Goodell lifts the suspensions of five players
By Adam Schefter | NFL Network
September 17, 2007
After a busy week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell had a busy Monday.
Goodell lifted the suspensions of five players: Kansas City defensive end Jared Allen, Carolina guard Jeremy Bridges, Tennesse linebacker Robert Reynolds, former San Francisco wide receiver Antonio Bryant and former Cincinnati linebacker A.J. Nicholson.
The Chiefs and Panthers were granted roster exemptions for their players. Reynolds reverted to the injured-reserve list.
Both Bryant and Nicholson are free agents.

Allen's suspension for substance abuse violation reduced to two games
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com
Updated: July 15, 2007
Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen, sanctioned in April for a repeat violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy, has had his four-game suspension reduced to two games as a result of an appeal.
The rare reduction, first reported by the Kansas City Star, was confirmed late Sunday by a league source. The NFL had never publicly announced the suspension, but Allen had admitted to it.
Allen will miss the first two contests of the season, on Sept. 9 at Houston and Sept. 16 at Chicago, instead of the campaign's entire first month. He will be eligible to return to the team on Sept. 17, provided he meets all the conditions of the suspension.
"I'm excited about this," Allen told the newspaper. "It changes training camp for me. It will change the way I approach the season."
Allen, 25, was suspended by commissioner Roger Goodell after twice being charged with DUI last year. He has demonstrated much remorse over the incidents and has become very involved in several local charities, most notably working with a group that raises funds to combat juvenile diabetes.
The former Idaho State star pleaded no contest to the most recent charges in September and entered a diversion program to resolve the first DUI incident from May 2006.
On May 22, as first reported by ESPN.com, he signed a one-year qualifying offer for a restricted free agent, worth $2.35 million. Barring an extension, he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.
A fourth-round choice in the 2004 draft, Allen has developed into one of the league's top young sack threats. He has 165 tackles, 27½ sacks, 10 forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, one interception and 15 passes defensed in 47 appearances and 41 starts. Allen has an explosive first step and combines with that a relentless drive to get to the quarterback.
Allen indicated in February, with discussions on a long-term contract stalled, that he wanted to be traded. It is believed the Chiefs made him a multi-year offer but with significantly less in guarantees than other defensive ends, some of them with statistics inferior to his, have received lately. Allen said in February that he was "shocked and hurt" by the lack of progress toward a long-term deal.
In anticipation that this might be his final season in Kansas City, he recently sold his home there. He will live with a friend during the season but has continued to make strong contributions to the community this offseason.

Upshaw has been a weak union head long before Goodell showed up, compare him with the union heads for MLB and the NBA and you see how pitful he is at his job. He acts like he works for the NFL instead of for the players, maybe they have some incriminating evidence against him or something but he's is highly ineffective.
Is it coincidence that Cox and Thurman file a claim with the EEOC around the same time, ...or is it Gene?
-
I can see where Gene would not want to rock too many boats - his income of 7+ million dollars a year as the head of the NFLPA puts him in some platinum handcuffs
Sweet gig if you can get it!
-
Well being that the NFLPA is being run by Uncle Gene Upshaw who never has a cross word the massas err..owners and NFL I would say that the Union is extremely weak.
I can't blame Gene for his predicament. His own players have grown to like Goodell. Gene has lost the PR battle and can't take Goodell on face-to-face, ...but he can still back stab him!
-
Its not a matter of if but when Thurman comes back. He's remained sober this whole time. He's been tested 10 times per month on his suspension. He will win the EEOC claim and it would be better for the league if he is brought back now rather than after they are forced to reinstate him on an EEOC ruling.
That's a lot of conjecture posted as fact. You been talkin' to Ms Cleo? Spain? Agreen? JoePong?
Fact of the matter is, the CBA is written in such a fashion that God-dell (yeah, I dislike the guy) does not have to ever reinstate him, and does not to my knowlege even have to give a reason, at least publicly. When Odell signed his contract, he (as any NFL player) signed in part a statement that says (paraphrased) "if I reach a certain point in the nfl drug program and am suspended, the commissioner is within his rights to never reinstate me if he so chooses."
I'm not a lawyer, but Odell is not being barred from earning a living......he can go and apply for any job he likes.....but he violated the terms of his union contract and is not welcome in the NFL. If I did what Odell did and my employer fired me, do you think they'd let me come back after a year? 2 years? 3? No.....in the real world, you get fired for violation of the terms of your employment contract/agreement, you're likely not ever going to get to go back. The fact that the NFL has a structured procedure wherein you MIGHT return under the right circumstances places it as MORE forgiving than the average employer.
Now if you want to bring in someone who can make a positive impact on this team - special teams has been a disaster this year thus far - yep, you got it......look ever so slightly to your left. He's available :-)
If your circumstances are exactly like Thurman's ...
Yes, the ADA states that your employer has to reinstate you if you have remained sober (a qualified disabled person) during a company sponsored suspension unless you work in the transportation or the nuclear industries. The agreement the NFL has means squat to the US government if it is found to be illegal. The US government usually stays out of bargained union agreements because they are implied to be fair since both parties are considered equal until proven not but they will get involved if the union is considered weak. That is the whole reason why the union gave no formal response back to Thurman when he asked for help. They open the door for the government by doing that. Thurman turned to the EEOC and the rest is left to be written.
If you compare the ADA and the CBA, the NFL has problems. It would be to their benefit to bring back Thurman and hope he drops the claim. Thurman actually has a better case than Cox, IMO.
So, ...its not a matter of if but when he will return, IMO.
-
I'd take UC's head coach to replace Marvin. Mans got a great defense in Clifton.
NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leave Kelly alone!!! We need him!!!
-
No more calls for Thurman, he is the past. The fact that the front four having a combined 6 tackles at the half had to show how pi$$ pour the DL can be.
Its not a matter of if but when Thurman comes back. He's remained sober this whole time. He's been tested 10 times per month on his suspension. He will win the EEOC claim and it would be better for the league if he is brought back now rather than after they are forced to reinstate him on an EEOC ruling. So, Mr. Brown will be doing the league a favor by lobbying right now for his return. The league can't afford to lose that claim and we need him.
-
Like getting punched in the testes.
Ahmad Brooks can tell you all about that.

