.

Year after year it feels like people have been upset that the team wasn't spending all their money. All that wasted cap space... and the Bengals response is always that they're saving space to re-sign their core players.

The typical fan's response? "I'll believe it when I see it!"

The day has come. See it and believe it. bengal.gif
