Lived in Eugene, OR until a few months ago...Haloti Ngata is a monster, draws constant double-teams, and needs to be a bengal even if a trade-up is necessary (which it likely will be, especially after the combine, etc.)
-
Ok, forgive me if this has been covered on another thread, but I wanted to ask if anyone has info regarding whether Roberts, Myles, or both have actually spent their practice time at safety? I'm hoping for myles, and people seem to have some pretty detailed info on practice happenings so who's lining up back there during drills?

Spain, could you at least try to type correctly?
He might very well be trying. Of course, I don't presume to know the situation so please disregard any assumptions I am making by saying this, but...I am a native English speaker and recently studied abroad in Chile -- being forced to rely on my less than perfect Spanish skills. I did OK, but certainly made many mistakes, and if everyone I talked to or wrote to would have been an a**hole I probably would have gone crazy. Of course people were for the most part very tolerant and encouraging, which is the way it really should be...even on the darn internet!

Ok, I checked out the old thread and so I'll start with my argument for Ickey Woods.
IF, we say, and that's up to you all I guess, but IF we are building a team that hypothetically is playing a "greatest of all time game" with all of our favorite guys on the field IN THEIR PRIMES then you have to say that based on what he could do when he was healthy and what he did for us (super bowl?) when he was healthy the choice has to be Ickey Woods. If we factor in longevity, career numbers, and all of that then he's got no chance. But if we are looking to put together the best possible team of guys to ever play for the Bengals, based on their best years for the Bengals, then I would want Ickey up front any day. Plus, fullback is an odd position and it really depends on the scheme, the player, etc. as to how he will be used and thus what kinds of numbers he will put up. Lorenzo neal has almost nothing in the way of numbers, but could be considered a great fullback because blocking was the name of the game and he was one of the best. There are many other examples. If we look at Ickey in his prime, he was an excellent blocker for Brooks and provided such a dynamic threat to run and score that I think he absolutely has to be the fullback on my all time bengals team.
Sorry...I really wish Ickey could have stayed healthy...he would have been an all-time great.

.funny thing is, my life's work is to try to influence kids your age to love God...of course I do that with a sense of humor (I hope)
Really? How so? Or are you just kidding? Sorry just curious...

I most definitely liked the old ones better - new era or not they were the best damn uniforms ever. Just black, with the orange shoulder thing, good old-school number font and not this new loopy crap, etc. Went better with the helmets too. I'd be really mad if they ever pulled a rams and changed the colors (yellow to gold). Those old blue and yellow rams uni's were awesome. After all, this is a GAME - things don't have to look so retro and serious. We're here to have fun!
-
I dunno about Warrick as a real tight end, but with him in the slot he sort of plays the same way (over the middle, etc.) anyway. And he's quite a blocker for a WR - so in a way we have a pseudo-tight end who lines up way further off tackle than most already. I think for standard purposes the guys we have are OK -- Stewart and Kelly can block and if it's obvious anyway we're going to pass it would be awesome to have CJ, TJ, Warrick, and Shoebel on the field at the same time. Hard to cover them all.