I am not going to say I didn't enjoy watching the Browns win.
I am only going to point out to you unhappy Bengal fans the same thing I have been saying since week one to my fellow Browns fans.
IT'S ONLY ONE GAME !!
Our team is not as bad as we appeared in week one.......... no matter what some idiot Stooler fan might say !!
YOUR team........or more accurately your defense, is not as bad at it appeared in week two !!
OUR defense isn't as bad as they looked either !!
However, the Browns offense IS as good as they appeared in week two, they just are not likely to play that well EVERY week !!
This game was just like the 04 game that was 58 to 48 your way, in that the offenses were on fire, the defenses were invisible, but the play that sealed the deal was made by the defense.............only this time it was the Browns defense !!
So........ in games where the points are being racked up like a pinball machine...........WE'RE EVEN !!
The reality of the situation for you guys is that you are..........as we are............ 1 - 1 !!
Yeah, you lost by six to the Browns........... so what ??
The Browns are not the patsies they once were.............and they are FAR from the worst team in the league........
..........no matter what some idiot puts in an asinine power ranking !!!!
The problem with that loss is that now we are counting on you to prove you are a good team so you guys better win more or this loss hurts REAL BAD!
-
Ahmad Brooks was out of the game early on (maybe the 1st series, groin injury). We just fell to pieces. Its unreal how this D fell apart with Caleb Miller and then Marshall taking over at MLB. It appears to me we have no backup for Brooks. Certainly not a disruptor like Brooks. We need Thurman back and even if he was to come back tomorrow then he'd still need to get back to game speed but we're better with him then without him. Even if he's not ready to backup yet, he's better than what we have now.
Hey Mike Brown, ...start lobbying Goodell!
-
Jason Cole of the Miami Herald reports that LB Ahmad Brooks was dismissed from the Virginia football team after failing multiple drug tests. We don't want/need him...we already have our own chain gang we don't need anymore convicts on the staff...
Oh, come on guys, ...one more for the gang! There is plenty of chain left!
CINCINNATI, ...HERE WE COME!!!

Right at this very moment in his career Carson stands as the true superstar QB of the NFL. He is a perfectionist in his craft and will continue to perfect his game, never satisfied with where he is but what he can still become.
Witness his recovery from the injury. When was the last time anyone recalled seeing that much dedication to overcome and getting back on the field as quickly as is humanly possible? Its been a long time since this kind of dedication and leadership has been on display in the NFL and its great to see in comparison to just another party animal or thug player that are so prevalent today.
Carson is poised to break statistical records that have never been achieved before by an NFL QB, ...and he's your QB, ...on your team!
Enjoy, ...and remember this time is the beginning of the dynasty!

