bengalsLB Posted August 1, 2005 Report Share Posted August 1, 2005 CHIEFS AGREE TO TERMS WITH FIRST-ROUND PICK LB DERRICK JOHNSONJul 31, 2005, 6:45:54 PMKansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Sunday that the club has agreed to terms of a five-year contract with first-round draft pick (15th overall) LB Derrick Johnson. The Chiefs have now reached contract agreements with all nine of their 2005 draft selections. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available.Johnson (6-3, 242) was a two-time All-America selection at Texas, where he appeared in 50 games (40 starts) over his four-year career. He racked up 458 tackles (281 solo), a school-record 65.0 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks and 10 INTs for 199 yards and touchdown. “We are happy to announce that we have reached an agreement in principle with Derrick Johnson, our number one pick,” Peterson said. “This would not have been done without Denny Thum, our Assistant General Manager. I just got off the phone with Derrick and he is very pleased, excited and anxious to get to camp. We will fly him in the first thing in the morning. We have agreed in principal on a five-year contract, no voidables. We are pleased to get this done.” The 2004 Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year also compiled five fumble recoveries, 11 forced fumbles, 39 QB pressures and 30 passes defensed.As a senior in 2004, Johnson won both the Bronko Nagurski Trophy as the top collegiate defensive player and the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker. He opened all 12 games that season and finished the year with a career-high 130 tackles (73 solo) with 19.0 stops for loss (-52.0 yards) and 2.0 sacks (-15.0 yards) to go along with an NCAA single-season record nine forced fumbles. Johnson also recorded an INT, eight passes defensed and 10 QB pressures.The Waco, Texas native was a Parade All-America selection and earned first-team All-Texas Class 5A honors his junior and senior seasons at Waco High School. Johnson posted 170 tackles (103 solo), 21.0 stops for loss, 6.0 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions, including one for a TD as a senior.