What else CAN I say...The bengals, baby!!
Honestly, I think this is it. This is the year. Carson will be solid if not great, Rudi and Perry will provide a solid tandem in the backfield, and we will have the most explosive receivers in the league. Our line, also, should be in fine form. With the exception of TE (and with warrick in the slot it really isn't that important) we will have the best offense overall in the NFL.
On defense it is more shaky, but I really beleive that Marvin is up to something this year and will get us over the hump. With Smith, Thornton, Robinson, and Geathers I feel better about the D line than I have in a while and with Simmons, Odell/Landon/Webster, and Pollack/Landon at LB I think we are pretty strong there. Our CB's are solid (Ratliff and Oneil are gonna do great things), Madieu will be a pro-bowler, and Herring will with any luck return to the man he was with the Ravens under ML.
So, of course it's the bengals. It has to be, right?
-
Is it just me but on the new bengals pics in the enquirer and the new training session clips and bengals.com, Warrisk looks like he's put on at least 10 lbs of muscle. He almost looks Hines Wardish...look out.
Yeah, warrick looks cut and way bigger. I'm hoping for big things.
-
Ummm...shouldn't it matter that the Colts' guys have Peyton freaking Manning throwing to them. Carson's on the rise and all, but he's not Peyton. And if we're talking about production, what we KNOW, then surely their stats are padded somewhat by having the best quarterback we've seen in a while delivering the ball.
Plus, I agree, overall the bengals are much better off:
CJ, Warrick, Housh, Washington, Henry -- and even Walter can step up in a pinch. That's depth.
Plus, the bengals have the best individual receiver among the group. Harrison has got to be easing toward the downswing of his career, while Chad will only get better.
-
I say Chad has a monster year with enough help to quell the constant double teams.
After that, Willie, maybe Carson, and on D I'd say Madieu, O'neill, and possibly JSmith or Bsimmons.
Simmons deserves one after all these years, but fans never vote right so i guess I doubt it.
-
Yup, I gotta go with TJ on this one. I am often at work or school musing over some Bengals debate and just like w/ the mostly-nude ladies others had posted before I always have to scroll really fast through those pics or else have my boss, a professor, etc. glance over and wonder what the hell I'm doing. Granted, I really don't care otherwise but I'd rather not worry about it at all.
Oh, and I'm not sure the reactions to the avatar have anything to do with you -- it's most likely the specific pose...just a guess
I'm always surprised at how creative people get with the internet. I'm at the early end of this so-called technology/web generation and I've no clue how to do much of anything on here except write.

DT Kris Jenkins, Panthers OR DT Marcus Stroud, Jaguars (i'm undecided)
S Roy Williams, Cowboys

Ok, i hate to get back into this rudi/perry/etc debate, but...got to. First of all, I'm not "bashing" rudi. I like the guy. He's a DECENT, productive back who will hit the hole hard and do well if his line opens the holes.
The reason myself and others don't feel as excited about him as some of you does not come from his production or numbers. Obviously he's "broken the single season rushing record." Yes, we know that. He racked up a nice season's worth of yardage. Problem is how he did it -- and the fact that if he could have bounced a few outside when the hole closed on 3rd and 1, or improvised and managed to get in the endzone on a few plays where he couldn't just run downhill, we might have been 10-6. It's not all about production, it's about variety, keeping the defense guessing, clutch performance, and the ability to take a game over if you're getting paid like he is. He simply doesn't scare anybody, and it's not hard to game plan for him because he hits the hole straight on and if its not there he hits it anyway. Credit our offensive line for much of his yardage totals last year.
Anyhow, with any luck we will get to see Perry do what he can do. I would love to see the dump off pass be an actual option, would love to see a broken play turn into a 12 yarder, and would love to see those 3rd and 1, 4th and inches plays not stuffed nearly every time. Rudi's a good back, he's just not what we might call a "playmaker." he's blue collar back who does what he's told/supposed to do and nothing more. He can't make anything happen on his own and he is not versatile enough to keep a defense guessing which is rather important nowadays. A straight downhill runner, if given the opportunity to carry the ball as many times as he did, is likely to rack up many yards a la last season. But if that's all he can do, 8-8 or worse appears likely with our defense (not saying that rudi was the reason we went 8-8 last year, but he COULD have won a few more for us if he wasn't so damn predictable and far from clutch).

