Kirkendall
Anyone surprised by the relatively quiet trading on the Reds front, other than Randa? MLB overall on the trade front was more quiet than normal.
AMC
I think the Manny Ramirez talk clogged everything up and really stalled the trade talks this year.I am surprised the Reds were not more active. Maybe thats a good sign that they are confident in resigning Dunn before arbitration????
CBin2k7
As the days wore on I am not surprised the Reds didn't make a move. Any semblance of starting pitching and the Reds could be competitive. As you see when the starters give you 6/7 quality the Reds win a large percent of the games.Only person still on the team that shouldn't is Aurilia. And don't be surprised if something happens after the trade deadline. Last year the Reds traded Cory Lidle after the Non-Waiver trade deadline. If they can find a taker for Casey, he may be gone, no one will take on his contract.
Whur CHad At?
Yea I dont get baseball. They say they have a trade deadline but yet there are a ton of trades after the deadline. They should just drop the deadline all together. As for not making any trades now, dont be suprised if we make some with'n the next couple of days. Mr. O'Brien is waiting for the right offer. bengalboomer7
Here's a little blip from ESPN on how the Reds handled the trade deadlineTwo sellers who did it wrongDevil Rays and RedsYou know the names by heart at this point: Danys Baez. Aubrey Huff. Julio Lugo. Adam Dunn. Austin Kearns. Junior Griffey. Sean Casey. They're all names that have kept Rumor Central percolating for weeks now. So how come, after all that blabbing, not oneof them got traded? Let's just say a bunch of teams were fuming at the two general managers -- Tampa Bay's always-embattled Chuck LaMar and Cincinnati's Dan O'Brien. The complaints about LaMar -- a Deadline Day tradition -- were a little different than usual, though. This time, LaMar really had teams convinced he was going to move Baez and Huff for sure, and probably Lugo, too. But after seeing mega-prospects like Hanley Ramirez, Lastings Milledge, Yasmiero Petit, Jon Lester and Shoppach dangled before his eyes in the Manny-palooza talks, LaMar was unwilling to lower his sights even a little bit when it came time to trade his guys separately. Then, on Sunday, he started telling teams Lugo wasn't even available "after telling everyone he'd move him," said one front-office man. "I'm always amazed," added one frustrated GM, "by a team that needs that much help, as bad as it is, and doesn't do anything." But at least LaMar set the ground rules early on. If he didn't get your team's best prospect, he wasn't trading with you. He said that from the start -- and stuck to it. The Reds, on the other hand, sent mixed signals in all directions -- and aggravated more teams than anyone else in baseball. "I don't understand what they were doing," said an executive of one contender. "I thought we made real solid offers for a couple of their guys, and we'd never get a response. They'd never give you names of guys they want. They wouldn't tell you what they were trying to do. You were never sure who they wanted. You could never tell whether guys you were talking about were available. And they might not even call back." At least the Reds did make one decent trade (Joe Randa for promising pitching prospects Justin Germano and Travis Chick). How the Devil Rays could stand pat, on the other hand, is a bigger mystery to many teams than the Dead Sea Scrolls
Kirkendall
Writers are just mad at the Reds because we didn't do anything. They have nothing to write about...
CBin2k7
Frustrated GM's are going to be mad because they didn't get the players they wanted. They probably wanted to steal Dunn or Kearns away from the Reds, and O'Brien didn't let that happen. This is one time that I do applaud O'Brien. semiotter
That was a big suprise to me. I thought Adam Dunn was a goner.
AMC
That was a big suprise to me. I thought Adam Dunn was a goner. Just need to sign him to a long-term contract now....I just hope they don't plan to put him at first, and work Casey out of the spot

I love Casey but he is aging and has an 8.8 million dollar number next year.

I love Casey but he is aging and has an 8.8 million dollar number next year.OK, we got to talk.First, Casey being traded will not happen. There's been a rumor here and there, but no team wants that contract. Can't blame them. And when Casey is on, he's by far our best hitter -- drives the ball all over the field. Man, he's having a piss-poor season though. As you said though, he makes 8.8 mil.. who wants that? Second, I'm not so sure about having Dunn at first. I understand the offensive point of view. But defense is still a big part, and this year, Casey is the best fielding first baseman. He's gone some 70+ games without committing an error. Dunn hasn't quite wowed anyone with his glove.Something else of note. Since the Reds have had Kearns in the lineup everyday over Pena, we're winning. Something about having a solid right fielder over cant-catch-a-fly-ball-because-I-only-swing-jobo-bat Pena.In summery, having Casey ensures zero defensive problems, a clutch RISP hitter -- except this year of course -- and the core of the clubhouse. I say we put Casey on the Kearns diet and try to get him in shape again... that may help.
CBin2k7
I have to admit Kirk, you do brink up some good points. Team Chemistry is very important in baseball. Sean Casey is the glue for the team and it's overwhelming how much affection each player on the team has towards Casey, if they trade him it might do more harm than good. The Reds don't need more power as they are up with the leaders in homeruns, they need clutch hitters sprinkled throughout the lineup and no one can question Casey's ability to hit .300 every year. The more and more I think about it, the more it seems like Wily Mo may be the odd man out, if Kearns comes back healthy, Pena may be traded in the outfield. Chris Denorfia is showing really well in Triple A and may play a huge backup role, and then Freel can always back up an outfield position and let Olmedo or Bergolla play second. Kirkendall
Yea. I think that Wily Mo really only offers a powerful bat -- that's not necessarily bad, but it would be nice to have other skills, like catching, smart base running, throwing, hitting curveballs, fielding...I'd say they hire Wily Mo as the new Soronto in the next "Major Leagues" movie.
