TJ Signed

Ferguson to Dallas for a reunion with Parcells has been an open secret since the end of the season. And Pat Williams has connections to Minny via Ted Cottrell. The Jets went after both, and the only thing that did was cause Dallas and Minny to bump up their offers. Short of pulling a "Raiders" and offering to overpay by $1-2 million/year, I doubt either could have been snagged. And neither one was worth that; they're certainly the cream of this year's FA DT crop, but Ferguson has been inconsistent his entire career, and turns 31 this year. Williams is 32 and played less than 60% of defensive snaps for Buffalo last year. Hard to justify $5-6 million for a rotation guy.

All that aside, however, signing TJ would not have prevented us from spending that $5-6 million/year on, say, Williams. The Bengals started FA with about $14 million in space. 6 on Rudi + 2-3 now on TJ + 2.5 on RFA tenders = 11-12 million. They don't need money to sign Braham or the rookie pool or any of the rest of that until later, and they have yet to restructure one contract or cut one cap casualty. Had they wanted to, they could have dropped a bomb on Ferguson or Williams. Why didn't they? Maybe Marvin didn't think they were worth it. Maybe Mikey is just cheap. We'll find out if it was the right move in a few months, tho... <_<