All this seems kinda silly - who cares how many late rounders do good, how many fail, who picks the best, etc? It's more often than not a crapshoot anyway, and that has to do with coaching, opportunities (i.e. the colts could draft an awesome 7th round wideout right now but when will we see if he pans out?), and the often completely chance-based injury factor. I kinda have to agree with DPM on the fact that who cares about all the later rounders that coaches/gms missed in past years? Most weren't high on fansite or draft analyst mocks either...you never really know. And as for many of Marvin's draft picks, it is WAY, WAY, WAY to early to make any concrete evaluation. Andrews, Geathers, Madeiu, LJohnson, Askew, KWash, Ratliff, etc. could all end up being perennial pro-bowlers (and Madieu has already shown this promise early)...its a bit of a crapshoot, augmented by what happens in their lives during these next few years, how their bodies hold, and how they fit into the team and respond to coaching (though yes, you can KIND OF measure a few of these things pre-draft). Shoot, Perry might become LT this year. Lets just kick back, wait, and see...
I, too, would have loved to see antajj and shazor in stripes -- still would (party because I think antajj fell due to the drug thing and as far as i'm concerned that is rediculous and shameful. I would have picked him out of indignation alone that his personal life should make that big a difference in his future employment. I hope he becomes a pro-bowler for the raiders, even though i hate the raiders). Oh well, let's just hope the guys we did get late in the draft make us forget all about butler, brimmer, shazor, browner, etc. in a few years.
-
Hmmm... I couldn't figure out how to get the quote since it's too far back in the thread, but hey GROIIIDayton -- just so you know it was pretty clear that Shula meant Herring and KK are better than anyone NOT named Madeiu. I think he just left a word out. No need to be an arsehole!
-
Besides I'd rather take a thug who beats the crap outta people then a stoner.Hawthrown is not a ML guy anymore, he isn't classy enough. I say we pick the guy who has never done anything wrong.
ummm....does it really matter? AT ALL? when are we as a society gonna get over this hyped-up remnant of right-wing anti-drug propaganda (aka: blatant lying) and leave people alone about how they choose to relax and spend their free time. Do they test for alcohol at the combine? I'd venture a guess that alcohol may have a great deal more to do with various problems, including "beating the crap outta people" -- though I realize that you say you'd rather have this trait...an odd preference, but whatever. He will be in cincinnati you know -- so watch out
oh, and also, sorry to keep after you so much, BUT HOW IS PHYSICALLY ASSAULTING FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS "CLASSIER" THAN PUFFIN ON A FREAKIN JOINT? ????????????????
But of course, MANY people happily have a few beers at night and cause no problems - rightfully taking no flak for having indulged in this "substance" used for "getting a buzz." Let Antajj have his fun and freedom. What a weird country

If we did that deal with Philly this is what i think our draft would look like (first day):
1. Heath Miller
2a. Chris Spencer
2b. Anttaj Hawthorne
3. Ernest Shazor
.....ahhh so many possibilies......
I'd love to do that deal with Philly...That would give us a shot at all my favorite four: justin tuck, channing crowder/odell thurman, chris spencer, ernest shazor
-
Thank you walshfan for agreeing with me about Crowder! Your Probably the only one. I guess we are the only ones who see his potential in being a stud in this league.
He's not the only one - I haven't posted in a while but Crowder is a monster and I'd be happy with him no matter where we take him. Injury problems are a bit scary, but IF he is healthy he will be ray lewis good.

Just noticed this section - still getting a feel for the site. I suppose I will introduce myself here. I'm from Seattle, now live in Oregon, and have actually never been to Cincinnati. That said, I've been a die-hard Bengals fan since I was 5 years old. I thought the uniforms were cool, and inexplicably have been hooked ever since. Plus, since I got on board just in time to weather the worst decade in sports history, I've endured so much abuse and stuck through it that there's no quitting now! SB here we come!
My avatar is a pic of me at 6 or 7 yrs old dressed as Ickey Woods for Halloween - took an old bike helmet, painted it orange, and made stripes out of electric tape. Mom made the shirt and pants and I proceeded to do the ickey shuffle on many a front porch.
Anyhow, this is a wonderful site considering people post frequently and I can actually get some non-Hobson bengals news and info -- and updated more often than hobson's site, too!. Thanks to all of you regulars for making it that way.

Your probably right JoiseyCat, I really didn't do much in the way of cap calculations so a lot of this probably isn't feasable. then again, cap or no cap, it probably isn't feasable anyway considering it actually involves doing something during the offseason
is denver shopping pryce? haven't heard that - if so I'd be quite happy to see us trade for him.
Anthony Becht is peice he is slow and a waste of moneyI've been pushing Becht myself..I honestly don't know all that much about Becht, he just seems like the best value out there and I hear he can block quite well - and he's got to be a better receiver than Kelly so it has to be an upgrade over our current "tell the other team exactly what we're gonna do based on which TE is in there, unless of course it's Tony Stewart which means we can't do anything all that well" TE corps. I'd be interested to hear more about him since both of you seem to feel strongly one way or the other.
P Dub can be added to your cut list, and maybe Washington tooHmm..I'd keep him. If he's healthy and returns to 2003 form he's a really valuable weapon, and exactly what we need given our third down and red zone woes. A bit of a cap hit, but unless we actually plan to make some of the trades + other moves here I really think he'll be worth keeping. It's a contract year, so his play during the next 16 games will basically decide his financial future in the NFL...and that's the best kind of motivation there is these days. I'm from Seattle and watching Ray Allen play right now has me believing that more than ever.
Finally, on these quotes you'll notice I can't seem to get it to say who it's quoted from. How does one go about doing this? Thanks!