Is there anyone on this site that also posts on cincinnatibengals.com? I'm having problems logging in, it says "you are not permitted to use these boards." Does that meen that I'm banned or something? Oh well, I just found these boards and they seem just as cool if not better.
Same thing happened to me. I didn't say anything worth getting banned over.
-
I don't really know where these rumors come from... but I'm starting to wonder if there might be a little bit of truth to it.
Same here. I can't figure out how he could possibly get hit with a major year-long ban, but I will no longer be surprised if he suddenly pops up with a Clemons-like 4-game suspension...
The newest rumor is he's finishing his degree. If this is true then I hope everyone in the media will leave him alone and let him study in peace.
-
First off welcome aboard!
Indeed we do have game day threads.
Theres lots of folks here with tons of football knowledge, you've found a good home if you decide to stay.
Hell we even have our own chaplain, how many football boards can claim that lol (wheres Big-O)
Again welcome aboard guys - WHODEY
I hear everybody here has been banned before. That would mean the preacher too? Wow, ...this is a tough board! ...or is he just going where the sinners are?
-
Blah blah blah, same as every other excuse on here. Yes, every single Steeler fan jumped for joy when Palmer was hurt. That's the same as me saying "All Bengals fans are like Spain". Is that true? Of course not, but you guys just love to generalize. It's just an excuse to say the things you say.
Ben was stupid to ride around without a helmet, no doubt about it. But he's still a kid. At that age you're indestructible. When you're that age and a millionaire, you're untouchable, I imagine.
How would you feel if it was Tommy Maddox who was in the accident (honestly)?
-
Trust me, Jeb, you weren't banned for bashing the Steelers. There's a bunch of us who spend almost every day on the smack board trashing the Steelers and their fans. That's what that forum is for. Whatever you were banned for, it didn't have anything to do with the Steelers or their fans who post there.
Anyway, I'm going to try to stay out of this. I have great respect for the Mods at bengals.com, just as I respect the Bengalszone Mods. I respect and appreciate anyone who gives me a site to express my views about the Bengals. I've been a fan since '68 and rarely has the future looked brighter for the Bengals than it does these days. We should all be one big happy family right now.
Yeah but John, ...I'm part of that family and I'm standing in the cold for no reason.
-
As everyone else has said glad to have you...I don't understand how a person gets banned by his favorite teams message board, while the best is yet to come...been there through all the bad,now see ya...I don't like the Steelers as well as everyone else it was a dirty hit as we all know, whether BCowher had something to do with it or not, it looks like the favor was returned by a higher power...once again welcome...
Thanks, its a nice place!
I'd like to make a dare. I dare anyone who can still get access to the Bengals.com website to take a look at only 2 threads. 1st in the jungle noise and the thread is about Henry's latest arrest with the date in the header. The 2nd is a thread I started in the smack forum and is called, "Its official, the Steelers are going down in flames this season." Those are the only two places I've posted recently on that site.
Take a look at what I posted in both spots and then tell me that Magictouch isn't right when he claims it is now the Steelers board. he's right on the money. Any Bengal fan better walk on egg shells over there when it comes to the Steelers and a simple controversial subject (like the state of their team). If you are still on that board it is better to avoid the Steelers altogether rather than face possible banishment. Unless you just don't care.
-
Well cool...
Actually there has been much discussion on the other board I'm from about the state of affairs over at bengals.com. So I knew what to expect and originally was just trying to communicate with some posters that were on the bengals.com board. It must have been because I started the first question with something like, "it sickens me to be on this squeeler board" or whatever.
You can't be serious. I don't know why Jeb and oldskooler were banned, but it was obvious why you were. You never tried to communicate with anyone. You registered and immediately started trashing the Mods. You started one thread after another trashing the Mods. I didn't see one post of yours in which you talked about anything else. You apparently were begging to be banned. At least that's how it looked to me. I'm sure if you came here and started trashing the Bengalszone Mods in every post you'd get banned here too.
Hi John,
Do you have any idea why I was kicked off?
-
Oh Jesus help us !!! What the hell is up bringing in a guy we don't need with issues like this ?? Stupid and a non factor in my mind !!!
WHODEY !!!
AJ has one foot out the door and maybe just a bit more insurance just in case they decide to dump him?
-
Keep hatin' dude. We understand. It sucks to lose. I think we had a season or two since I was about 4 in 1973 where we lost 7 or 8...oh, that would be a playoff season in Cincy. Glad your team is keeping the police blotter writers busy all over the country with petty, stupid crimes! I'll have to have a Steeler fan membership drive so we can take over this board like all the good sports bars all over the country.
You already own the Bengals.com, ...getting greedy, ...are we?
-
They are updating servers. They'll be back up soon. But I spend 99% of my time over here. But BJ and Go and the gang are some funny MFers though.
...I'll check it out. I've been hanging at only the Bengals.com site all this time. They probably did me a favor and let me see more of the Bengal world by pushing me out of the nest. Remind me to thank them later.
-
That is the only reason I went to bengals.com and then here in the first place...go-bengals is in the middle of changing servers and it looks like the downtime is going to be alot longer than he had anticipated...I have no idea when that forum will be back up
Hey, at least it will be a better system when they get it up and running and this is a nice place.
No backup for Ahmad Brooks?
in Cincinnati Bengals

I love the new Miller Light Commissioner ads.
Will we see Goodell flanked by two "sponsored by Miller Light" banners in his next press conference?
Will his suspensions be sponsored by Miller Light or Budweiser?
