Demoted NFL QBs getting fresh starts

By Skip Wood, USA TODAY

DAVIE, Fla. — Kurt Warner is doing it. So is Trent Dilfer. Gus Frerotte wants to do it, as well, and he's going to be quite unhappy if he's not accepted into one of this season's trendy little NFL fraternities.

Some ex-starting quarterbacks thought to be more or less finished, or at least firmly entrenched as backups, are enjoying a resurgence. After a couple of years playing behind Daunte Culpepper with the Minnesota Vikings, Frerotte is in competition with holdover A.J. Feeley for the Miami Dolphins' starting job.

Being the No. 2 guy again isn't why the 12th-year player agreed to join coach Nick Saban in south Florida.

"I'd be very disappointed, yes," Frerotte said Tuesday at the team's training camp hotel. "But you know, at the same time, I would know that my opportunity could come at anytime, so I would stay ready."

One thing that certainly helps Frerotte's cause is the presence of new offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who spent the last couple of seasons working with Frerotte with the Vikings. Frerotte pointed out that, save for a few wrinkles, the system basically is unchanged and his comfort level is high.

So are others. Among them:

• After winning a couple of MVP awards while leading the St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, Warner lost his job to Marc Bulger, briefly resurfaced last season with the New York Giants before giving way to top pick Eli Manning and now is the hand-picked choice of Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green.

•Trent Dilfer also helped the Baltimore Ravens win a Super Bowl in 2000. But he wound up backing up Matt Hasselbeck with the Seattle Seahawks before new Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage decided he could be a perfect fit.

Feeley started eight games last year, and now that Jay Fiedler is gone, the fifth-year pro isn't about to hand the job to Frerotte and wish him well. Saban hasn't named his starter and apparently has no immediate plans to do so.

"You can't worry about that," Feeley said. "Things will fall where they may."

Dude, AMC, do you remember when Frerotte slammed his head on like a wall because he was so pumped and got injured? I think that was what happened at least.

yep. hes a solid player just like dilfer but i feel leading a team that needs something more than just consistency i would go with frerotte. he has a better arm otherwise.

The Bengals were playing on Sunday night against the Falcons the third game of the year. They had switched QBs and started Frerotte. He was about to be tackled for a sack and switched the ball to his left hand and tried to pass it to someone. I think it was intercepted but I don't remember what happened after that. I am not sure if it was returned for a TD or not. But it was a very embarrasing moment on national TV for this franchise.

Akili started the next week against TB and the rest if history............

Wow.. it could be worse.. one time we started a quarterback by the name of.. DOUG PEDERSON!

Wow, and then throw Spergeon Wynn in to boot....After seeing the Cleveland QBs the past few years Dilfer is an upgrade!!!!!!!!

And yes Who? Frerotte will always be defined by the headbutt and the left-handed pass...Feeley's gotta win that job...if not he should quit the league...

And that next game when Akili faced TB.....The TB defense was playing around with him like a cat with an injured mouse....

I think Pederson and Wynn were better than Akili though, honestly, that guy can't make it on an NFL Europe roster.

Akili was the epitome of a head case. And part of that was the Bengals fault.

But I would NEVER draft a Jeff Tedford-QB. Akili, Boller, Harrington, Feeley, Rodgers, etc....

Akili will go down as the last of the great 1st round mistakes by the Bengals. The Browns have lost out on recent #1 picks and it shows, just like the bengals used to do. If you mess up the #1 it really sets a team back....