For those of us w/ too much time on our hands:
Ok, the offseason's killing me cause it's just too darn slow - nothing to do but speculate. So...here's the ultimate in speculation, a complete prescribed offseason w/next year's starting lineups. some things have already been done of course, and I don't have everything in my head so I'm probably leaving things out + screwing a few things up. I don't have an Xbox/playstation so I guess its my low-tech version of madden's franchise mode. Anyhow, please suggest any changes/additions/corrections or post your own!
CUTS:
rogers beckett
reggie kelly
kevin hardy
kim herring
kevin kaesviharn
Larry Moore (he's still a bengal, isn't he? Didn't see much of him at all)
maybe duane clemons if geathers looks good and we draft a DE in rnd 1 or 2 and maybe again in 6-7 or undrafted.
FREE AGENCY:
re-sign houshmandzadah
re-sign Braham (1yr)
re-sign most quality special teamers/cheap backups: wilkins, myles, chamberlain, mitchell, etc.
don't resign tony williams, carl powell, kyle richardson
sign ONE of the following: Ellis Johnson, Ed Jasper, Bryan Robinson
Sign Anthony Thomas
Sign Darren Sharper if not too expensive (after dumping herring, kaesviharn, and beckett we should have some $)
Sign Anthony Becht (if we don't, draft Alex Smith - see below)
TRADES:
rudi to ____ for 2nd pick
3rd rnd pick OR 4th and 6th round picks for Jaime Sharper
trade up in 2nd if we need to to get Ernest Shazor - perhaps our 2nd w/our 4th or a pick or two next year to get into end of first/beginning of 2nd.
DRAFT:
#17: Marcus Spears (if there...probably not) or Channing Crowder (most likely)
2nd, A (our original pick, traded up if need be): Ernest Shazor
2nd, B (pick for Rudi): Alex Smith, or a DE like Matt Roth if a solid one falls and/or if we sign Becht
3rd (if we still have it, if not get a C in 4th): Center: Spencer or Wilkerson
***Lineup on opening day, best case scenario:
Offense:
QB carson palmer
RB combo: #1 chris perry, #2 anthony thomas, kenny watson here and there
FB: jeremy johnson
WR: chad johnson, TJ houshmandzadeh, peter warrick (lots of 3wr sets - let pdub and tj battle for who gets the most reps), kelly washington, kevin walters, cliff russell
Line: Levi, Steinbach, Braham, Williams, Willie (young guys getting a few reps: Rookie Spencer at C and G, a developing Stacy Andrews at RT)
TE: Alex Smith
***Defense
DT Rotation: john thornton, matthias askew, bryan robinson, langston moore
LDE: Geathers, Matt Roth
RDE: Justin Smith
LOLB: Jaime Sharper
ROLB: Brian Simmons
MLB: Channing Crowder
Webster and Landon Johnson back up all spots and get a LOT of playing time in what I think ought to be a LOT of 3-4 sets.
CB: Tory James and Deltha O'Neil, w/ Ratliff as nickel corner and primary backup getting reps.
SS: Ernest Shazor
FS: Madieu Williams
Special teams - best in NFL: myles, wilkins, chamberlain, mitchell, abdullah, etc. Warrick back on PR hopefully + graham.
My little fantasy - we'd be awesome if all this panned out.
-
I agree, Ratliff is going to be a top-flight CB, and unless no significant upgrade at LB or DL is there I think we can count on some combo of James, O'Neil, Ratliff, and Bauman. We always have Madeiu (and he still may play some nickel, too) in an emergency and some special teamers like myles and terrell roberts. I'd love to see Derrick Johnson, Marcus Spears, or Merriman in stripes.
Kaesviharn is darn good!!!

I don't post much, but every offseason at least 1/2 this board wants to get rid of KK. Might be a bit different this year, huh? (pending Dexter Jackson's health). If KK can stay as "a 25 snap passing down/fill-in safet and big situation special teams ace" -- he's the best in the league at his particular, unique position! Agreed?
